Hi,
Joined this list in a state of bewilderment, is there actually someone else
out there with f/cs?!
I own three (and a 101). I've got a six pot fire tender, an ex prototype
diesel, and a V8 recovery. To me they're an obsession, to get bits I buy a
scrapper, then it's too good to cut up so you need bits for it. That's my
excuse anyway!!
I also have a few odds and ends that maybe of use. If anyone needs anything
ask, I'm more than happy to help.

Hi All,

Well this brand new list is up to 6 members.
Some familiar names from the 101 list.

I don't own a 109FC but would like to.

I am in yankland.

by yank-land i assume you mean the u.s? if so theres no problem owning a
2a/2b as long as it is 25 years old, i know of three that are on the road in
the u.s. i'm in virginia, theres one in maine belonging to the bill
valerandes and another in massachusetts belonging to jim pappas. i've seen
a lot more 101's than 2a/2b's.

Where's my copy??!!!
92a is my early (possibly oldest left) fire tender. I showed it at Billing,
but I haven't got the skill or money to finish it. Sadly no one seems to
want it, so following Philip Bashall's advice I'll probaly be breaking it
for spares. I want the wheels, pto, bulkhead and axles but everything else
is available. This is last resort and I'd much rather pass it on to someone
who can finish it off. If anyone is interested tell me quick!!!

Hello All,

Is it possible for a 109 forward control to carry an 88" wheelbase series land rover?

I could have swore I saw one at an ARC rally doing this. Isn't the load capacity of a 109fc 1 ton?

Doesn't an 88" weight at least 3000 pounds?

Hi,
I'm converting my 2a into a transporter. To do this it now has a 110
Salisbury rear axle (wider, stronger, will be disc braked), the front axle
may be changed for either another Salisbury or a Range Rover depending on
cost. The engine and gearbox are currently 3.5 V8 and 4spd Range Rover
'box, but this may be swapped for an auto. The standard second chassis has
been removed behind the cab. This has been replaced with a frame that is
slightly lower and a lot stronger. The cab is currently off at the moment
so my measurements aren't exact, but I don't think an 88" will fit without
putting a beaver tail and/or third axle. I'm planning on using it for an
80" and a Mini I've got.
From memory there was a red one at the national (called Herbie I think) but
I'm pretty sure this was only used for 80".
No idea on weights, does that really matter?!

Hello all, including lurkers. Thanks to John for recommending the mailing
list to me. If nobody objects I'd like to mention this list in the
newsletters and on the web site listed below.

As you may have gathered, I am the registrar for the Forward Control
Register and also the person responsible for the FCR web site which is still
in its infancy, as is my knowledge of HTML. If you know of a vehicle that
you don't think is on the register then I'd be grateful for any details I
can get. There is a Windows Write document available from the FCR web site
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~grobe/FCR.htm which gives a list of the
kind of details that are needed. Of the owner's details only their name,
approximate location and a contact number are listed on the register but
that is at their discretion.

I checked through the register for any vehicles mentioned in the digest
archives and found all three of Jeremy's on the list. I was at Billing '98
so will probably have Jeremy's fire tender on video as I did a walk-about
with the camera on our stand. If it's the one (not the roped-off tender)
that was on the Register's stand it looks far too good to break for bits
unless the body is about to fall apart and the chassis is looking like a
cheese grater. I only have a few hundred vehicles on the register and not
all of them are 109s so it would be a great loss to see it broken. What is
it like? How much do you want for it? Do you want to advertise it (for free)
on the FCR homepage? Have you spoken to Bewick about it?

Anyway, the other vehicle mentioned was KCY 914E which has emigrated to
America and is now in the hands of Robert McCullough although it is still on
the register in the name of the previous owner. (Robert - Do you want me to
update the register to show the details you gave in the earlier mailing?)

Welcome!

The list is at 13 members right now. Yes, it is still small, but the quality of membership is very HIGH!

I wish I could contribute more, but I don't have a 109FC yet. (I am on the west coast of the usa)
I will advertise this list once a month on the main LRO list, the alt.fan.landrover, au.cars, uk.rec.cars and rec.cars newsgroups.

| 22|17|1999-02-05 15:27:19|JJackson|Re: From the Registrar|
Hi,
To cut a long story short, as far as I know I've got the oldest surviving
from a small batch of military fire tenders. Mine seems to have been used
by the MVEE until the mid seventies when it was decommissioned. After a
while it ended up working as a paint sprayer. To do this all the fire
fighting equipment was removed/ butchered. A small engine was fitted in one
locker and a sprayer on the back. By the mid 90s this had been stripped off
and the vehicle dumped in a hedge. When I found it it was mostly covered in
a rubbery green paint, didn't start, but was completely rust free.

Since then it's had two resprays (if I keep it I'll do it again, I'm still
not happy). We've resurrected the engine (loads of time and money spent on
that), slowly sorted various small problems (broken hinges on side doors
(not an L/R part)) and refitted the pump that's miraculously stayed with
it.

Sadly I've lost interest. I've got an ex factory odd ball of some kind (PXC
422E) that needs a lot of time and money spending on it. My 100 needs a
new box and I've bought a very original 88 (just perfect for export) that
needs a small amount of welding. All this means that I'm going to let the
fire engine go. I have no idea what it's worth, but to be honest I'd be
more interested in a swop for something. I spoke to Bewick a while ago
about an advert in the newsletter, but the last one I had was back in June.
I'm almost 100% sure my membership hasn't run out... (that is
embarrassing!!)

If you could advertise it on the FCR homepage (looks good BTW) I'd
appreciate it. I can post you some photos if you want.

Thanks

Jeremy

Hi,
I was lucky enough to find a door in a loft of local specialist. Sadly the
frames mint but someone has shot (that's what it looks like!) the skin. As
far as I know no one makes a replacement, but more out of curiosity I tried
cutting up a normal L/R door. If you do it neatly I think it would work ok.

If not I'll swop your rear canvas for my doors :)

Hi,

I'm about to get the above vehicle back to road use. However, I'd like to
know more about it's history first. When I got it it had a 3.8 BMC diesel
fitted and right hand drive. However, the chassis number shows it should be
2.25 petrol LHD. Looking at the registration its ex factory. It has a S2
bulkhead (ie winding vent controls), unique front panel, large square
radiator, env rear axle, Rover front, 2a gear change, negative earth and
custom panels under the door. It also had a unique rear body. Scratching
some off the paint off shows it was originally grey, then a goldy yellow,
with sign writing on the door (only noticed this one night when the
security light turned off. It was too faint to read). Since then I've had
an original rear body fitted (off a rally team, can't remember which, I'll
check later) and got the thing running. My aim is to return it to working
use (it already outperforms our 101 on the farm) but try and get it back to
a reasonable representation of it as it was in the late 60s.

Does any one remember it, or have any photos? (The 2b brochure shows a
similar registration)
I'd like to use it for local shows as a working 60s truck. Any ideas on
finish or equipment?

Thanks

Jeremy

(I can send photos of it to any one that wants them)

yes, i'm here, i just got my 2b home for the first time since tuesday. a
cable television company here is filming the great train robbery to be shown
this fall in the u.s. and a couple weeks ago had left a note on my 88. they
wanted to use it and decided to use the 2b as the bedford truck that was
actualy used along with a 109 belonging to another member of our land-rover
club, ROAV.

I've got a "Land Rover Series IIA & IIB Parts Catalogue Part No. 608218"

I think the LRO bookshop still sell them. Definitely worth getting.
Are you still after a 2b?

Hi all,

I finally got round to reviving the fire engine yesterday. It was last
run in September and has only been periodically started, moved round
cleaned and parked up since. Despite this it started very easily. My
plan is to try and get it through an MoT. I have had NO interest in the
vehicle and I really don't want to mess around with magazine ads so I'll
properly end up breaking it.
Any objections tell me now.

Next I turned my attention to PXC. As ever the battery was flat, but
once charged it fired straight up. Sadly my front swivel is so shot I
daren't drive it far. This is next weeks job followed by a complete
brake overhaul. I've been slowly stripping the paint off the rear body.
It appears to have been part of the Rootes Race and Rally Team. I'm
completely photographing it, but intend to respray it all one colour. If
anyone wants to swap these sides for another set (they're mint) I will.
Does anyone know any more about the vehicles Rootes used?

My rebuild is still progressing very slowly. I got bored so I pulled the
cab, V8 and box out. I've done some more chassis welding and painting
and thats about it.

Finally I am convinced I've worked out a way to fit disc brakes to a
series axle. I'm currently gathering the bits to fit to my ambulance.

Thats me done for now,

Jeremy

The most recent 109 Register newsletter had a very enjoyable tale of one true Land Rover owner's trials and tribulations to obtain a new set of springs for his FC 109.

Spousal pressure, the dread mother in law visit, oblivious parts clerks. All these roll off of Duckman's back and in Act IIB (B stands for brilliant!) things come to a head and he realizes that he will have to just do it himself.

Sigh, I love happy endings

Did they really exist???? The is an issue of LRW that shows what appears
t be a series III f.C. fire engine but does not comment.

I can not find any documentation.

So did Rover build any series III forward controls? If not IIB what
would thay be called???

Yes, there were some series III forward controls. It's late so I'm just

I'll have to speak to those in the know to make sure.

There is a SIII based forward control made by Carmichael on the FC

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~grobe/FCR.htm

This vehicle was first used on the Forth Road Bridge as a personnel

A similar vehicle was the base for one model of the Carmichael Redwing

different chassis though)

I'm the owner of the above web site and I'd love to know which bits work
properly or not. It certainly works with Internet Explorer 5.
The image sources are referenced by only giving an address relative to the
current page rather than an absolute address so that the whole site can
easily be transferred from my hard disk to the homepage. Perhaps some older
browsers or non-Microsoft browsers don't support this.

Here is the complete location of the Carmichael picture

See if that helps.

Yes, but many of the addresses contains backlashes (\) instead if
slashes (/) in the paths.

All images on www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~grobe/FCR.htm has this problem.
The fire tender picture on the 'for sale' page also has this problem.
But the 'pictures' page works OK (bacuse it uses proper pathnames).

My name's Steve and I'm a Roverholic. I'm getting a '68 110 FC here (US) at
the end of the month that has no rear body and nothing above the door tops.
Are there any opinions/experiences as to what the best course of action
would be to make this a relatively comfortable traveling machine - not a
camper? I'm thinking of a 109 rear body with a couple nice comfortable
seats in the rear and lots of soundproofing. This should still leave a
small flatbed for external stuff like luggage, camping gear, generator and
or a/c unit. For the near future it'll have the PU top from my 88" on it
with the homemade wooden flatbed it recieved from it's last owner in
Austria.

Hi there.

My name is Lui and I got a FC-2A from -63 Im about to rebuild. I have owned
it since september -00 and it needs a lot of work after it has been left out
in the open fields for God knows how long.

It has served its duty as Firebrigade Vehicle somewhere here in Denmark, but
the info is sparse on that subject Im afraid. It got no back and no roof.
Original wheels and central PTO still intact, and it is fitted with 2,25 l.
petrolengine.

Steve's mail kind of insprired me to write to this list causs Im facing the
same problems. Im having serious doubts about the design of the back, and I
have also thought about getting sidepanels from a 109", but that I can
understand causs trouble.

On the site; http//4wd.sofcom.com/LandRover/Series/FC.html is a pic of a
camper converted FC , pretty neat actually... Those sidepanels is what Im
looking for, and they look very LR-like. Is there someone on the list who
got any info on this.

Ill be back soon causs I got a lot of questions !!!

Hi,
Glad to see the list in use again!
Recently I was contacted by a person whos f/c I'd shown an interest in a few
years ago. He told me it had been off the road for the last year and that
he'd got another for spares. As this was 10 minutes down the road I thought
perfect, I'd go and have a look.
First impressions were good, a fairly tatty but complete looking 2a/b.
Lacking a registartion plate to date it I'm not certain which it was but
suspect a 2a. It had a strong 4203 (Perkins diesel), modifyed gear linkage,
complete bodywork, lots of dents and lots of rust. Seemed to start and drive
ok.
So with a rotten bulkhead, no chassis plate and a top speed of 35mph I was
rekoning on around £500. Er, not quite! Apparently bidding was already at
£1200 with more people due to look at it!! The spares truck was rotten, may
have supplied a pair of ENV axles if you were lucky. My valuation £100.
Sadly I left saying if someone came up with the money to give me a call just
in case.
Got the call two days later, got a final offer ofg around £1300 and £250 for
the parts truck. No way can I justify that so I've let them go.

So, has the value of forward controls suddenly shot up? Where there really
other people interested? (No one I know would want them, let alone pay for
them!)
I'd be interested in any comments!

All:

I brought an ex-Austrian fire truck version of the IIB over this spring and
now have a bit of time to mess with it. It has the Euro-6 w/SU carb and
8300 km on the clock since new. It starts great and Idles pretty good but
it doesn't take power very well. I took it to work a few days ago and it
would make about 42 mph w/some choke. A day or so later I was on some sand
dunes behind my house and it started balking under load consistently - it
would rev freeIy (slowly) in neutral but did not like putting out power at
all. I got unstuck and limped it home. I opened up the carb finding the
jet diaphragm perferated. I got a rebuild kit and put all the new parts in
after a good cleaning. It idles much better and will rev better (still
slowly) w/o a load but will not get above 25ish mph in high range on level
ground (this vehicle has no rear body so is very light). When it got here
it ran but I noticed a bit of bubbling from between the rear of the head and
the block. The head bolts were slightly loosened and the head retourqued -
I have a new gasket ($48.00!!!) on standby but the bubbling ceased after the
retourquing. The elevation here is 400'msl and there is a good fuel pump
supplying fresh unleaded gas. Does anyone have a guess as to what
specifically to check on this beast?

I have a IIB with the Euro 6 and an HD6 carb. It starts okay and idles good
but will not put out any power to speak of unless it is hot and has about
half choke. When it got here I nothiced a bubbling from the #6 cyl between
the head and block so slacked the head fixings and retourqued IAW the book.
No more bubbling but still not much power. I got a carb kit and reassembled
it IAW the book after a good cleaning. The engine has 8300km on the clock
since new in 1968 and is currently operating at 4000' msl. I have a spare
head gasket and might pull the head this weekend to look into the engine and
confirm there is no inter-cyl leakage, maybe even have the head skimmed

hey steve, an overdrive will fit but good luck fabricating the shift
likeage. you have a 2.25 petrol don't you? mine has a 2.6(westlake head)
with the "A" which will do 65 easy. if your looking for more speed, the
easiest thing to do is just swap a "C" box, the standard setup in a series
88,109, which have the higher ratios. make sure of which transfer box you
have. f/c's all came with the "easy change" transfer box which allows you to
go from high to low range while your moving, as opposed to stopping and
shifting. in case no one has told you or you haven't been up to 60 or more
in your f/c, they get very scary if you don't have any weight in the back.
sort of like driving a tractor-trailer with an empty trailer, ain't a whole
lot of fun, especially when theres rain or a lot of traffic around you. i've
never driven mine flat out but i know jim pappas has, he has a 2.25 diesel,
and his will only go 45-50.

Bob:

I have the lower ratio box and will probably be putting in the one that came
out of my 88". That should give me all the gearing I can support up here in
the desert. My IIB has a 2.6. Are you saying that yours will do 65 with
the lower range t-case? What rpm is it turning? I don't have a tach on it
and figure 40-45 is about 3000rpm and don't want to keep it much above that
for long. Is that too conservative for the 2.6? I have no experience with
these engines. What is a westlake head?

Thanks for the info - Steve

All:

I removed some leafs from the front of my (6 cyl) IIB this morning and
headed out to check the new ride. About a half mile from home on the
outbound journey the 'Beast' quit. It was just as if you turned of the
ignition switch. I checked that it was getting fuel. There was juice to
the coil and distrubutor checked of course by touching wires to grounds in
the true Rover fasion. The hi-tension coil wire was checked in the same way
and it was putting out many arcs. The plug wires were not. When to coil
wire was touched to a spark plug the engine would fire at strange intervals
comfirming there was enought arc to fire the plug and a reasonably proper
fuel/air mix. Somehow, somewhere the pulse was being lost between the
distributor end of the coil wore and the spark plugs.

...what we found. The rotor had a small crack in it. I removed the spring
steel tensioner piece and put a couple wraps of ordnance (duct) tape around
it and still no go. We top it the half mile home backwards (another story).
Before I put the battery in my 88" which died today also I put in a 4 cyl
rotor - not quite as long but hey, it's and arc isn't it? The 'Beast' fired
right up. I guess the coil pulse was going from the rotor brass pad through
the crack in the plastic into the distributor shaft.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

I have just joined this group because my close circle of Landrover
mad friends have acquired a S11a 109 FC from Dunsfold.

The vehicle is in a none running condition and will need a full
rebuild before it can be used on the road. Its registration number
is ALF624B. I did not make a note of the chassis number, but some
poor condition paperwork found in the vehicle quotes 28600340B; it
could start with a 3 instead of a 2 though. When I get full details
I will send them to the register.

Does anyone know where I can start to peice together its history.
Dunsfold did not know any, although it was known by the BMIHT at
Gaydon I am awaiting a reply from them.

I do know that that it served with the Royal Signals and Radar
Establishment at Malvern between November 1979 and October 1984 from
various paperwork found in the cab. It is painted bronze green with
the top half of the vehicle in Yellow. The back body is a large box
fitted with 240v mains sockets. I believe the vehicle has always had
a civilian number plate, and that it was registered in 1964.

Can anyone help me with any further information?

Thanks in anticipation.

there
You can write a letter to Land Rover. The will send you a letter
back that states the date that it was built and the final destination.
(usually Ashchurch of Hilton) and a photocopy from the build ledger.
The information looks like this:

http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/Series/FAQ.S.chassis_numbering.956.html
http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/Series/FAQ.S.chassis_numbering.957.html
http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/Series/FAQ.S.chassis_numbering.959.html

Send your letter to either John Riley or Eric Pagen at:

Project Eng. Traceability
Land Rover
Lode Land
Solihull, West Midlands, B29-8NW, England.

You can also contact Wally Dugan at the Museum of Army Transport
in Beverly. You will need to have the military registration number,
a
chassis number will not work. If they have a record for your 101,
you will have to send them somthing like L15 and you will get back a
photocopy of the military record for the vehicle. Information found
will contain thing like entry and exit into service and which units
it was with. I don't have their contact address on hand. There was
an article in LRO/LRM/LRW that had it within the last 6 months.

If it is simple information you require if you call these folks up
and ask
they can give you the build date and delivery data OVER THE PHONE.
To get something in writing you have to submit the form and send them
10

There is also product tracability at Land Rover ( FORD ???? ) but
they only
have a COPY of the build books now at Gaydon.

A big thank you for the two replies. They have a wealth of information in
them.

It was interesting to note that the military did not use forward controls
until the 101 came out. The known history that I have pieced together so
far for this vehicle does suggest a use with the MOD. Paperwork found on
board includes mileage and fuel records from DSRE Malvern to sites such as
RAE(Royal Aircraft Establishment)Little Staughton. It also had reciepts and
authorisation slips for drawing fuel for use in the generators used by the
vehicle. The slips were signed Mr W. Stringfellow, BS2 Division, (R) 211
South Site.

The vehicle also contained unused accident reporting forms, and drivers
instructions.

The mileage records cover November 1979 to October 1984 at Malvern.

A Works ticket shows the vehicle was probably last used on the road in 1988.
At this stage the vehicle was reportedly gifted to the BMIHT from an RAF
Station. The vehicle passed to the Dunsfold Collection around four years
ago, but nothing was done to restore it.

Last weekend it passed to us so that we can tear our hair out trying to
rerturn it to its former glory. It appears to be in its original paint
scheme.

Once again many thanks for your help.

Merlin Jones.

All:

I've just got out from under my IIB. I'm putting a SIII transfer case into
it since the gearing is higher and it no longer normally carries a heavy
load. I've been told that this is a straight one-for-one swap. There are
of course a few modifications required for linkeage and such but it
physically went in okay. The problem comes when stuffing the guts back in.
The SII gearbox mainshaft had an extra long spacer aft of the oil slinger to
hold the mainshaft gear in place. On the one-tonne and IIB x-fer box the
intermediate gear has three gear wheels one for high, one for low and one to
engage the mainshaft gear - hence the extra spacer. It looks as though the
mainshaft itself is made differently also as the SIII mainshaft gear will
not go all the way home. It seems as though the shaft is a bit longer and
the spline is not cut close enough to the gearbox to accomodate this swap
without cutting some of the mainshaft gear inside spline.

Is anyone out there familiar with this? Is there a modified mainshaft gear
out there that will fit? Were the gearboxes fitted to the one tonnes and
IIB's different from the regular SII box? I have the radiator at the shop
and thought I'd have this done before it came back. Live and learn.

Thanks - Steve Rochna, Fallon, NV

Yes. The main difference is the mainshaft. To use the 'standard' xfer

Hi there...

I have a forward control from -63 that needs a diesel engine ( still
got the original 4 cylinder petrol engine).

I have been surfing the web for info regarding engine replacement in
Landrovers in general and it seems like there are a lot of
opportunities...

I have an old 2.25 landrover diesel at the garage but the lack of
power prevents me from installing it right away !

Is the 2.5 l. (without turbo) any better ?

How about fitting a 200 tdi (will the gearbox fit) ?

.... or should I look for a non-landrover engine instead ?

Advice will be appriciated

Hi guys,

I am the proud owner of a 109 2A FC, fitted with a 2.25 petrol engine. The
Serial number is 28800080B. From my archives, I have been able to establish
that it is about a 1962/63 model and is the 80th vehicle manufactured, "B"
Specification. It is fitted with an "E" transmission, which has the numerals
"63" stamped on the transfer casing.

I would like to know which year the vehicle was manufactured and what load
box was fitted as it is currently a Chassis/Cab.

Merlin,
Just occured 2 me that MOD is not the same as army. It could have been with
one of the many 'civilian' arms of the MOD staffed by civil servants. Your
discovered chit for 'Mr' would seem 2 indicate this as forces don't use
this title. It would not be unknown for bit of kit to be stored at a base
until it fell off the end of an inventory, particularly if the owning org.
has been merged/disbanded/privatised.(lots of that going on in the last 15
years)and its an older piece of kit.
| 90|78|2001-09-27 23:53:05|Merlin Jones|Re: Thanks for help with history.|
Kev & Peter,

I have now had a chance to get a look at the fittings etc inside the shell
of the rear body. I have taken pictures, but am currently unable to forward
them due to lack of scannner. I will try to verbally describe what I have
found.

There is an engine governor fitted to the top front left of the engine which
is controlled from the back body only. The corresponding parts from the
back body are completely stripped and missing. On the rear of the engine is
a power take off which has a large 12-13" twin pulley attached. This
provides drive to a 24v military generater, such as fitted to most 24v
military landrovers. The wiring for the generator is completely missing,
but I believe that it passed upwards into the rear body because of a an
appropriately sized and placed hole in the floor.

This type of generator needs two 12 volt batteries to provide the field
circuit. Without batteries, the diodes in the regulater burn out. The
logical place for these is in the box on the side of the chassis behind the
drivers side wheel, but I can find little evidence because the leads are all
missing. (They wouldn't be attached to the vehicle because the main system
is 12v possitiver earth.)

While looking at all the stuff in the back, another piece of paper was found
under the flooring stating 'Vehicle tests: MBT; FV432 and Fox' It then
lists the test dates; all in 1986! The mind boggles, because this seems a
strange use for a radar research vehicle to me.

To finish off with, I have found an entry on the web from a 1995 BMIHT
catalogue of vehicles. This shows catalogue number 90-2-6 - ALF 648B as
being a S11a 109 FC RAF radar control vehicle from 1964.

Once again a big thankyou

Merlin.

Just got fc dormobile and having a small problem with clutch.
Needs lots of pressure to disengage and is slow (1-3 seconds)to re-
engage, especially in 1&2 gear. Have been told this is because Jaguar
plate is fitted but ? ? as also losing fluid from combined
brake/clutch reservoir. with no obvious leaks from brakes (which work
fine) thoughts turn to clutch cylinder seals about to give up. Any
experience on what to tackle first, master or slave or should I just
cut losses and replace both rather than trying to reseal anyway? Or
is it down to Jag clutch?
| 93|93|2001-10-10 05:19:30|Monika & Steve Rochna|clutch stuff|
I have similar symptoms on my 1968 IIB. I attribute it to unknown fluid
quality. The stuff in there is red and I suspect it's an old veggie based
hyd fluid that is getting thick. The truck is useable but double clutching
brings out the re-engagement delay. I plan a flush, seal replacement and
refill with dot 5 in the near future.

All:

Having just opened up the vaccuum assist servo on my IIB I see that to get
to the servo piston I need to make a tool and remove some factory crimps.
The brake system is filled with an ancient reddish fluid and I'm cleaning it
out for silicone fluid conversion. If I can't get into the servo piston,
the only option is to clean/rinse it as well as possible and reassemble as
is.I'm not even sure the seals I have are the ones for this unit and will
not know until I get them in-hand. I'm toying with the idea of simply
removing the servo and running the system just on muscle power alone. All I
need to do is block the vaccuum line and make a short female/female adapter
to hook the servo in and out together leaving all lines in-place for future
servo reinstallation. It is my understanding that there is no decrease in
braking available - the only difference is more pedal pressure needed to get
the same amount of braking action. Is this correct? I run the vehical well
below spec weight (it was a fire truck). Have any of you Forward Control,
109 w/servos or 1 Tonne owners done this?

Thanks for the help.

| 107|107|2002-01-24 15:00:24|aldus_manutius|Hello and Info/Guidance Request|
Just joined. By way of introduction, we own and use three vehicles: a 1996 BMW K1100RS
motorcycle (my daily commuter at 80 miles a day), a 2000 Jeep Wrangler (my backup and
present off-road vehicle), and a 2001 Disco Series II (my wife's daily commute and soon-to-be
joint off-road vehicle...yes, she knows how to lock her hubs! Started her out with a Nissan
Frontier P/U that DIDN'T have auto hubs...that's why we got the Disco!).

Our quandry is this: I want to replace the Jeep with something more "robust" that we can use as
a camper/photo-shooting vehicle. I have been considering the following vehicles:

1. LR FC. Pluses- all-time 4x4. Not TOO big if I have to use it to commute. Minuses - repairs
can get pricey...after all, it's a Rover, eh? Would need to find a hard body for the camper, ie, an
ambulance/radio truck configuration. HIgh probablity of 24 volt system.

2. Steyr Puch Pinzgauer. Pluses - About the same size as the LR FC, could be used to
commute as needed. Minuses - same situation with the bodies...the hard body models are
more expensive, when they can be found. Not as common (yet!) in the US. 4x4 is not full time.

3. Unimog 404. Pluses - Cheap by comparison. Fairly available with the radio cab which gives
a ready made camper.Outstanding off-road capability. Repairs are fairly straight-forward.
Minuses - Not a good commuter. It's BIG by comparison. Very noisy (average cab sound
levels in excess of 90 db!). Not full-time 4x4. Only 24 volt system. Did I mention it's BIG?

If anyone has some real, practical experience and suggestions, I would like to hear them. I am
feeling partial to the LR FC (partly 'cause we already have one Land Rover and partly 'cause I
like the thought of the full-time 4x4), but I'm concerned about issues of reliability repair costs and
working with a 24 volt system.

I think I can adjust to the idea of right-hand drive, since there is a fairly high probability of that
being available. Thanks!

standard Series II bits and they aren't full time 4wd. 101FC on the
other hand is nearer to a Range rover but on leaf springs. All series
are 12 v but one of mine is positive earth(just to keep me awake).
All of mine run 3.3 perkins diesel, but with all series your engine
is only limited to what u can fit in!(and no worry about bonnet
lines) can get a little warm sitting on top of the engine.
Reliability ? Just the usual problems with a 40 yr old vehicle. Mine

occasionally use them to commute but its only 3 miles and doesn't
recharge the battery enough, but its still good fun.
If ur not set on a FC have u thought about LR 127 ambulance?
Have fun and give me a shout if I can help.

Hello!

Is there a part catalogue available special for the
109 forward control or is it included in the part
lists for the "normal" S2A (like 605947 or RTC9840CC)?
I'm looking for it, because I have a problem to get
the right exhaust system for my FC. I've got a lot of
differnt part-nr., but no one seams to be the correct
one. It is a twin can exhaust system for a 2.6l 6-zyl.
I've found one that looks like mine at
http://www.dls-uk.co.uk/3exhaust%20list.htm
but it's for a 88" 2.25 PETROL III "OPTIONAL" (?).
Can anybody help me?

Andy

Thanks for your fast answer! Another question: If
you've found your part catalogue, can you also mail
the ISBN-number or the Land-Rover part-number of the
book. Then I'll try to get one for my own.

twin can 2.6l parts:
front pipe (to manifold)=543190
front silencer=543193
rear silencer=543192(rhd) or 543598 (lhd)
there are many other bits and pieces listed but they are standard LR exhaust
hangars, bolts, etc. The pipe between the front and read silencers has no
part number listed and from the diagram looks to be part of the rear
silencer. The same goes for the rear pipe.

they found it too underpowered, and so LandRover never sold enough

Don't blame your landrover; It has led to you having the responsibility of
preserving a nice , and rare, piece of history. I gather that it didn't
entirely put the MOD off, because 'ALF' served with the RAF for a time.
Dodn't the MOD try 6 109 FC's?

Can somebody please give me some info about the standard drop side
loadbed of the IIb ? I am about to rebuild one, but the entire rear
body is missing, including the rear part of the upper chassis frame. I
assume this means that the vehicle once had a box/special body. I am
looking for info on dimensions of the loadbed and type and dimensions of
the steel channels used for the loadbed floor/subframe.

'ALF' has now been sold to a friend in Worthing, and it is he that has
finished the restoration of ALF and got it registered and MOT'd. I'm not
too sure about the color scheme that he has chosen though.

It was booked into the War & Peace show at Beltring for next week, but now
looks very unlikely to attend. Hopefully it will make it for atleast one
day though.

--- In 109fc@y..., "psmoif" Hello Peter
Thanks for your reply
The 3.8 BMC engine is originally from a BMC FG type tuck and has a
very large flywheel. The forward controlis at present fitted with a
standard Series 2A gear/transfer box with the vertical clutch slave
cylinder(not the series 3 type which is lying flat) Because of the
flywheel size I cannot use any other Landrover Clutch setup.I am
thinking therefore about fitting a truck gearbox(say from a BMC FG
lorry) and then using a remote Series type Landrover part time 4WD
transfer box.I cannot use the Range Rover LT95 gearbox because of the
clutch setup.

Hi;

I just found out that Santana in Spain have been building a 6 cylinder
diesel engine for there 109"s during the -80´s.

By looking at the specs it seems to be a good alternative to a FC 109 !

Power : 70 hp
Torque : 207 nm at 1800 rpm.

No one in Denmark seems to know about this engine, so I would like to
know if any in the FC - group know if this engine ever made it outside
Spain.

If I ever get my hands on one, will it fit on the Ser. IIA gearbox, or
will I need the Santana gearbox as well ?

Hi all

I've just joined this list (I've been on the 101 list for a
while, but hey, I didn't *know* of this list 'till this
morning) and I'm reading the archives so that I don't make
a fool of myself by asking TeriAnn who made her the list
mom (*wave* Hi TeriAnn :-)

Jeremy, two questions. Firstly, you must be the guy who put
that pic on the files section of the 101 list, with the 101
and the 109. I want to use it in my FAQ (BTW, are there any
other 109FC FAQs out there? I don't think so...) Permission
please? http://www.retro.co.za/landy/FC/109FCFAQ.html.

Secondly, way back in 1999, you said:
I want!

Not any more, I don't think.

I have the IIA Bonneted + FC Workshop Manual, which obviously
does not cover the IIB. I'm scanning the supplement, which I
will post unles physically restrained by someone's lawyer. If
the parts manual etc. is NLA, I would like to do the same to
it.

the parts manual is available, part #608218, which covers the 2a and 2b
forward controls. my forward control is KCY914C, 1967 2b, 6cyl, RHD. i live
in Virginia, USA. If you can not locate a manual, i will try to find a
source for you. i believe the lro book shop does have them.
| 157|33|2003-06-11 09:54:04|Ketil Oftedahl|Re: 109fc manuals/parts catalogs...|
Too late, TeriAnn! Wouter has already managed to wake me up ;-)
I even discovered that the 109fc mail filter did not survive the latest
updates here and the 109fc mails ended up in my regular Inbox, so this list
must have been quite for quite a while.

As for the question about manuals, I got a SIIa/SIIb parts catalog from
Mansfield Motors (I think) a while back.
I do not have any workshop manual covering the forward control models, but
would like a copy if somebody knows where I can find one. I am not
ancouraging anbody out there to break any laws and send me (potentially)
illegal copies of coyrighted manuals, but if somebody does I will be the
last person to report the "crime" ;-)

At the moment I have 2 Forward Controls, one (or maybe I should say about
0.8) Series IIb truck cab (with most of the rear body/loadbed missing) and
a "cherry picker" just purchased on ebay and hopefully about to start its
journey across the North Sea to its new home in Norway.

Kind regards,
Ketil

Mansfiel Motors in the UK. I seem to remember them having a couple left at
the time. The stated part number 608218 is correct.

Hiya all

Wouter also woke me up.
I have a 109fc that I'm looking to sell or swop for what have you. It was
converted into a camper van at some stage and has been standing for a little
while. I'm in Gauteng South Africa. (Seems like Wouter is somewhere here
too??). We've recently moved house and there's no place to keep her so we'll
have to part.

Anybody interested?

Hi all

I'm down in Cape Town but my FC is still up in JHB -- will have to go
up there with an A-frame and the 109 and drag the thing down.

OK, so I've checked the LRO bookstore, and I've emailed Mansfield with
no reply, and I've tried Craddocks, and I'm still looking for a parts
manual. Anyone?

Hi there,

I would like to obtain workshop manuals for the 109 FC.

I've searched the web and obtained certain updates / amandments but
not the manual itself.

I do not want to buy original books from the UK or wherever and was
hoping to find electronic versions.

If you can assist please mail me at jbvnkerk@...

Sorry, lost the drivers for my digital camera. When I find them I'll send some pics!

The FC is a 2.25l. I'm 85% through re-wiring the whole machine. Shouldn't be long before I'm finished. Body-work is good. Origional Engine etc. Only done 200 hours in it's lifetime (apparently) so engine is probably still great. Been standing for quite a while though. I'm looking for SAR 7500.00. Maybe somebody wants to come look sometime. I'm in Boksburg SA.

Wouter: why don't you come look when you fetch yours.

All the time :-)

Well, guess so...

Well, maybe, as soon as I actually get hold of my forward control.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

*grin*

OK, I've added the FC appendix from the workshop manual to
the FAQ, so you people can go download it if you need to
know how the gear linkages work.

Now, I need to parts manual. So I can scan it and put it up
too. Copyright? I'm sure we'll all buy a copy should someone
reprint it, so no-one's losing financially.

So, who is going to volunteer to source a Series II FC parts
manual for me? I'll pay, you just find the seller. I have
spend some (expensive international) time on the phone with
Craddocks but no joy.

Messages or the emails? If it is messages I never go to Yahoo groups.
If it is emails they come to me.

Are there rules about that? Since I never go to Yahoo groups I never
see the albums.

No. Not everyone in the group has a forward control. I consider
myself a 109 fc fan and thus an associate member. Of course I could
put pictures of my 109 Dormobile there. I had the audacity to do that
in the Carawagons group. But why post an album in the FC group if you
do not own a FC?

Too short to be boring. I read most anything that comes through this
group.

Is there a workshop manual for the FC or is there only the supplement in the early 2a BC manual?

A year ago mansfield was in its financial death plunge. These days the
new owners are more concerned that the company at least breaks even (No
more loosing a little on each sale but making it up in quantity) which
equates to higher margins and focusing on high sales volume parts.

I doubt if they have replaced any obscure or low sales volume part sold

Interior - basically factory standard - Gas stove, fridge, shower,

Outside - I'm in the process of "cleaning up" the outside (it has
been standing an awfull long time in the sun.
Underneath - Disc brakes all round
On top - Roof top tent and lots of boxes for packing
Engine - Straight 6 Chev (3.9l?)with adaptor plate for the LR gearbox.
Diffs - apparently modified to give a nice cruising speed of ±100

Hi Chaps,
Yep, things have been a bit quiet here lately, but that's probably
cos we all been buzy.

I've been busy collecting more FC's and have another couple of 2b's
to pickup as soon as I've finished concreting what was the garden
(neighbours arn't too pleased)so I have somewhere to store them.
Of the new ones, one is a scrapper as its been butchered but the
other is a fire truck (surprise) but bigger than any I've every seen
Doors hinge from the grill panel with full height /width double doors
at the back. Got the original brown log book as well!

Billing show was great with 10 fc's on the FCE stand and a couple
with S2 stand next door. Adie managed to get the 6 wheeler finished
in time and Kevins carmicheal turned camper looked great too. It was
brilliant to see so many together, and the Saturday night party went
on till 4 am.
Journey back ws not fun as A43 was closed cos of the Grand Prix and
during the 30 mile detour Rod's FC towing a caravan broke its
overdrive in the middle of a country lane junction blocking it
completely...

Sorry about any problems with the FCE site, but we are having
problems with the server and can't get in to change anything.

Have fun... in a FC of course :)
| 187|183|2003-08-01 14:39:09|Johan B|Re: Photos|
Hello Lui,

How does the shower work ?
Very similar to that inside a house, hot & cold water

Is there a drain in floor?
Yes - unfortunately it is on the same side as the side door i.e.
where people would sit.

And how do you keep water from getting all over the place ?
One can hang a plastic curtain. The curtain reaches all the way to
the floor. The "shower" is really just a very small square bath
(about 600x600 and about 500 deep)

Is it hot running water ? I noticed the gasheater above the
kitchensink.
Very hot water - almost hot enough for coffee. Downside is that the
gasheater is almost against the roof leaving black smoke stains that
must be washed off after every use. Easiest of all is just to hang it
through the side window.

I have seen quite a few "Overlander´s" on the web. I even saw one on
the FC enthusiast home page from a rally in the UK (on UK reg.
plates).
Do you still have the address?

Do you or somebody in this forum know who build them and how many
they buildt ? The only thing I know is that they are buildt in S.A.
You are quite right! They WERE built in SA, not anymore. What
happened was that this guy, Jan Vorster, bought a number of these
from the SA army and built them all the same way. Even down to the
exterior painting. I even have an electronic version of the
original "sales flyer"

Where can I see pics of your FC?

Photos and brochure can be emailed seperately from jbvnkerk@...

Hi Johan and other members of this list;

Thanks for the photos Johan ! They were very informative ! I´m really
impressed about the interiour details on your FC.

I´m sorry that I can´t provide some photos of my own FC. It's
standing in the back of my uncle's barn behind a big haystack from
this recent harvest. So I wan't be able to get out before early next
year.

Anyways; I went through my files, and came about some different
camper version I found on the web, be searching for Land Rover + FC +
Africa in Google, which I have postet in Photo Album under "Campers".
The ones stuck in sand + Fordie and Witlands is probably of the same
herritage as yours, be the rest is quit different I think.
Unfortunately the pictures is the only info I got, but I´ll try to
gather some more information about the respective vehicles. So if any
on this list have some more info or camper photos, I´ll be very
interested.

Camper3 is shot at The Billing Show in UK (2001 ?), and is quite
similar to the ZA-build ones, but the pop-up roof is a new feature.
Nice if you measure 1.88 cm. !

One last thing. Johan you asked for a link to the "Overland" I have
seen on the web in UK. It's quite easy, as it's on the FC enthusiast
homepage : http://www.difflock4x4.com/forwardcontrol/index.html.

Cheers; Lui
| 189|183|2003-08-08 13:05:17|Hilton J Ralphs|Re: Photos|
Hi Lui

There was a guy here in South Africa called Jan Vorster who under the guise
of Gulf Industries built about 80 of the 'Overlanders'. I'm not totally sure
about the actual number though.

They had the original 2.6P engine and as most know, it's pretty useless in
the heavy FC. A lot of buyers have upgraded to a Chev 4.1 or 4.9. Some have
even gone the route of Tdis but I'm not sure about the transmission changes.

Let me clarify my statement about the 2.6P. If you want to travel in
Southern Africa, there's a lot of distance to cover before you actually get
anywhere, so you ideally want to be able to cruise at least 80km/h fully
loaded. As there are generally no facilities in the more remote spots, you
have to take about 200l of fuel and a similar quantity of water. Plus most
of your food.

So basically the 2.6P just doesn't cut it. Fuel consumption is another big
factor apart from range and cruising speed.

Bear in mind that the FC that Johan has is the IIB which had the 110"
wheelbase, so I suppose it's technically 'off topic' for this forum.

All in all a pretty cool way to explore the wonders of Africa!

Cheers

Hello everyone,

Last month (July 2003) recorded the highest number of mails posted on
this site since Jan 1999!

Traffic seems so s l o w this month, I wonder if that is an
indication of the maximum speed that these FC's can go. It is already
the middle of August and only 3 messages? People are perhaps just
busy or having fun in the sun.

In South Africa it is still pretty much winter so people should have
time to do some surfing.

The albums don't seem to get much attention either? I've added a few
pics lately. I know of an FC in town that has recently been completed
but do not see one photo here. Mike, please share with us.

So anyway I'm in the process of stripping mine and should start

Hello,

I have now (finally) received my "new" S2b cherry picker.
When I arrived at the port to pick it up, the guys at the cargo terminal
told me that they had no Land Rover there - actually they no cars at all
except a Mini. Even after searching the warehouse and the shipping
documents they claimed that the vehicle was not there. When I finally
found it hidden behind a stack of 40' containers I was tempted to just pick
it up and let the shipping company continue to search for it...

I have not really had time to look at it in detail yet but I did see that
what the seller described as a V4 engine actually had 6 cylinders. The
cylinders were in-line and the engine sure looks like a good(?) old LR 2.6l
unit.
As my intention is to restore the vehicle this has probably saved me a
long, difficult, and maybe expensive hunt for a LR engine :-)

I will take some pictures and post on the web ASAP. (The pictures from the
eBay listing are already out there.)

Does anybody out there have any info on the Spencer (or other) cherry
picker conversions ? I would like to know as much as possible about the
vehicle to (try to) avoid mistakes during the restoration.

Cheers,
Ketil

Well here it is based on either the internet country extension or a

If you wish to contact your fellow citizens, feel free to post a

Hello.

Can anyone advise me please of the ease of fitting alternate engines,
particularly the Rover V8, to my 110 S2B forward control? Are there
any other engines that are a known easy fit? Will the diffs and axles
handle the extra power?

Is there a practical way to increase power from the six cylinder
Rover engine?

Has anyone tried fitting the constant 4WD transfer and gearbox from
the Stage 1 Land Rover or Range Rover?

Any advice to a new S2B owner gratefully received!

Thanks all,

Paul

Why not a six cyl turbo diesel since the engine compartment is already
set up for a six?

A V engine usually requires more side to side space than an inline six.

Hi

It depends :-)

Your axles should be ENV or Salisbury (As far as I know you won't
find Rover axles on a 110FC, only on the early 109FCs). All the
110FCs I've seen in South Africa uses the Salisbury axles. In any
case, I don't think your axles are the weakest point, your gearbox
is.

Your *gearbox* is either a SIIA unit or a SIII/1 tonne unit (if you
got the FC from the SA army :-) The SIIA gearbox is the strongest
series box, but that doesn't say much. In South Africa, the
Chev 4.1 6 cylinder engine is very popular, and it DOES break
the SIIA box if you're not careful. I would say that the gearbox
can *just* handle the 4.1 chev power output, *if* you're careful.
So that gives you a torque limit of about 317 Nm (the figure I
have for the Chev 4.1). The Rover V8 generates 224 Nm, so it
should be OK, BUT when Rover brought out the Stage 1 they
upgraded the gearbox to the Range Rover unit -- i.e. the Rover
engineers did not feel that the (SIII) box could handle the V8.

I think you will get away with it, if you're a careful driver
and you stick to the stock 3.5 V8 and not one of the later
more powerful units...

Nope. It's a beautiful engine, but it's an ancient design.

The people who know tell me that you can't use a permament 4WD
gearbox if you have universal joints in your front axles -- you
need a front axle with CV joints. I contemplated this and realised
that it becomes an issue of jacking up the FC body and replacing
everything underneath with Range Rover parts... rather buy a 101FC.

An alternative, I've heard, is to replace the gearbox only, keeping
the SII transfer case etc. I'm waiting for more info, will post
it to my pages when I get it.

Look at TeriAnn's pages (wave hi :-) at www.cruzers.com/~twakeman.
I assume you have looked at my pages? *grin*

BTW on the SIIA FC the linkages run close to the engine so
everything I've said above may or may not apply :-)

Hello again,
Nice to see you here, too :-)

The easiest fit will be a 3.0l Rover 6 cyl from a Rover car (Rover
100 or 110).
If you change the bellhousing to a 4-cyl type you may fit a 4 cyl
engine from a LR - 2.5l petrol or diesel or a Tdi diesel.
There are also convertion kits / adapters available to fit either the
Rover V8 or different kinds of diesel engines (Perkins etc.) - these
are all for the 4-cyl bellhousing, I think.
As you have got a S2B your vehicle has the ENV axles so you don't
have to worry about the axles or diffs unless you install a really
big engine :-) The gearbox, however, may not be able to cope with
the extra power or a larger engine.

I have not seen any FC with the LT95 gearbox (Stage1/RR) but I have
seen one with a 300Tdi engine and a R380 constant 4WD box...

Ketil

Hi Paul;

I assume you're from Australia, so my advise is to
look for a Perentie, Land Rover made for the
Australian Army. It uses the Isuzu 3.9L 4-cyl diesel,
which will give you plenty of power and a pretty low
fuel consumption, compared to the old 6 straight or
the V8 petrol engines.

To get started please look at :
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~lloyd/4/LandRover/Perentie/

There are plenty of series 2 and 3 with this kind of
engine transplant in europe, but an adapterplate is
needed if the enigne come straight from an Izusu van
or pick-up. The ones from the Perentie fit on the
LT95, so there must some way to make it fit earlier
non permanent 4WD gearboxes (fx. LT85 Santana gearbox
?).

Anyways, I´m planning on the 200 Tdi which bolt
straight on the series gearbox and torque is about the
same as the 6 cyl. petrol, so diffs and axles shold be
OK. But I have no idea if the 200 Tdi ever made Down
Under.

I would also like to know if anyone has tried fitting
the constant 4WD transfer and gearbox LT95 in a FC
2A/2B. Rumour has it that the axles won't handle the
ekstra stress, but as long as you don't use a to
powerfull engine what's the problem then ?

Best regards, Lui

Hi Wouter,

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I have obtained a Ford 4.1 engine
attached to a blown Series 3 gearbox (ran out of oil!). I presume the
bell-housing adaptor will enable me to fit this engine to my Series 2B
gearbox, and hopefully with care I won't blow my gearbox. I have an
overdrive unit to fit to my gearbox - do you think it would handle the
power of the Ford engine?

I would prefer to fit the RR V8 engine, but at a quick look it seems too
wide. I will get out with the tape measure and check it out. If it fits,
that would be ideal, I could retain my transfer box and fit the RR gearbox.

Very interesting point about the requirement for CV joints c/w uni joints
for the constant 4WD. It would be tempting to fit a RR axle just to get the
disc brakes, but I think they have a narrower track than the 2B.

Thanks again for the excellent info, and yes, I have read every word on
your web site - even the bit on micros. I work with 87C51 series micros
every day.

Thanks for the suggestion, TeriAnn, but while I love diesels, I am
suspicious of turbos.

I would also like to keep the original engine if it is possible to up the
performance. 88 hp doesn't seem a lot for 160 cubic inches - must be some
scope for improvement.

The Isuzu engine is widely available in Australia, but I have a bit of

That is very common for people who are either alive during WWII or born
to vets soon after the war. My father was a US marine who was wounded

Was the Cummins 6AT diesel available in Australia? It is close in size
to the Holden/Chevy six engine.

| 214|201|2003-12-29 22:33:07|yahoo@dW.co.za|Re: S2B alternate engine?|
Hi Paul & all

Erm, maybe :-)

There's a "4 cylinder" and a "6 cylinder" bellhousing. The "4 cyl"
is used with the 2 1/4 4 cylinder engine, and has 12 nuts with
a nut in the middle at the top, i.e. 12 o'clock. The "6 cyl" is
also used on Series I Land-Rovers with the 2 litre side valve
engine (it's the same engine as the LR 6 cyl) and the stud
positions are shifted (15 degrees? I think 15 degrees).

OK, so if you have the same patterns on the two bellhousings
(either 4 or 6 cyl) the adapter will work. If not, it's
probably easier getting a different bellhousing than a
new adapter.

OK, so what is a 4.1 Ford? Here in SA we know the 4.1 chev 6 cyl
well, but I don't know the Ford at all. Power? Torque?

Yup, with care you should be OK. Join the za-lro list and ask,
there are a few people there who will agree with you. Just make
sure you don't let your teenage son near the thing :-)

Overdrives are notoriously fragile. I wouldn't use one in anything
other than a shortie. Then again, my 109 with the chev 2.5 4 cyl
engine won't be able to use the overdrive, not enough power.

If you have enough power to use an overdrive in a FC, your gearbox
is in danger, methinks.

Too wide for what? It fits the chassis, and you can modify
everything around it. On the SIIA the gear linkages would
be a problem, as I said. What am I overlooking?

Now we're getting into serious rebuilding territory. Either
weld the axles to take leaf springs or weld the chassis to
take coils... rather buy a 101.

Hi TeriAnn,

Yes, my father served in New Guinea and told hair-raising stories of
cruelty beyond belief. It is not just that though, I truly find japanese
products to be very ordinary and very over-rated. That's why so many people
buy Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Jeeps etc even though the press tell us that
the japanese 4WD's are better!

I don't know, but I will investigate, thanks for the suggestion. A diesel

Hi Wouter and all,

Thanks for the reply.

The donor LR was a 'six' before it received the Ford engine, so hopefully
it will be the correct one for my S2B.

I presume the Chev 6 is a GM product. In Australia we have our native
Holden (GM) which is the most common LR conversion engine. However, maximum
capacity is 202 cubic inches (~3.4 litres) and they have too little torque
at low revs, and seriously prejudice off-road ability. The Ford engine is
from our native Ford Falcon, a simple iron in line push-rod 6. It has lots
more low revs torque than the Holden. It is not a common conversion here,
but I don't know why. I don't know actual torque and power for either engine.

Hmmm, that's a pity.

At first glance, it looked as though the heads would need to fit between
the seats but at closer look, the engine should sit low enough for the
heads to be below floor level. In view of your gearbox comments, the Rover
V8 and gearbox seems to be far the best option. Do you know if the RR
gearbox will fit the S2B transfer box? I am sure I can fix up a gear linkage.

Yeah, that is much too serious. I don't want to do anything at all that
can't be undone later. I will run it for a while with the original engine -
maybe I will grow accustomed to cruising at 50MPH....

Again, thanks for all the advice.

Cheers all,

Paul

Hi again Paul and all

What engine did your S2B have in originally? If it was the six,
then sure, that will work.

When I overhauled the 2.5 chev all the bearings and seals came
from Australia, so I'm sure you have the 4.1 there as well. It's
a slightly bigger brother of the more common 3.8, which is the
6 cylinder version of the 2.5 (2.5 / 4 * 6 = 3.75). But that's
not important.

Sounds good. A lot like the 4.1 chev.

Anything can be made to fit, I'm waiting for info on fitting
a Toyota (sorry TeriAnn :-) 5 speed box to a SII xfer box.
But again, this is major surgery.

*fifty* *miles* *per* *hour*!!! We used to *dream* of fifty
miles per hour!

Hello and top of the new year to everyone.

Thanks again for your comments Wouter. I too used to dream of 50
MPH....... but in Australia travelling at 50MPH means heros in hot
japanese hatches driving one inch from the back bumper! Not that I mind of
course, under the Bigger Car Act of 1968 the S2B would by law win in a
collision, but scratches to paintwork can get infected! Try and tell that
to the young today, they wont belive you!

I have decided on the Ford engine. The S3 donor car was great to drive with
that engine, and it has buckets of low RPM torque.

Is there anything I could do to beef up the gearbox? What is it that
normally fails from excessive power? It would also be very nice to use the
overdrive if there is any way of strengthening that? If it is mainly
bearing failure due to excess power, it may be possible to find higher load
spec bearings to fit.

If it is the cogs that wilt under power, I will just have to learn to
feather foot the throttle. No teenage sons thankfully.

Cheers to all,

Hi all,
Just joined the group.
Could any Australian FC members please let me know where you are.
I am at Palmwoods, 100 km north of Brisbane.
I am building 2 FCs, one is an ex 2A with Holden 186 petrol/lpg - I
have the cab mounted up front and am up to connecting the controls
and fabricating the front panels and bonnet. It will have an alloy
trayback for orchard work.
The second will be made from a series 3 that I am fixing the
mechanicals before doing the cab. It has a nice 3.3litre diesel 4 cyl
from a forklift. Apologies to you blokes but it is a Nissan running a
5 speed box through the LR transfer case.
I have converted it from 24 volts and will be fitting a turbocharger
that should take it from 90HP to about 135 HP. In final FC form, it
is to be a poptop, roll out sides motorhome that will follow the LR
profile for around town but open out for camping for the little lady
in our retirement.
Cheers and hope to find out where you Aussies are!

Hi Dave,

That sounds a really interesting project. I had planned to do similar to a
Range Rover, that is, converting to forward control and building a camper
on the back.

I gave up on the idea after talking to the Road Traffic Bullies, who
basically suggested that it would be impossible to get it registered, as
safety testing would require destruction testing. I am not sure that is
true, but dealing with government bullies has never been a favourite passtime.

I am in Victoria, I hope things are better in QLD.

Instead, I have bought the LR forward control vehicles and absolutely love
them. They are brilliant vehicles, so I am not altogether sorry that I have
gone this path. I will be able to spend more time on the camper body and
less on vehicle mods which is also good news. If you are ever in Victoria,
you are welcome to have a look at the factory forward controls. I have both
the S2B and the 101.

Good luck whichever way you go,

bottom)Years ago I got the present shocks from a scrap yard and they
definately didn't come of a forward control so another LR shock must
fit,but which ones?
Thanks

Good to see another kiwi on this group. There are a few.
good luck with the FC, I am keeping an eye out for one, have had a look at
one, but had a butchered motor in it, so not too interested given the last
L/R I had had this. I am hoping to get one as close to standard as
possible. Would want a project vehicle rather than a minter also. - just in
case you hear of any more
Can I ask where yours came from?

I don't know how many FCs were built with hydraulic winches as I am sure
it was an option. As the hydraulic winch operation and maintenance
is covered in the operators handbook I would guess that it was not an
uncommon option. Good luck selling it . I wish it was in Canada. Paul

It would be nice to fire up this list again!

Can I start the ball rolling with a question?

I want to fit a Rover V8 and LT95 transmission to my S2B. Does anyone know
what is involved in converting the transfer case to part time
four-wheel-drive instead of full time 4WD? This is to preserve the front
CV joints which I understand won't last with full time drive.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers to all,

Hi Paul
I have just recently done this conversion when fitting a Perkins
4236 and an LT95 gearbox to my 2A forward control.
First you need to dismantle the centre diff.
Discard the 4 bevel pinion gears.Place the rear side gear and cross
shafts back into the rear diff casing(with some sort of spacer to
fill the gap between them )and weld all 3 bit together in situ (so
you can still remove them of course). This then forms your drive and
support for the rear output shaft.
The front output shaft needs supporting with a bearing so it can
rotate independently to the diff casing. You need a bearing of the
following sizes 72mm OD 35mm ID 17mm wide. The front side gear then
needs machining to fit inside the bearing and the front diff casing
need a small ammount machining out for the bearing to be a press fit
into place.All held with Loctite.
Reassemble it all and you have Part time 4 wheel drive!
To engage 4wd you just operate the vacuum diff lock knob.
Also you can now have hi or low ratio in 2wd or 4wd.
I know this all sound really complicated so I will email you some
pics that will really help to explain it all.
Good luck if you go for it.It has given me a really strong gearbox
in my Forward Control that is well up to the job.
regards
Richard
| 252|246|2005-06-16 02:05:04|Maarten Schot|Re: Hello from new member|
Paul, I'd say try to find another gearbox with part
time 4wd, or change your front axle to something like
a stage 1 or range rover/ disco. At least, that seems
to be the general opinion. For example,
http://www.orrp.com/smf/index.php?topic=10392.0

Part time 4wd, danger of breaking the rear diff/
half-shafts, 'box, full time 4wd, breaking front
axle/half shafts etc. I haven't heard of modifying the
lt95 to part time 4wd.

There is a lot of info on converting series lr's to
V8, and I have heard of at least one IIb done.

hope this helps

Paul
I have posted the pics in the photos section as I could add an
atachment emailing you through this message board
The problem with a stage 1 front axle in your 2B is that it is a fair
bit narrower than the ENV and also not as strong
Your ENV rear axle will easily be stong enough for 2wd( have you seen
the size of the half shafts!)
I have replaced the original Rover axles on my 2A FC with a 2B front
and a S3 Salisbury rear, as they were the weak links in the drive
train and run with FWH.It now drives lovely and has (hopefully) no
weak links in the drive train

Hi Paul & all

Firstly, the series rand-lovers have universal joints in the
front axles, not CVs... that's the problem. And it's not an
issue of how long they will last -- remember last time you
turned while in 4WD and the steering wheel jogged back and
forth? That's because of the UJs. Now imagine cornering at
80 km/h in permanent 4WD and getting that effect...

Ashcroft (I think) make an adaptor to fit a standard series
transfer case to the back of the newer gearboxen. But that
would be a standard transfer case, not a FC (helical) transfer
case. But that's basically what you will need.

And then you need to make sure that your gear ratios will
work with the 900s.

Hello again everyone,

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions re fitting the LT95 to my
S2B. Wouter, that is the best answer I have ever had as to why not to use
the constant four-wheel-drive! I will try that excellent modification
suggested by Richard. It makes it sound very easy.

It is really nice to have the list a bit active again. If I may ask another
question, can anyone suggest a method of measuring the centre of gravity of
a vehicle? After I build a camper body on my S2B, I would like to know what
sort of slope I could safely traverse!

Best wishes to all,

Paul

This group seems to be gaining momentum, so here is my first post.

I have owned a 2B for about 12 years, and still it hasn't seen the
road. Hoping to get it all together soon, but life seems to keep
getting in the way. And then there's the internet..

Mine is a 2 1/4 Diesel dropside pickup, which was used as a quarry
runabout in Portsmouth for most of its life. Now in Manchester.

One thing I noticed on this group's home- and link-page: the website
for the FC register has been

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/FCRegister/fcr.htm

for quite a while now. The zoom address has no redirect on it.
Lokking at the website, the address may change again when the register
gets a new webmaster, but for now there is at least a website at the
address above.

Hope this helps.

Hello all,

just drove my first laps in my IIB for the first time,
but, without brakes. The system is renewed all round.
I have trouble bleeding them, and have tried :

- bleeding with adjusters fully out
- bleeding while pushing the slave cylinders in with
pliers
- bleeding with brakes properly adjusted
- I have bled the master cyl.

btw, I don't have a servo at the moment, do you think
I can do without one?
Any hints would be welcome, do you suggest a pressure
bleeder?

Hello,

I once had the same problem with bleeding. On my FC, the brake cylinder
inlet was on the highest point. To get of the air, you could
a) slacken the front wheel cylinder and turn them, so that the bleeding
screw and pipe front the upper to the lower cylinder are at the highest
position ( if possible) or
b) lift the front of the car, so that the air can come out ( as stated
in the workshop manual).

As the brakes of the FC are not the best one, I would not drive without
any servo,

There are some (small) drawings in the owner's handbook.
One of my S2Bs have a genuine hydraulic winch installed - I can get you
some pictures of the winch, the hydraulic PTO, and the front bumper (with
integrated rollers for the winch cable).

I may have a spare mechanical PTO suitable for the FC gearbox - I'll check
that. I seriously doubt a standard one can be made to fit, but I can
compare the FC on to a standard one and tell you what the differences
are. The location of the rear mainshaft bearing sure is different - it
shaft is longer on the FC/1-ton gearbox and the bear bearing is closer to
the rear of the gearbox. I'll get back to you with pictures and more info
ASAP.

That's correct - the winch is powered by a hydraulic PTO mounted in the

I'm quite sure I've got some... Does he also need the transfer box
internals ?

The differences between a standard box and a FC/1-ton one are :
- Gearbox mainshaft
- Gearbox output gear
- Transfer box intermediate gear
- Transfer box rear output shaft
- Transfer box output gears
- Transfer box hi/lo selector
- Front cover for transfer box selector rods

This is just from memory, so I may have forgotten something...

I thought that my own FC was a heap of rusting steel, but when I look
at your pictures I think I'm quit lucky anyway :-)

Keep up the good work! I'm very impressed!

Hi Lui,

It's been a bit of a roller-coaster ! When we got to the place we
bought it, we had a bit of a dig around and it didn't look terrible.
We knew it had rot, so weren't completely unprepared.. and besides,
I'd already decided I was having it. (Bad idea :-))

When I eventually got the thing stripped down and started banging away
at the chassis, I had a real 'downer' moment.. the rot was a lot
worse than even I had imagined. I had to walk away from it for a
week.. just couldn't see the big picture any more.

The following weekend... a couple of big sheets of steel, cutters and
a welder in hand.. I got to work, and managed to get myself back in
the swing. Now it's all systems go again... so hopefully there will
be a lot more updates :-)

Hi all,
after a long search I have found a parts catalogue for Series IIA and
IIB Forward Control (Part No.: 4862) and I have started to scan the
book. In the "Files"-Folder you can find the first files and I'll add
the rest as soon as possible. I hope, there will be no problems with
copyright, so please use the files only as a copy for working in your
garage and don't distribute or sell the files.
Another question:
Does anybody know, what happend to the company, I think it was "Gulf
Industries CC" in Randburg SA, who build the Overlander Forward
Control? I'am interested in how many cars of this type have been
build. I like my S2B Fire-Tender very much, but if I get the chance,
to get such a Overlander, I will buy it as a second car... (I hope, my
girl-friend doesn't read this message ;-).
But the possibilities to get one, especially here in Germany are very
low.

All the best

I seem to remember the guy's called Jan Vorster? Met him, briefly,
once... he's a bit OTT with his forward controls, for example, he
has two full size gas bottles bolted to the back. Seriously large
diesel engine, 1000 litres of fuel, etc, etc...

I know people who might know... as far as I know he started with
something like 20 forward controls he bought from the army at an
auction... but I'm probably wrong...

I'm in Randburg but I think they closed down years ago. The guy went

still pick up a second hand one here in South Africa. They are
fantastically fitted and they go for about ZAR60-R80k. That's about
8000 - 10000 Euros, plus shipping and any import duties you may have
to pay. And of course they are right hand drive, so that might also be
a problem.

Do you have a copy of the original brochures?

Hi Hilton,
I have a copy of the brochures in the "Files"-folder.
Right hand drive wouldn't be the biggest problem. I
had a 88 RHD and, let's say, it was interesting to
drive it here in Germany. And an Overlander wouldn't
be a car for daily use.
10000 Euros plus all the other costs isn't cheap, but
for special things you have to pay special prices.
I was also thinking about flying to South Africa and,
if I found one I'd like to buy, drive it back home the
10000 miles trough Africa. That wouldn't be cheaper,
but more fun. But I think, my boss wouldn't be very
happy, if I apply for leave for two month...
Another alternative would be to collect everything I
can get (pictures, plans, etc.) about the Overlander
and start to build a camper-projekt using
"Overlander"-style. But it would take a long time to
finish this projekt.
Many possibilities and I don't know how to decide.
So I'll start to collect documents and maybe, I'll
find a car in South Africa or somewhere else.
Let's wait and see.

Best wishes

Hi Andreas,

I live in South Africa for the last 30 years, but have never seen an Overlander FC, only the normal IIA / IIB with modified bodies, and not many of them. I bought a IIB with a clinic body, which I will change to a camper over time. I received an original brochure with the lay-out of the Overlander from a helpful person of the group, which I can send to you.

If you are really interested in the FC, I know somebody, who builds all kinds of Landys together with new and/or used parts and sells them then. At the moment, he has two FC for sale (so I am told). I can see him in about 2 or 3 weeks time and have a discussion with him.

By the way, where in Germany do you live? I grew up south of Ulm and spent lots of time near Kaufbeuren (Air Force) in Bavaria.

Give me a call, if I can be of assistance.

Cheers und viel Glück zu Deinem Projekt,
Gunther.

Considering that the FC is out of production by about 30 years and the

publish the parts catelog, copyrights aside of course.

Hi all,
another suggestion for the files:
Everyone who needs the files should download the first tree parts.
Then let's say on April the 20th I'll delete them and post the next
ones (and a message so everyone knows). Wouter and Tim have free disk
space. Maybe they put the files at their webservers.
About copyright:
I think the number of existing FC's is to small that you can get rich
by selling this files. And, if we transfer the files only in this
group and use it as copies for work at our cars, I hope we won't get
problems.
But in the end this will be an illegal action.
So if you don't own an orginal Catalogue, don't download the files or
you would be a bad, bad, illegal person......;-)

Cheers

Andy

PS: I have also scaned the Instruction Manual for IIB (wait and
see).......

Hi Gunther,

is it the same brochure like the brochure of Johan
Bees? If not, please send a copy to me. Well, I think
the easiest way will be to build a new camper cabine.
Maybe I'll find a way that I can change between my
orginal fire-tender cabine and the camper cabine.
I am located in East Bavaria about one mile to the
czechien border. The town is called "Furth im Wald".
The way to the czechien capital Prag is much shorter
than the way to for example Munich...

Cheers

Andy

New member. I just bought a FC 2B to build a camper. Wouter pointed me
in the direction of the group. Have also spoken to Gunter. It doesn't
have any body on it. I am looking for suggestions of what kind of body
and layout to use.

What other tyres can be used in the place of the 9/00*16? Somebody
mentioned 33/12.5*15 inch.

Hi Gerhard and all

This is a quiet list, but I believe there are a few people
who know their Forward Controls.

Paul Oxley is on the right track with the width, but I believe
his camper is too high.

If you look at the pics on my page, I have the wide army body.
Beautiful piece of work (aliminium throughout) but too wide.

I plan on making something as wide as the front wheelarches and
as high as my 109 Stationwagon with roofrack and ammo boxes. That
proved to be pretty much the limit for travelling through
Mozambique. Pim with his 101 ambulance had great fun, he had to
stop to cut branches and ended up very tense thinking he was going
to break something.

That makes a pop-top essential, I think.

How much is too high? Is 2.5m reasonable or is that still to high.

Is restricting the width to do with getting stuck - not enough space
on certain roads or is it because of weight/engine power needed?

On 7/1/06, walkingcga <walkingcga@... I personally don't believe the width is an issue. On my FC, the body
looks incredibly wide but when you actually measure it, it's only
about 8cm wider on each side than a standard 110 (across the
eyebrows).

So is this really an issue? I think extra height is something that you
need to watch out for. (ferry crossing, bridges, overhanging trees
etc).

Hi Gerhard

The yellow Rand-Lover measures 2.2 m to the top of the roofrack. When I'm
in the bush, I have a few crates and stuff up there.
http://www.retro.co.za/lr/trips/50th/el009.jpg

That takes it up to around 2.4 metres, and that's high enough. I could get
that through Mozambique while Pim had serious hassles.

Not as far down the line as I'd like to be yet. The chassis needed
some fairly major reconstruction and there has been a bit of juggling
to get the engine and box in there. (4.0 L V8 with Auto)

The next big push will be to get the floor supports in place and start
on the body shell. Still all in the design stages at the moment, as
I'm trying to keep everything as light as possible.

......this seemed like a good idea at the time !

Can anyone send me a photo of a FC PTO?

The engine is from a P38a Range Rover. GEMS controlled, so loads of
power, not afraid of water and minimal maintenance to keep running.
It is mated to a ZF4 auto box from a RR Classic with an LT230 transfer
box from a LR 90. I've always been a fan of autos, and for a forward
control project it really does simplify a few things too !

Rear axle is a Disc-braked axle from a Range Rover converted to run on
leaf springs. This gives me some sane braking, a nice ratio diff for
the engine / box. It has pretty much the same track as the ENV axle
so stability is OK. I'm not too worried about the weight capacity,
since it is never going to be loaded to the original FC specs !

Front axle is from a Series 3 Stage 1 V8... so it has CV joints
rather than UJs. It's about the only direct bolt-on axle with leaf
springs and CV joints. The track is a little narrower, so it is
fitted with some machined spacers between the chrome ball and the axle
case. By a staggering co-incidence, these spacers make the over sizes
correct so I can use halfshafts from a coil sprung Land Rover ;-)

I've got a disc brake conversion kit for the front axle so I can stop
! (I knew all these things I've been collecting for years would come
in handy one day !!)

I have heavy duty half shafts for both axles, and I also have an ARB
locker for the back, along with a limited slip diff for the front...
this really is going to be an all-terrain camper

Now... I did agonise over all of this for some time... I've never
been one to butcher vehicles for the sake of it, and I did think long
and hard about using original specs / parts. I have a complete
gearbox here that came with the pile of chassis... but I don't really
know what condition it is in. I also have both front and rear ENV
axles... which both seem to be in good condition. Thing is... I am
going to be using this thing "properly" and I came to the conclusion
that availability of spares was an important factor, so using more
common components for the drivetrain seemed like a good idea.

I also justified it to myself a bit with the rationale that if I
didn't go down this route, I wouldn't be building the camper and the
vehicle would have rotted away to a small pile of oxide by now.

Restoration purists, you may now look at the screen again....

...and of course, all the bolts will line up properly when it is done,
and I'll be choosing the brand of polish very carefully :-)
| 327|306|2006-08-13 01:55:33|Tim Burt|Re: New member|
--- In 109fc@yahoogroups.com, "walkingcga" should work well on the vehicle. I don't think I'd be wanting to run
a 12.5" wide tyre purely because of the amount of work you'll have to
do with the steering wheel ! Big wide tyres will tend to 'tramline' a
lot more and will be heavier to turn at low speeds.

It seems like a long way away, but when it's finished, mine will be
sitting on a set of Simex Jungle Trekkers :-)

I have been a member, and should probably renew my membership.

Even before its demise, the website was quite stagnant.
A call was made for volunteers to take over as webmaster, but nothing
came of this.

The register itself is still going, and lots of the members are very
knowledgeable and/or have spare parts when you need them. It tends to
be based around yorkshire, and many of the members just don't do the
internet (these two facts may or may not be connected). The actual
register of vehicles is an interesting and useful document for anyone
wanting to know who owns which FC and where. It is given to FCR
members only.

I was sitting in the workshop with a cup of tea a couple of days ago,
and I got to thinking..... (always a dangerous thing)

The project has now taken a new direction..... the camper body isn't
going to be built on the vehicle itself, but I've decided that I'm
going to build a 5th wheel camper instead :-)

The Forward Control is now destined to become a double-cab with a
hi-cap pickup body on the back, and there will be a matching goosneck
trailer with a 5th wheel coupling on the vehicle.

I don't think there is any particular logic to this decision... but
heck.. I've never been one for owning a "normal" vehicle :-)
| 336|335|2006-09-03 08:19:58|Paul Scherek|Re: I think the insanity has set in !|
There is a lot to be said for a 5th wheeler, but ultimately they have the
same problem as towing a caravan - one can't risk heading down a track
unless you are certain that you can get out the other side. There are just
so many tracks where there are simply no places a large vehicle/trailer
combination can turn around.

It's not much fun backing a combination along 10 miles of winding mountain
road because a bridge was down and you couldn't turn around.....

Otherwise, sounds a great project! Please keep us all informed.

Cheers all,

Paul

Fair point... but to be honest, it's not much of a problem in the UK..
you'd be hard pressed to find 10 miles of mountain road you're
allowed to drive on ;-)

The other trips I have planned in my addled brain shouldn't present
much of an issue either.

The thinking is that by changing to this design that I will keep a
versatile, practical vehicle and will also be able to have a larger
accomodation than I could on-board.

You never know... I might come up with a different hair-brained scheme

A brilliant looking piece of work. You live in the right part of the world,

Look forward to seeing photos of your trips!

We used the rounded bonnet winglets to give us the shape, fabricated a frame
out of 25mm square tubing. Put 2mm sheet steel on the outside (so we could
easily fettle it down to a smooth, even finish). We have a layer of 25mm
polystyrene inside for insulation and an internal covering of .7mm ally. We
put a 10mm sheet of pre-curved smoked lexan in the front to prevent bird
strike breakages, with a 750mm square hatch on top for air movement and
photography.

Hi everybody,

I am finally continuing with the Forward Control IIB project. The engine to be installed is an imported Toyota 3CT, the gear box an overhauled Santana. At the moment I am looking for the following spares:

Main gear lever and linkages.

Gear box cross member.

Prop shafts front and back.

Spare wheel carrier.

Front grill with Land Rover logo.

I was offered these spares by a Johannesburg company, but at inflated prices (in my opinion), like R500 + VAT for the gear lever, R275 + VAT for the front grill etc.

Questions:

Where can I get these parts for a decent price?

Does anybody know of a wrecked Forward Control, which I could buy?

I have also an overhauled Chev 4.1 engine, which I do not need anymore. Anybody interested to buy?

Any help really appreciated, I live in South Africa. I kept an exact log re. costs incurred so far and contacts I know (spares, LR mechanics in SA etc.). Feel free to ask for a copy.

Kind regards,

Gunther Kanz.

Does anyone know where one can buy new front springs for a 109 FC - or can
one use one from a different L/R - Mine are very flat and need replacing or
reconditioning.

Hi Guy,

The front springs from a 109 station wagon should be OK on there. You
have a couple of choices for the rates on there depending if the
vehicle is petrol or diesel, etc. Any decent Land Rover parts company
should be able to supply them for sensible money.

Why don't you just get them re-tensioned? Any spring related
industrial place will be able to do it.

I was just clearing out the camera and stumbled across a couple of
pictures of the FC.

It's much the same now as it was then, I have vowed not to start on it
until at least 2 of the other current projects are done !

If anyone is bored, I've dropped them in the gallery on here :

Hi Guy,

How did you get on with this ? I did have a thought, that maybe
parabolics might increase body roll a fair bit due to the height of
the FC.

It's well worth changing the bushes at the same time as the springs..
even on standard springs these can make a big difference to the
quality of the ride.

Hi thanks for your message- I have been wondering if going for parabpolics
is sensible - ideally I need heavy duty ones but I don't think anyone does
them.

I am thinking of waiting until after Sodbury - or Newbury now and seeing
what I can find. At the moment the rear spring hangers are touching the
chassis so the suspension can't move much!

I was also going to ask the same question on the Series 2 Club forum - but
am still waiting for a password.

This is a quick call out to see if anyone is still using the board
and/or paying attention.

I've been posting on the series 2 club board about my little project,
"Clifford". Pics can be seen here:
http://www.s2cforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=14510.0

Clifford is a 1963 SIIA FC with the 2.6l 6-cyl petrol motor. He was
an export to Austria where he was turned into a coachbuilt search and
rescue vehicle.

We are a Land Rover Centre here in Las Vegas and are refurbishing
Clifford for use as a Marketing Vehicle. The 2.6 runs very well and
we are doing bodywork on him as we speak.

Just wanted to say hello.

Hi Trevor,

the 109fc group seems to be very quiet lately. The last time, I received a
message, must have been about 1/2 year ago.

I own a FC IIB, bought more than 1 year ago in South Africa. She comes slowly
to
life again. The engine is in (a Toyota 3CT turbo diesel), the gearbox is also
installed (Santana from Spain). Brakes, axels, lights all have been done. The
truck should be ready in about 1 - 2 months time. I live in South Africa (50 km
north of Durban), but are at the moment in Brisbane - Australia, visiting my
son and his family.

Any Rangie / Forward Control fan around in Brisbane?

Can anyone tell me, how to change my e-mail address withhout the password? Lost
it.

A photo of the FC in the early stages is attached. Can I be of any assistance?

Kind regards,
Gunther (ZS5GUN).

Nope. In some ways the S2B was better sorted, but either of them are an
absolute hoot to use. All Land Rovers are fun, but the Forward Control
models re-define the expression "full of character".

Good luck - and keep us posted.

Hi Leon,
Good hear from you.

I'm afraid I missed it - it was on Trademe. My son noticed the ad on Sunday and told me about it. I asked him to find out from the owner what the tyres were like (not interested if it was on 7.50s!) and registration status, and to get a time to inspect it. Tuesday evening I reminded him and went to look at the ad again to double check some details. The ad had been withdrawn. It was a 1963 IIa with an full metal canopy over the back, and 33,000 miles under its belt. It had been in dry storage for some time, but had all its fluids replaced and had been started. It's body looked faded but pretty straight, in fact almost amazingly straight. It had all its light lenses and they all had wonderful military-looking guards over them. It certainly wasn't showroom condition, but it was way better than any FC I've seen for years.

The ad had an asking price of $5k, and apparently it sold for $5,600 - it would have to be a real bargain at that price. I'm in North Canterbury, and it was in Christchurch.

Bit of a bummer really, but I'll keep an eye out for another one now that I've got interested. (it had the ordinary 4cylinder petrol motor)

regards

Fred

| 365|355|2007-12-17 05:37:59|Fred Murray|Re: New SIIA Forward Control Owner across the pond|
Hi Leon,

I want to acquire a preferably elderly Landy pretty soon - I'll flag away the idea of an FC for the time being - I actually need a usable one, nit that I'm denigrating the FCs. There's a nice 101 ambulance in Chch, but it's a helluva price and it is really pretty much in its ex-army state. I've always admired the looks of the S2a and b FCs - believe it or not, in the early 1970s one of my friends converted a 109 S2 into a FC, and a couple of years later, another one converted a S2b FC into a 109 (or perhaps it was a 110). The s2a on Trademe looked to have a pretty good history, and I haven't seen one for years that didn't look pretty thoroughly abused.

They made a lasting impression on everyone who ever saw one during their heyday!

Hi There!
I live in Austria/Vorarlberg and bought a 1966 6cylinder FWC last year.
Over winter i was collecting spares and energie to start the
restauration. now i have almost finished - but i m in need of a new
waterpump. as i have removed the fan propshaft and installed an
electric fan i wanted to change the fan pulley on my waterpump. i did
so also because the pulley from the other 6pot engines is easier to
remove. i went to a local machine shop to do the pressing - but there
they destoryed the impeller of the waterpump. i have got three spare
pumps here - but they all fit the later 6pot engines. mine is suffix b
and now i m searching this old waterpump. tried the local dealers,
german and swiss landrover clubs, the 6 pot forum and the serie 2
forum - no success even no answers. now i found this discussion group -
maybe here i find some help. i would need a new waterpump for the
suffix b 6pot, or a used one or defective one with good impeller. can
anybody help me - otherwise i have to quit the restauration and my fwc
project.

greetings from austria - gert
ps: hope my english is good enough

Hi Gert,

I'm in New Zealand. How bad is your existing impeller?

I have seen a Landrover impeller rebuilt with Araldite, and machined back to the correct dimensiion. It functioned perfectly for years afterwards.

Good luck with the project anyway.

i'm in conatct with a rover dealer in england but everyone seems to be
unsure which pump will fit. sent my pump to a special shop in germany

organize something like a spares organisation. spares are getting rare!
| 375|370|2008-05-30 12:50:42|Paul Scherek|Re: Serie IIA FWC Restoration|
If you are not concerned about originality, electric water pumps are a
very practical and cheap alternative. They are quieter, use less engine
power and provide a much more satisfactory means of keeping the engine
temperature correct. Instead of a thermostat re-directing water to keep
temperature constant, the electric pumps adjust their speed accordingly.
No thermostat needed.

Hi Guy,

I'm looking at the same project + a lot of other upgrades.

Try and have a look at this long thread on the subject:

Rebuild of a 2B Forward Control

http://forum.landrovernet.com/showthread.php?t=113785

Marc has chosen a 300tdi instead, after a lot of consideration. But
there are are a lot of good technically discussions in thread on
related problems during the rebuild.

It's a long thread, but it's quit entertaining to read :-)

The other day I came across a wee bit more extreme conversion, on a
Forward Control, called "Le Frog".

Here Simon is using a huge cummins 6B 5.9 litre straight-6 diesel
engine taken from a small DAF truck, is shoe-horned down in the
chassis. A kind of dragster-forward control :-) Great fun to read:

http://www.lrs2c.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=f807abef77c3c7777adac6db413eb5dc&topic=21152.msg198100#msg198100

I'm sure I have seen specific 200tdi FC conversion done somewhere on
the internet, but I never got aorund to bookmark the pages. If I find
them I'll post the links here.
