The Media

When I was young and sometimes foolish I often noted letters to newspapers with an attitude of disdain. Wondering why such people bothered to vent their displeasure or commendation of something well done.

Having had the opportunity of adding many more years of experience and learning I somehow managed to put two and two together and approached something equalling four. It is true that with age comes enlightenment for some. Others never ever achieve this and remain the sheep of humanity. Muddling along with the mass accepting the status they believe they are comfortable with.

If this is you read no further because what follows is not for you. However if you can see that there is room for improvement or change in the status accepted by the silent comatose mass of humanity we call "the people". Then what follows will be of interest to you.

To give a general idea of the mode of operation of those dispensing news and views, the media, all that is required is to look at what makes them successful. Since no media organisation will achieve success by supplying to the masses what it does not want or welcome. Thus all such organisations carefully monitor the public acceptance of what they have produced. Journalists and writers alike note carefully what people say and do, how they appear to react to what has been presented.

This is a powerful tool in shaping the direction and content of the media operation. Because the media will not fly in the face of opposition or rejection. To do so would be both stupid and doomed to failure. No business plans to fail.

It is also a powerful tool to those who understand this mechanism and who can use it to their own advantage. To those that seek change in a direction that carries a large amount of public sentiment it is a god send, not to be lightly dismissed or ignored.

There are few who understand this simple principle of survival of the media and even less who know how to use it.

By far the majority, "the people" abound in all walks of life, stifling progress, new ideas and change. Change or progress makes them feel uncomfortable as they have no means to evaluate the merits of such change other than emotion. Their minds must be filled with emotion before they are motivated. These people are the audience of the media from whom the media seeks acceptance of what it presents. They control the direction of the media by their reaction to the media and thus unwittingly and unknowingly are in command of the media. Few of them have the urge to report directly to the media thus the media must conduct surveys, listen to conversation and rely on those few who do report.

This mechanism gives a great opportunity to those that would influence the media and thus public opinion by shifting the focus of the media. All that is required is to report to the media the idea or sentiment desired. There are limitations on what can be presented. There must exist some public feeling or emotion for what is being brought to their attention. The greater their feelings, even it they are latent, the easier it is to increase their awareness to a new or different concepts.

What you may ask has all this got to do with firearms owners. The answer is simple. Gun control has used this mechanism to create a public perception that guns are evil, cause crime, violence, murder, family deaths and suicide, calling for them to be removed. There is absolutely no reason in the world why the same mechanism can not be utilised to redirect or change this perception.
