1.	Figures supplied by the SAPS Crime Information and Analysis Centre are subject to change, since the SAPS database is an active system and is open to ongoing amendment.

Statistics for the period before 1994 are not used since the collection and collation of statistics by the former South African Police and the homeland police agencies varied in quality and therefore do not provide a full picture of crime in the country. Also, given that the majority of the country’s citizens had little trust in the police, the overall level of reporting would have been reduced, undermining the validity of data collected during the period.

3.	Figures from the Central Firearms Registry were extracted from a live production database and are therefore reflective of the situation on the particular date that they were drawn. Figures extracted from the system at other times will therefore differ from those used here.

4.	The use of the word rate, unless otherwise stated, refers to ratio per 100 000 of the population.
