However, their server is old, the hard disks are making noises the admin (Mark Bradakis) doesn't like the sound of, and it is also "sponsored" by a university which isn't going to last much longer. (MUST READ) I just talked to my sister and the offer is still open but for various reasons it would be really good if we could get it by the end of next week. Short notice, I know. A "sponsored by xxxxxx" ad at the top of the page is all she wants in exchange. As far as a domain name, I think the cost is very reasonable, like $70/year or something. John, can you give us an idea what the minimum requirements would be for a machine to handle the lists in non digest mode and the WWW traffic? I guess a 100 Mbit/sec connection would also be good? FYI, the physical location of the machine would be in Dallas/Ft. Worth. If we decide to go this route I'll volunteer to purchase a machine (once I know what's needed) and get it delivered. I'll accept $10 donations up to the cost of the machine also :-). I'm also NOT a linux head so I'll need someone's help in the Austin area to get it set up and configured before delivery. Personally, I'd prefer this approach over one of the free public hosting sites because it gives us total flexibility in terms of CGI, ftp site, etc. - --steve Orin Eman wrote: > > > I sent a reply to diy_efi but it looks like most of the discussion is on > > the other lists. I | guess a 100 Mbit/sec connection would also be good? Hi Steve, The load is on the order of 40MBytes+ (on heavy days more like 120M) each day. I estimate (with diy_efi out of digest mode) from last month that there are roughly 580k mail messages each month. Operating these lists in _not_ a small task; a dual channel dedicated ISDN would be the minimum service if we didn't co-locate. Please make this point clear to your sister... our bandwidth usage is not insignificant. I can run the machine from here, BUT... most likely, someone will have to physically touch it once a year to do OS upgrades. I would recommend that I have the machine for a week or two to set it up before shipping to Dallas. john gwynne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 13:58:40 -0600 (CST) From: Eric Clark Subject: domain name I'll give a sub domain off of hoser.com for the diy_efi, efi332, and gmecm sites. efi.hoser.com or whatever the list wants. - -Eric ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 12:48:26 -0700 From: "Dave Mumert" Subject: Mailing List Hosting MailingLists.org offers non-profit mailing list hosting for $100 per year.
