I've been told by a local L-R garage that one of those engines did make it to New Zealand in an imported 109 Station Wagon. Haven't seen it myself but it is a 3.4L 6 cly version of the 2.25L 4 cly, available in petrol and diesel.

I've just joined this list (I've been on the 101 list for a
while, but hey, I didn't *know* of this list 'till this
morning) and I'm reading the archives so that I don't make
a fool of myself by asking TeriAnn who made her the list
mom (*wave* Hi TeriAnn :-)
Jeremy, two questions. Firstly, you must be the guy who put
that pic on the files section of the 101 list, with the 101
and the 109. I want to use it in my FAQ (BTW, are there any
other 109FC FAQs out there? I don't think so...) Permission
please?
http://www.retro.co.za/landy/FC/109FCFAQ.html. Secondly, way back in 1999, you said:
I want!
Not any more, I don't think.
I have the IIA Bonneted + FC Workshop Manual, which obviously
does not cover the IIB. I'm scanning the supplement, which I
will post unles physically restrained by someone's lawyer. If
the parts manual etc. is NLA, I would like to do the same to
it.

I even discovered that the 109fc mail filter did not survive the latest
updates here and the 109fc mails ended up in my regular Inbox, so this list
must have been quite for quite a while.
As for the question about manuals, I got a SIIa/SIIb parts catalog from
Mansfield Motors (I think) a while back.
I do not have any workshop manual covering the forward control models, but
would like a copy if somebody knows where I can find one. I am not
ancouraging anbody out there to break any laws and send me (potentially)
illegal copies of coyrighted manuals, but if somebody does I will be the
last person to report the "crime" ;-)
At the moment I have 2 Forward Controls, one (or maybe I should say about
0.8) Series IIb truck cab (with most of the rear body/loadbed missing) and
a "cherry picker" just purchased on ebay and hopefully about to start its
journey across the North Sea to its new home in Norway.

The FC is a 2.25l. I'm 85% through re-wiring the whole machine. Shouldn't be long before I'm finished. Body-work is good. Origional Engine etc. Only done 200 hours in it's lifetime (apparently) so engine is probably still great. Been standing for quite a while though. I'm looking for SAR 7500.00. 187|183|2003-08-01 14:39:09|Johan B|Re: Photos|Hello Lui,
How does the shower work ?
Very similar to that inside a house, hot & cold water
Is there a drain in floor?
Yes - unfortunately it is on the same side as the side door i.e.
where people would sit.
And how do you keep water from getting all over the place ?
One can hang a plastic curtain. The curtain reaches all the way to
the floor. The "shower" is really just a very small square bath
(about 600x600 and about 500 deep)
Is it hot running water ? I noticed the gasheater above the
kitchensink.
Very hot water - almost hot enough for coffee. Downside is that the
gasheater is almost against the roof leaving black smoke stains that
must be washed off after every use. Easiest of all is just to hang it
through the side window.
I have seen quite a few "Overlander´s" on the web. I even saw one on

Do you or somebody in this forum know who build them and how many

You are quite right! They WERE built in SA, not anymore. What
happened was that this guy, Jan Vorster, bought a number of these
from the SA army and built them all the same way. Even down to the
exterior painting. I even have an electronic version of the

Thanks for the photos Johan ! They were very informative ! I´m really

I´m sorry that I can´t provide some photos of my own FC. It's
standing in the back of my uncle's barn behind a big haystack from
this recent harvest. So I wan't be able to get out before early next
year.
Anyways; I went through my files, and came about some different
camper version I found on the web, be searching for Land Rover + FC +
Africa in Google, which I have postet in Photo Album under "Campers".
The ones stuck in sand + Fordie and Witlands is probably of the same
herritage as yours, be the rest is quit different I think.
Unfortunately the pictures is the only info I got, but I´ll try to
gather some more information about the respective vehicles. So if any
on this list have some more info or camper photos, I´ll be very
interested.
Camper3 is shot at The Billing Show in UK (2001 ?), and is quite
similar to the ZA-build ones, but the pop-up roof is a new feature.
Nice if you measure 1.88 cm. !
One last thing. Johan you asked for a link to the "Overland" I have

189|183|2003-08-08 13:05:17|Hilton J Ralphs|Re: Photos|Hi Lui
There was a guy here in South Africa called Jan Vorster who under the guise
of Gulf Industries built about 80 of the 'Overlanders'. I'm not totally sure
about the actual number though.
They had the original 2.6P engine and as most know, it's pretty useless in
the heavy FC. A lot of buyers have upgraded to a Chev 4.1 or 4.9. Some have
even gone the route of Tdis but I'm not sure about the transmission changes.
Let me clarify my statement about the 2.6P. If you want to travel in
Southern Africa, there's a lot of distance to cover before you actually get
anywhere, so you ideally want to be able to cruise at least 80km/h fully
loaded. As there are generally no facilities in the more remote spots, you
have to take about 200l of fuel and a similar quantity of water. Plus most
of your food.
So basically the 2.6P just doesn't cut it. Fuel consumption is another big
factor apart from range and cruising speed.
Bear in mind that the FC that Johan has is the IIB which had the 110"
wheelbase, so I suppose it's technically 'off topic' for this forum.
All in all a pretty cool way to explore the wonders of Africa!
Cheers

When I arrived at the port to pick it up, the guys at the cargo terminal

I have not really had time to look at it in detail yet but I did see that
what the seller described as a V4 engine actually had 6 cylinders. The
cylinders were in-line and the engine sure looks like a good(?) old LR 2.6l
unit.
As my intention is to restore the vehicle this has probably saved me a
long, difficult, and maybe expensive hunt for a LR engine :-)
I will take some pictures and post on the web ASAP. (The pictures from the
eBay listing are already out there.)
Does anybody out there have any info on the Spencer (or other) cherry
picker conversions ? I would like to know as much as possible about the
vehicle to (try to) avoid mistakes during the restoration.

Not much, really. I have been quite busy trying to complete other

been much time for LR activities :-(
I have managed to get some info about its history. A number of these

later became BT), mine is now confirmed to be one of these vehicles.
I have got info about the correct livery and also info about how the
vehicles were equipped. Sadly, this means that a lot of bits are
missing from mine... I have located another one that will be used as

Can anyone advise me please of the ease of fitting alternate engines,
particularly the Rover V8, to my 110 S2B forward control? Are there
any other engines that are a known easy fit? Will the diffs and axles
handle the extra power?
Is there a practical way to increase power from the six cylinder
Rover engine?
Has anyone tried fitting the constant 4WD transfer and gearbox from
the Stage 1 Land Rover or Range Rover?
Any advice to a new S2B owner gratefully received!
Thanks all,

203|201|2003-12-24 08:53:22|yahoo@dW.co.za|Re: S2B alternate engine?|Hi
It depends :-)
Your axles should be ENV or Salisbury (As far as I know you won't
find Rover axles on a 110FC, only on the early 109FCs). All the
110FCs I've seen in South Africa uses the Salisbury axles. In any
case, I don't think your axles are the weakest point, your gearbox
is.
Your *gearbox* is either a SIIA unit or a SIII/1 tonne unit (if you
got the FC from the SA army :-) The SIIA gearbox is the strongest
series box, but that doesn't say much. In South Africa, the
Chev 4.1 6 cylinder engine is very popular, and it DOES break
the SIIA box if you're not careful. I would say that the gearbox
can *just* handle the 4.1 chev power output, *if* you're careful.
So that gives you a torque limit of about 317 Nm (the figure I
have for the Chev 4.1). The Rover V8 generates 224 Nm, so it
should be OK, BUT when Rover brought out the Stage 1 they
upgraded the gearbox to the Range Rover unit -- i.e. the Rover
engineers did not feel that the (SIII) box could handle the V8.
I think you will get away with it, if you're a careful driver
and you stick to the stock 3.5 V8 and not one of the later
more powerful units...
Nope. It's a beautiful engine, but it's an ancient design.
The people who know tell me that you can't use a permament 4WD
gearbox if you have universal joints in your front axles -- you
need a front axle with CV joints. I contemplated this and realised
that it becomes an issue of jacking up the FC body and replacing
everything underneath with Range Rover parts... rather buy a 101FC.
An alternative, I've heard, is to replace the gearbox only, keeping
the SII transfer case etc. I'm waiting for more info, will post
it to my pages when I get it.
Look at TeriAnn's pages (wave hi :-) at www.cruzers.com/~twakeman.
I assume you have looked at my pages? *grin*
BTW on the SIIA FC the linkages run close to the engine so
everything I've said above may or may not apply :-)

204|201|2003-12-24 08:54:10|knutketil|Re: S2B alternate engine?|Hello again,
Nice to see you here, too :-)
The easiest fit will be a 3.0l Rover 6 cyl from a Rover car (Rover
100 or 110).
If you change the bellhousing to a 4-cyl type you may fit a 4 cyl
engine from a LR - 2.5l petrol or diesel or a Tdi diesel.
There are also convertion kits / adapters available to fit either the
Rover V8 or different kinds of diesel engines (Perkins etc.) - these
are all for the 4-cyl bellhousing, I think.
As you have got a S2B your vehicle has the ENV axles so you don't
have to worry about the axles or diffs unless you install a really
big engine :-) The gearbox, however, may not be able to cope with
the extra power or a larger engine.
I have not seen any FC with the LT95 gearbox (Stage1/RR) but I have
seen one with a 300Tdi engine and a R380 constant 4WD box...

I assume you're from Australia, so my advise is to
look for a Perentie, Land Rover made for the
Australian Army. It uses the Isuzu 3.9L 4-cyl diesel,
which will give you plenty of power and a pretty low
fuel consumption, compared to the old 6 straight or
the V8 petrol engines.
To get started please look at :
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~lloyd/4/LandRover/Perentie/ There are plenty of series 2 and 3 with this kind of
engine transplant in europe, but an adapterplate is
needed if the enigne come straight from an Izusu van
or pick-up. The ones from the Perentie fit on the
LT95, so there must some way to make it fit earlier
non permanent 4WD gearboxes (fx. LT85 Santana gearbox
?).
Anyways, I´m planning on the 200 Tdi which bolt
straight on the series gearbox and torque is about the
same as the 6 cyl. petrol, so diffs and axles shold be
OK. But I have no idea if the 200 Tdi ever made Down
Under.
I would also like to know if anyone has tried fitting
the constant 4WD transfer and gearbox LT95 in a FC
2A/2B. Rumour has it that the axles won't handle the
ekstra stress, but as long as you don't use a to
powerfull engine what's the problem then ?

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I have obtained a Ford 4.1 engine
attached to a blown Series 3 gearbox (ran out of oil!). I presume the
bell-housing adaptor will enable me to fit this engine to my Series 2B
gearbox, and hopefully with care I won't blow my gearbox. I have an
overdrive unit to fit to my gearbox - do you think it would handle the
power of the Ford engine?
I would prefer to fit the RR V8 engine, but at a quick look it seems too
wide. I will get out with the tape measure and check it out. If it fits,
that would be ideal, I could retain my transfer box and fit the RR gearbox.
Very interesting point about the requirement for CV joints c/w uni joints
for the constant 4WD. It would be tempting to fit a RR axle just to get the
disc brakes, but I think they have a narrower track than the 2B.
Thanks again for the excellent info, and yes, I have read every word on
your web site - even the bit on micros. I work with 87C51 series micros
every day.

214|201|2003-12-29 22:33:07|yahoo@dW.co.za|Re: S2B alternate engine?|Hi Paul & all
Erm, maybe :-)
There's a "4 cylinder" and a "6 cylinder" bellhousing. The "4 cyl"
is used with the 2 1/4 4 cylinder engine, and has 12 nuts with
a nut in the middle at the top, i.e. 12 o'clock. The "6 cyl" is
also used on Series I Land-Rovers with the 2 litre side valve
engine (it's the same engine as the LR 6 cyl) and the stud
positions are shifted (15 degrees? I think 15 degrees).
OK, so if you have the same patterns on the two bellhousings
(either 4 or 6 cyl) the adapter will work. If not, it's
probably easier getting a different bellhousing than a
new adapter.
OK, so what is a 4.1 Ford? Here in SA we know the 4.1 chev 6 cyl
well, but I don't know the Ford at all. Power? Torque?
Yup, with care you should be OK. Join the za-lro list and ask,
there are a few people there who will agree with you. Just make
sure you don't let your teenage son near the thing :-)
Overdrives are notoriously fragile. I wouldn't use one in anything
other than a shortie. Then again, my 109 with the chev 2.5 4 cyl
engine won't be able to use the overdrive, not enough power.
If you have enough power to use an overdrive in a FC, your gearbox
is in danger, methinks.
Too wide for what? It fits the chassis, and you can modify
everything around it. On the SIIA the gear linkages would
be a problem, as I said. What am I overlooking?
Now we're getting into serious rebuilding territory. Either
weld the axles to take leaf springs or weld the chassis to
take coils... rather buy a 101.

216|201|2003-12-30 05:52:55|Paul Scherek|Re: S2B alternate engine?|Hi Wouter and all,
Thanks for the reply.
The donor LR was a 'six' before it received the Ford engine, so hopefully
it will be the correct one for my S2B.
I presume the Chev 6 is a GM product. In Australia we have our native
Holden (GM) which is the most common LR conversion engine. However, maximum
capacity is 202 cubic inches (~3.4 litres) and they have too little torque
at low revs, and seriously prejudice off-road ability. The Ford engine is
from our native Ford Falcon, a simple iron in line push-rod 6. It has lots
more low revs torque than the Holden. It is not a common conversion here,
but I don't know why. I don't know actual torque and power for either engine.
Hmmm, that's a pity.
At first glance, it looked as though the heads would need to fit between
the seats but at closer look, the engine should sit low enough for the
heads to be below floor level. In view of your gearbox comments, the Rover
V8 and gearbox seems to be far the best option. Do you know if the RR
gearbox will fit the S2B transfer box? I am sure I can fix up a gear linkage.
Yeah, that is much too serious. I don't want to do anything at all that
can't be undone later. I will run it for a while with the original engine -
maybe I will grow accustomed to cruising at 50MPH....
Again, thanks for all the advice.
Cheers all,

217|201|2003-12-31 22:01:20|yahoo@dW.co.za|Re: S2B alternate engine?|Hi again Paul and all
What engine did your S2B have in originally? If it was the six,
then sure, that will work.
When I overhauled the 2.5 chev all the bearings and seals came
from Australia, so I'm sure you have the 4.1 there as well. It's
a slightly bigger brother of the more common 3.8, which is the
6 cylinder version of the 2.5 (2.5 / 4 * 6 = 3.75). But that's
not important.
Sounds good. A lot like the 4.1 chev.
Anything can be made to fit, I'm waiting for info on fitting
a Toyota (sorry TeriAnn :-) 5 speed box to a SII xfer box.
But again, this is major surgery.

Thanks again for your comments Wouter. I too used to dream of 50
MPH....... but in Australia travelling at 50MPH means heros in hot
japanese hatches driving one inch from the back bumper! Not that I mind of
course, under the Bigger Car Act of 1968 the S2B would by law win in a
collision, but scratches to paintwork can get infected! Try and tell that
to the young today, they wont belive you!
I have decided on the Ford engine. The S3 donor car was great to drive with
that engine, and it has buckets of low RPM torque.
Is there anything I could do to beef up the gearbox? What is it that
normally fails from excessive power? It would also be very nice to use the
overdrive if there is any way of strengthening that? If it is mainly
bearing failure due to excess power, it may be possible to find higher load
spec bearings to fit.
If it is the cogs that wilt under power, I will just have to learn to
feather foot the throttle. No teenage sons thankfully.
Cheers to all,

That sounds a really interesting project. I had planned to do similar to a
Range Rover, that is, converting to forward control and building a camper
on the back.
I gave up on the idea after talking to the Road Traffic Bullies, who
basically suggested that it would be impossible to get it registered, as
safety testing would require destruction testing. I am not sure that is
true, but dealing with government bullies has never been a favourite passtime.
I am in Victoria, I hope things are better in QLD.
Instead, I have bought the LR forward control vehicles and absolutely love
them. They are brilliant vehicles, so I am not altogether sorry that I have
gone this path. I will be able to spend more time on the camper body and
less on vehicle mods which is also good news. If you are ever in Victoria,
you are welcome to have a look at the factory forward controls. I have both
the S2B and the 101.
Good luck whichever way you go,

I have a Series 2A Forward Control. The rear shock absorbers need

so if they'll fit I'd rather use them. Also could I use Heavy Duty 109
ones? Do they have the same fittings?(ring at top and stud at the

definately didn't come of a forward control so another LR shock must
fit,but which ones?

Can I start the ball rolling with a question?
I want to fit a Rover V8 and LT95 transmission to my S2B. Does anyone know
what is involved in converting the transfer case to part time
four-wheel-drive instead of full time 4WD? This is to preserve the front
CV joints which I understand won't last with full time drive.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

251|246|2005-06-16 01:59:45|dickandjill|Re: Hello from new member|Hi Paul
I have just recently done this conversion when fitting a Perkins
4236 and an LT95 gearbox to my 2A forward control.
First you need to dismantle the centre diff.
Discard the 4 bevel pinion gears.Place the rear side gear and cross
shafts back into the rear diff casing(with some sort of spacer to
fill the gap between them )and weld all 3 bit together in situ (so
you can still remove them of course). This then forms your drive and
support for the rear output shaft.
The front output shaft needs supporting with a bearing so it can
rotate independently to the diff casing. You need a bearing of the
following sizes 72mm OD 35mm ID 17mm wide. The front side gear then
needs machining to fit inside the bearing and the front diff casing
need a small ammount machining out for the bearing to be a press fit
into place.All held with Loctite.
Reassemble it all and you have Part time 4 wheel drive!
To engage 4wd you just operate the vacuum diff lock knob.
Also you can now have hi or low ratio in 2wd or 4wd.
I know this all sound really complicated so I will email you some
pics that will really help to explain it all.
Good luck if you go for it.It has given me a really strong gearbox
in my Forward Control that is well up to the job.
regards
Richard

252|246|2005-06-16 02:05:04|Maarten Schot|Re: Hello from new member|Paul, I'd say try to find another gearbox with part

a stage 1 or range rover/ disco. At least, that seems
to be the general opinion. For example,
http://www.orrp.com/smf/index.php?topic=10392.0 Part time 4wd, danger of breaking the rear diff/
half-shafts, 'box, full time 4wd, breaking front
axle/half shafts etc. I haven't heard of modifying the

I have posted the pics in the photos section as I could add an
atachment emailing you through this message board
The problem with a stage 1 front axle in your 2B is that it is a fair
bit narrower than the ENV and also not as strong
Your ENV rear axle will easily be stong enough for 2wd( have you seen
the size of the half shafts!)
I have replaced the original Rover axles on my 2A FC with a 2B front
and a S3 Salisbury rear, as they were the weak links in the drive
train and run with FWH.It now drives lovely and has (hopefully) no
weak links in the drive train

254|246|2005-06-17 13:11:10|Wouter de Waal|Re: Hello from new member|Hi Paul & all
Firstly, the series rand-lovers have universal joints in the
front axles, not CVs... that's the problem. And it's not an
issue of how long they will last -- remember last time you
turned while in 4WD and the steering wheel jogged back and
forth? That's because of the UJs. Now imagine cornering at
80 km/h in permanent 4WD and getting that effect...
Ashcroft (I think) make an adaptor to fit a standard series
transfer case to the back of the newer gearboxen. But that
would be a standard transfer case, not a FC (helical) transfer
case. But that's basically what you will need.
And then you need to make sure that your gear ratios will
work with the 900s.

I once had the same problem with bleeding. On my FC, the brake cylinder
inlet was on the highest point. To get of the air, you could
a) slacken the front wheel cylinder and turn them, so that the bleeding
screw and pipe front the upper to the lower cylinder are at the highest
position ( if possible) or
b) lift the front of the car, so that the air can come out ( as stated
in the workshop manual).
As the brakes of the FC are not the best one, I would not drive without
any servo,

I may have a spare mechanical PTO suitable for the FC gearbox - I'll check

compare the FC on to a standard one and tell you what the differences
are. The location of the rear mainshaft bearing sure is different - it
shaft is longer on the FC/1-ton gearbox and the bear bearing is closer to
the rear of the gearbox. I'll get back to you with pictures and more info

It's been a bit of a roller-coaster ! When we got to the place we
bought it, we had a bit of a dig around and it didn't look terrible.
We knew it had rot, so weren't completely unprepared.. and besides,
I'd already decided I was having it. (Bad idea :-))
When I eventually got the thing stripped down and started banging away
at the chassis, I had a real 'downer' moment.. the rot was a lot
worse than even I had imagined. I had to walk away from it for a
week.. just couldn't see the big picture any more.
The following weekend... a couple of big sheets of steel, cutters and
a welder in hand.. I got to work, and managed to get myself back in
the swing. Now it's all systems go again... so hopefully there will
be a lot more updates :-)

Another question:

But the possibilities to get one, especially here in Germany are very

8000 - 10000 Euros, plus shipping and any import duties you may have
to pay. And of course they are right hand drive, so that might also be
a problem.
Do you have a copy of the original brochures?

Thanks for the files.
I'm in Randburg but I think they closed down years
ago. The guy went
on a world tour with his FC and I'm not sure where he
is now. You can
still pick up a second hand one here in South Africa.

Hi Hilton,
I have a copy of the brochures in the "Files"-folder.
Right hand drive wouldn't be the biggest problem. I
had a 88 RHD and, let's say, it was interesting to
drive it here in Germany. And an Overlander wouldn't
be a car for daily use.
10000 Euros plus all the other costs isn't cheap, but
for special things you have to pay special prices.
I was also thinking about flying to South Africa and,
if I found one I'd like to buy, drive it back home the
10000 miles trough Africa. That wouldn't be cheaper,
but more fun. But I think, my boss wouldn't be very
happy, if I apply for leave for two month...
Another alternative would be to collect everything I
can get (pictures, plans, etc.) about the Overlander
and start to build a camper-projekt using
"Overlander"-style. But it would take a long time to
finish this projekt.
Many possibilities and I don't know how to decide.
So I'll start to collect documents and maybe, I'll
find a car in South Africa or somewhere else.
Let's wait and see.
Best wishes

289|289|2006-04-07 12:03:23|Gunther Kanz|Parts catalogue / Overlander FC|Hi Andreas,
I live in South Africa for the last 30 years, but have never seen an Overlander FC, only the normal IIA / IIB with modified bodies, and not many of them. I bought a IIB with a clinic body, which I will change to a camper over time. I received an original brochure with the lay-out of the Overlander from a helpful person of the group, which I can send to you.
If you are really interested in the FC, I know somebody, who builds all kinds of Landys together with new and/or used parts and sells them then. At the moment, he has two FC for sale (so I am told). I can see him in about 2 or 3 weeks time and have a discussion with him.
By the way, where in Germany do you live? I grew up south of Ulm and spent lots of time near Kaufbeuren (Air Force) in Bavaria.
Give me a call, if I can be of assistance.
Cheers und viel Glück zu Deinem Projekt,

293|282|2006-04-12 19:14:50|uralist|Parts Catalogue|Hi all,
another suggestion for the files:
Everyone who needs the files should download the first tree parts.
Then let's say on April the 20th I'll delete them and post the next
ones (and a message so everyone knows). Wouter and Tim have free disk
space. Maybe they put the files at their webservers.
About copyright:
I think the number of existing FC's is to small that you can get rich
by selling this files. And, if we transfer the files only in this
group and use it as copies for work at our cars, I hope we won't get
problems.
But in the end this will be an illegal action.
So if you don't own an orginal Catalogue, don't download the files or
you would be a bad, bad, illegal person......;-)
Cheers
Andy
PS: I have also scaned the Instruction Manual for IIB (wait and
see).......

This is a quiet list, but I believe there are a few people
who know their Forward Controls.
Paul Oxley is on the right track with the width, but I believe
his camper is too high.
If you look at the pics on my page, I have the wide army body.
Beautiful piece of work (aliminium throughout) but too wide.
I plan on making something as wide as the front wheelarches and
as high as my 109 Stationwagon with roofrack and ammo boxes. That
proved to be pretty much the limit for travelling through
Mozambique. Pim with his 101 ambulance had great fun, he had to
stop to cut branches and ended up very tense thinking he was going
to break something.
That makes a pop-top essential, I think.

looks incredibly wide but when you actually measure it, it's only
about 8cm wider on each side than a standard 110 (across the

So is this really an issue? I think extra height is something that you
need to watch out for. (ferry crossing, bridges, overhanging trees
etc).

some fairly major reconstruction and there has been a bit of juggling

326|309|2006-08-13 01:55:20|Tim Burt|Re: Width|--- In
109fc@yahoogroups.com, Paul Scherek
The engine is from a P38a Range Rover. GEMS controlled, so loads of
power, not afraid of water and minimal maintenance to keep running.
It is mated to a ZF4 auto box from a RR Classic with an LT230 transfer
box from a LR 90. I've always been a fan of autos, and for a forward
control project it really does simplify a few things too !
Rear axle is a Disc-braked axle from a Range Rover converted to run on
leaf springs. This gives me some sane braking, a nice ratio diff for
the engine / box. It has pretty much the same track as the ENV axle
so stability is OK. I'm not too worried about the weight capacity,
since it is never going to be loaded to the original FC specs !
Front axle is from a Series 3 Stage 1 V8... so it has CV joints
rather than UJs. It's about the only direct bolt-on axle with leaf
springs and CV joints. The track is a little narrower, so it is
fitted with some machined spacers between the chrome ball and the axle
case. By a staggering co-incidence, these spacers make the over sizes
correct so I can use halfshafts from a coil sprung Land Rover ;-)
I've got a disc brake conversion kit for the front axle so I can stop
! (I knew all these things I've been collecting for years would come
in handy one day !!)
I have heavy duty half shafts for both axles, and I also have an ARB
locker for the back, along with a limited slip diff for the front...
this really is going to be an all-terrain camper
Now... I did agonise over all of this for some time... I've never
been one to butcher vehicles for the sake of it, and I did think long
and hard about using original specs / parts. I have a complete
gearbox here that came with the pile of chassis... but I don't really
know what condition it is in. I also have both front and rear ENV
axles... which both seem to be in good condition. Thing is... I am
going to be using this thing "properly" and I came to the conclusion
that availability of spares was an important factor, so using more
common components for the drivetrain seemed like a good idea.
I also justified it to myself a bit with the rationale that if I
didn't go down this route, I wouldn't be building the camper and the
vehicle would have rotted away to a small pile of oxide by now.
Restoration purists, you may now look at the screen again....
...and of course, all the bolts will line up properly when it is done,
and I'll be choosing the brand of polish very carefully :-) |

109fc@yahoogroups.com, "walkingcga"
should work well on the vehicle. I don't think I'd be wanting to run
a 12.5" wide tyre purely because of the amount of work you'll have to
do with the steering wheel ! Big wide tyres will tend to 'tramline' a
lot more and will be heavier to turn at low speeds.
It seems like a long way away, but when it's finished, mine will be
sitting on a set of Simex Jungle Trekkers :-) |

The project has now taken a new direction..... the camper body isn't
going to be built on the vehicle itself, but I've decided that I'm
going to build a 5th wheel camper instead :-)
The Forward Control is now destined to become a double-cab with a
hi-cap pickup body on the back, and there will be a matching goosneck
trailer with a 5th wheel coupling on the vehicle.
I don't think there is any particular logic to this decision... but
heck.. I've never been one for owning a "normal" vehicle :-)

same problem as towing a caravan - one can't risk heading down a track
unless you are certain that you can get out the other side. There are just
so many tracks where there are simply no places a large vehicle/trailer
combination can turn around.
It's not much fun backing a combination along 10 miles of winding mountain

Otherwise, sounds a great project! Please keep us all informed.

and not enough days in the week for all the projects...
Someone goes and offers you another Forward Control !
This one is chassis number 132, originally a 2.25 diesel... it
currently has a Perkins 5.8 Litre, 6 cylinder diesel engine in it !!
Well... never one to pass up an opportunity, it looks like I'll be
having a bit of a reshuffle this weekend...
I'll see if I can get a picture up of the new beast !

347|347|2007-01-23 08:43:21|gun@ebucksmail.com|Spares for a IIB.|Hi everybody,
I am finally continuing with the Forward Control IIB project. The engine to be installed is an imported Toyota 3CT, the gear box an overhauled Santana. At the moment I am looking for the following spares:
Main gear lever and linkages.
Gear box cross member.
Prop shafts front and back.
Spare wheel carrier.
Front grill with Land Rover logo.
I was offered these spares by a Johannesburg company, but at inflated prices (in my opinion), like R500 + VAT for the gear lever, R275 + VAT for the front grill etc.
Questions:
Where can I get these parts for a decent price?
Does anybody know of a wrecked Forward Control, which I could buy?
I have also an overhauled Chev 4.1 engine, which I do not need anymore. Anybody interested to buy?
Any help really appreciated, I live in South Africa. I kept an exact log re. costs incurred so far and contacts I know (spares, LR mechanics in SA etc.). Feel free to ask for a copy.
Kind regards,
Gunther Kanz.

The front springs from a 109 station wagon should be OK on there. You
have a couple of choices for the rates on there depending if the
vehicle is petrol or diesel, etc. Any decent Land Rover parts company
should be able to supply them for sensible money.

How did you get on with this ? I did have a thought, that maybe
parabolics might increase body roll a fair bit due to the height of
the FC.
It's well worth changing the bushes at the same time as the springs..
even on standard springs these can make a big difference to the
quality of the ride.

I own a FC IIB, bought more than 1 year ago in South Africa. She comes slowly
to

installed (Santana from Spain). Brakes, axels, lights all have been done. The
truck should be ready in about 1 - 2 months time. I live in South Africa (50 km
north of Durban), but are at the moment in Brisbane - Australia, visiting my
son and his family.
Any Rangie / Forward Control fan around in Brisbane?
Can anyone tell me, how to change my e-mail address withhout the password? Lost
it.
A photo of the FC in the early stages is attached. Can I be of any assistance?
Kind regards,

363|355|2007-12-06 23:31:39|Fred Murray|Re: New SIIA Forward Control Owner across the pond|Hi Leon,
Good hear from you.
I'm afraid I missed it - it was on Trademe. My son noticed the ad on Sunday and told me about it. I asked him to find out from the owner what the tyres were like (not interested if it was on 7.50s!) and registration status, and to get a time to inspect it. Tuesday evening I reminded him and went to look at the ad again to double check some details. The ad had been withdrawn. It was a 1963 IIa with an full metal canopy over the back, and 33,000 miles under its belt. It had been in dry storage for some time, but had all its fluids replaced and had been started. It's body looked faded but pretty straight, in fact almost amazingly straight. It had all its light lenses and they all had wonderful military-looking guards over them. It certainly wasn't showroom condition, but it was way better than any FC I've seen for years.
The ad had an asking price of $5k, and apparently it sold for $5,600 - it would have to be a real bargain at that price. I'm in North Canterbury, and it was in Christchurch.
Bit of a bummer really, but I'll keep an eye out for another one now that I've got interested. (it had the ordinary 4cylinder petrol motor)

365|355|2007-12-17 05:37:59|Fred Murray|Re: New SIIA Forward Control Owner across the pond|Hi Leon,
I want to acquire a preferably elderly Landy pretty soon - I'll flag away the idea of an FC for the time being - I actually need a usable one, nit that I'm denigrating the FCs. There's a nice 101 ambulance in Chch, but it's a helluva price and it is really pretty much in its ex-army state. I've always admired the looks of the S2a and b FCs - believe it or not, in the early 1970s one of my friends converted a 109 S2 into a FC, and a couple of years later, another one converted a S2b FC into a 109 (or perhaps it was a 110). The s2a on Trademe looked to have a pretty good history, and I haven't seen one for years that didn't look pretty thoroughly abused.
They made a lasting impression on everyone who ever saw one during their heyday!

I live in Austria/Vorarlberg and bought a 1966 6cylinder FWC last year.
Over winter i was collecting spares and energie to start the
restauration. now i have almost finished - but i m in need of a new
waterpump. as i have removed the fan propshaft and installed an
electric fan i wanted to change the fan pulley on my waterpump. i did
so also because the pulley from the other 6pot engines is easier to
remove. i went to a local machine shop to do the pressing - but there
they destoryed the impeller of the waterpump. i have got three spare
pumps here - but they all fit the later 6pot engines. mine is suffix b
and now i m searching this old waterpump. tried the local dealers,
german and swiss landrover clubs, the 6 pot forum and the serie 2
forum - no success even no answers. now i found this discussion group -
maybe here i find some help. i would need a new waterpump for the
suffix b 6pot, or a used one or defective one with good impeller. can
anybody help me - otherwise i have to quit the restauration and my fwc
project.
greetings from austria - gert
ps: hope my english is good enough

very practical and cheap alternative. They are quieter, use less engine

temperature constant, the electric pumps adjust their speed accordingly.
No thermostat needed.

I'm looking at the same project + a lot of other upgrades.
Try and have a look at this long thread on the subject:
Rebuild of a 2B Forward Control
http://forum.landrovernet.com/showthread.php?t=113785 Marc has chosen a 300tdi instead, after a lot of consideration. But
there are are a lot of good technically discussions in thread on
related problems during the rebuild.
It's a long thread, but it's quit entertaining to read :-)
The other day I came across a wee bit more extreme conversion, on a
Forward Control, called "Le Frog".
Here Simon is using a huge cummins 6B 5.9 litre straight-6 diesel
engine taken from a small DAF truck, is shoe-horned down in the
chassis. A kind of dragster-forward control :-) Great fun to read:
