• Set line length to less than 80 characters, 65 is a good number.
• Use plain text only. No MIME and/or HTML.
• Control characters are to be avoided. Use US-ASCII text chars only. Special fonts, formating and languages can not be used in news or list postings.
• Do not type everything in the same case, it is also a sign of a newby.
• CUT Superfluous and irrelevant text from a reply to a list server or news group. Quote only what you are replying to.
• Use plain language and avoid humour in international lists and groups
• Remain on topic in restricted groups and lists.
• Avoid flame wars and do not rise to the bait by replying to the group or list. Direct such replys directly to the person. They are best avoided.
• Keep signatures to less than 5 lines and don't include ascii art.

Some expressions you may see.

Newby - Someone who has just got a connection.
Flame war - Arguments mostly off topic and futile clashing of personalities that are conducted in the group or list instead of privately (off-line).
Flame bait - Comment designed to arouse flame wars
Troll - Incitement for flame bait or flame wars
Asbestos suit - Defense against flame war comments
List cop - Somebody, not the moderator who reminds others of these rules.
List god - The moderator because moderators have the ultimate power.
