I haven't heard why a private news server (not a public usenet group) wouldn't solve all issues (and add some conveniences) in a very quick and efficient manner. Sure seems a lot nicer a setup than messing with a public list service and then switching again to something else later (and the consequent hosing up of the archives in-between all the changes).
