Get a good fast ATAPI CD - I'd go for a CDRW and use it for archiving > as well. More durable than tape. You don't need fancy graphics or sound. I have never seen so much horse pucky. Strictly speaking as the Administrator of a Prism3000 based network backup enviorment to even propose the CDRW is as this guy puts it "more reliable" is so far from the truth its not even funny. The real world is more like this, the life of a write head inside a cdrw drive is somewhere around 2 years MAX under heavy usage aka archival work. The life expectancy of a DLT tape drive is around 5 years up to 10 if your archival is weekly not daily. As far as durability another load of BS. cdroms are suspectbale to all kinds of damage, dirt, heat, scratches etc etc. Tape is pretty much magnetic and physical damage. a lot more durable than cd's will EVER be.It shocks me how unaware some NT type really are about the REAL world. - -- Ned Williams UNIX Administrator Systems Integration Group IMS Health - Strategic Technologies ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 16:25:08 -0600 (CST) From: Eric Clark Subject: Re: DIY_EFI Digest V4 #645 On Mon, 15 Nov 1999, DIY_EFI Digest wrote: > Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 10:44:23 -0800 (PST) > From: Stuart Hastings > Subject: rec.efi.diy newsgroup? > > Nobody has yet suggested we turn the DIY-EFI list into a Usenet > Newsgroup. Signal to noise ratio is really low on almost every newsgroup. A private nntp server that is NOT part of usenet would not be a bad idea. Would probably save a lot of bandwidth. - -Eric ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 17:13:37 -0800 From: "Randall Young" Subject: RE: rec.efi.diy newsgroup? My main objection is that spammers 'harvest' email addresses from USENET, and use them to generate spam that does not appear in the newsgroup (new oxymoron : "private spam"). There are also issues with some ISPs not carrying all of the newsgroups, and with loosing messages if you don't check the NG very often (like during a vacation). Also note that, when accessing USENET for the first time, Netscape may 'freeze' while it downloads the latest list of newsgroups from your ISPs server. There is a FAQ on NG creation at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/creating-newsgroups/part1/ Randall ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 20:28:53 -0800 From: Ross Corrigan Subject: '98 L31 Vortec 350 distributorless custom setup?? I just bought a '98 350 as above w/ 16k km's on it. It's minus any EFI stuff and had a new edelbrock intake. I've sold teh intake and vortec heads to a friend so I can put my alum. rpm's or afr's on it (haven't decided which, will sell whichever I don't use) etc. It's going into my 280ZX which has a 327 right now, so the aluminum/lighter weight is important for my weight balance/steering effort etc. Back to my q. This engine has a plastic front cover and the seller told me what looks like a similar size for a 5/8 heater hose hookup on it's bottom pass. side is a crank angle sensor! So after I got it home my heads spinning on the chance I might be able to make a distributorless ignition system without breaking the bank assuming I understood right this crank is already setup for this?? I"m v. green on ignition's so any url's etc are v. welcome. I have a crane HI-6 new gathering dust and a used holley 4Di system. I planned to use the 4Di system for this motor and was going to ask if the crane HI6 unit can be hooked up w/ the 4Di? Now I need to know how/if what I need to go distributorless?? I have a set of MSD universal wires I was going to cut to replace my current worn out MSD's but now I'll hold off till I know which direction this ignition is going to take. PS the motor will likely be run on a performer 600cfm for the first while till I sort out some other issues on my EFI list like new fuel lines/laptop/time to sort out etc. So the any changes if I go distributorless w/o the 4Di are of interest as well (the 4Di can control the timing curve as I understand it). What about maintenance ? How do we recover from a disc crash? Please consider the offer from Sunsite!! It's free and suits our needs.
