This is a new list that I created a few weeks ago and we already have a few members who have signed up. I expect that the list will grow rapidly once the word gets out. My PC crashed right after I created the list and I have not been able to promote it yet.
I envision this list being a shooter supported list. I want everyone to feel free to post questions and responses.
Please tell your IHMSA shooting friends about the list. They can subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to IHMSA-subscribe@onelist.com

Roger:
I am from Blackville, South Carolina. I have been shooting IHMSA since 1995.
I shoot a XP-100 in 7mm-08 for Unlimited, BF in 7mm Elgin Gates for Production, T/C in 6.5TCU in Unlimited Standing. T/C in .357 for Standing and a Freedom Arms in .44 mag for Revolver class. I use a T/C in 10" .22lr Match Chamber for all Smallbore classes except revolver where I use a Ruger single six. I don't shoot much Field Pistol.
I usually travel to matches with my 11 year old son. It has been a great father/son experience shooting together. We go to most all the SC matches as well as the Regionials and Internationals.

Roger:
7-08: 36.0 gr Varget, Federal Gold Medal Match LR primer, 162 gr A-Max NM bullet (original if I can find them), Lake City 89 brass.
7 E. T. Gates: 21.3gr IMR 3031, Federal Gold Medal Match LR primer, 175 gr Speer Mag Tip, W-W IHMSA 375 SM cases if I can find them otherwise Win 30-30 cases.
.22LR: I usually shoot Federal bulk packed in the Ruger and Rem. Target in the T/C.
I have several .22's and each shoots best with a different type of ammo. I keep about 20 different types for testing and use what ever shoots best or if there is not much difference I use which ever is cheapest or most easily available. My choice (for the T/C) is financially driven, $3.68/100 beats $17.00/100 for Lapua-M which does shoot slightly tighter groups.
I always enjoy talking about shooting, sometimes I wonder if that is not the real reason I go to matches:<)
I laid out of shooting totally from 1985-1993, but I made a return. I am not as fast but I am just as good at long range/slow fire events like IHMSA or Benchrest.

Gentlemen, Steve Ware here in beautiful SW Oregon. Was pointed to this list by Richard Pickerington. Hope it becomes more active. A sillywet shooter for 15 years, now shooting at the Josephine County Sportsman Association, Grants Pass, OR. Hope to see several of you at the 2000 Internationals in Ft. Stockton. It should be a hoot.
I've used the calendar to give everyone the match dates for the year 2000 for the Josephine County Sportsman Association, Grants Pass, OR. I suggest everyone on this list do the same. It would make it easy for travelers to find matches. Steve
I just wanted to introduce myself....my name is Ike and I shoot IHMSA at Tri-City Gun Club in Norman, Okla. I shot IHMSA pretty heavy back in the mid 80's and early 90's then dropped out and just got back into shooting iron this past year. My two favorite guns and calipers thus far are a 14" barrel 7TCU Contender and a old style center grip XP100 in 7BR but I did get into a new 14" Contender barrel in 7-30 Waters last weekend and got my load worked up this week. I'm going to meet a buddy of mine at the range in about an hour to get sight settings.....we'll see if the Waters is going to be added to my list as favorites for steel. :-)

Hi Ike, Glad to see your getting back to shooting ! Your story is kinda like mine, I guess one can burn out if you do too much of a good thing. On the bright side, I'm going shooting steel next weekend. First time in 2 1/2 years !! One of the clubs here in Michigan is having a reunion shoot for all the old farts ( like me ) that haven't shot a match in a while. Ten bucks and shoot as many classes as you can between 8:30 and 6:30. No trophy's or entry credit. A novel way to bring in some business! Gee, I hope I don't forget to adjust my sights!! Chris

Now thats a good idea. i havent shot a match in 12 years, the interest never got lost but time and kids took over, also lost a good bunch of shooting buddies they started to take this game to serious, not me i was always in it for the fun of shooting and helping the new shooters out buy spotting for them and just helping. I will never forget my first match in april of 1983 sunday just didnt come fast enough after that.

For those of you who have not met Steve Riddle, he is the RII Director and Match Director at Little River Gun Club in Lincolnton GA. He has done a good job in both positions.
I originally started shooting IHMSA at LRGC and have known Steve Riddle for several years. We have shot together at many SC & GA matches as well as many Regionals & Internationals.
Here in South Carolina, IHMSA has grown by 200% in the past 2 years. I no longer have to drive 3 hours to the nearest match! Although many people have been involved in the growth, it would not have happened without Steve Riddle's leadership.

FYI,
This was just posted over on Shooter's IHMSA forum. If anybody is interested in one of these barrels it would be a good idea to contact Ed of Ed's Contenders. See contact info at the bottom.
It was mentioned to Ed this last weekend about the 25-20 getting approved for IHMSA Field Pistol and as everyone knows there aren't any factory TC barrels chambered in that caliber. Ed wants to get a feel for how many shooters actually want a 25-20 barrel. The deal is that he can special order from TC, barrels chambered for the 25-20 but he must order a minimum of 50 barrels at a time and naturally if he can't sell somewhere close to that amount he doesn't want to get stuck with them for a long period of time before they sell. He can't mix and match a special order from TC, they must all be the same finish, length and chambering. The barrels will all be ten inches, blue, with iron sights front and rear. They will also be marked on the barrel Thompson Center Arms not Fox Ridge and after he orders them it may very well be 60 to 90 days before he actually has them in his inventory. The cost of the barrels will be in line with a new current production TC Contender ten inch barrel of a given caliber as opposed to the price of a Fox Ridge custom shop barrel. What Ed needs is some sort of "FIRM" count of how many of you and your fellow shooters will actually purchase one of the barrels.
To contact Ed's Contenders:
Between 8 AM and 2 PM M-Th
Phone: 405-879-0879
Between 6 and 10 PM M-F

Dave,
I'm the fella that made the post on the IHMSA board for Ed, he does not want to be contacted at this time about the barrels because he doesn't have them in hand yet nor has he determined that there is enough interest to warrant purchasing fifty barrels. (TC's minimum on a special prder) If you have an interest in a 25-20 please just let it be known on the IHMSA board at www.shooterstalk.com.

Happy New Year. Mine didn't start out worth a damn, dad passed away on the 30th.
You friend is about right on the price of the XP, but high on the XL. He may have to come down to a grand or less. I picked one up from Jim Rock at the Internatioanls with three bbls, including two brand new bbls, and including shipping was less than $1200.00

For those of you who missed the Internationals in Ft. Stockton TX, I have posted about 300 photos so far along with the final scores. There will be more added over the next couple weeks as I catch up and other participants get home and send in their material. A list of the new pages is at http://www.ihmsa.org/daily.html
IHMSA@onelist.com now IHMSA@yahoogroups.com started out as an unofficial IHMSA chat group where we could carry on fireside chats about silhouette shooting. That original purpose has not changed except it is now an official IHMSA group. What this means to you is that we will have more members and more messages. This change was caused by two facts:
1)Yahoo threatened to close the group because they were not getting enough traffic to pay the cost of providing the service.
2)Your list moderator is now the IHMSA Web Team Coordinator.
For the past six months I have been very quiet as IHMSA has moved servers and the IHMSA Web Team made changes to the IHMSA website. In the future I will be posting enough official IHMSA notices to keep this list alive, and http://IHMSA.org will carry a link to this e-mail list.
Hello I have been lurking on this group for a while as it seems have most of the rest of you. I was hoping to learn about this sport from the discussions, but alas no. I live in France and have bought a 7.5" Ruger Blackhawk in 45Colt, I have not got it yet as I await the paperwork, hopefully less than a fortnight. The gun was the right price and I was very interested in reloading with 300gn+ bullets having read on other groups about loads to about 44mag power. I have a question, what do you people who actually do it think of using this gun for silhouette shooting in field category. I also wondered if you use the same loads for all targets or do you use heavier for the rams. I await your replies
Yours Andrew Marsh PS I hope this stimulates a little discussion on silhouette shooting.
I guess most of us on this list would rather spend our time at the range than in front of a computer. Once the sun gets up and dries things out that is where I am heading. I need to check sight settings before this weekends Region 2 Championship in Lincolnton GA USA
The Ruger should work just fine for silhouettes. The first silhouette gun I bought was a 7 1/2" Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag any I had lots of fun with it. Although most people use a single shot pistol in Field Pistol there is nothing wrong with using a revolver and you can shoot the revolver in all the Field Pistol & Big Bore classes. Shooting one gun over and over helps you learn more about how it shoots. I often wonder if I would not have been better off sticking to one gun, especially when I am searching for sight settings for a gun I have not shot for a couple months!
You might find that the 45 Long Colt is more gun than you really need for Field Pistol as the targets will fall when hit by about anything greater than a .22 lr but you can still shoot it and have a lot of fun. 45 Long Colt is more appropriate as a Big Bore gun. Cartridges like the .22 hornet and 32/20 are most commonly used by the top shooters in Field Pistol but you see everything from .22lr to .44 mag revolvers being used by local match winners. Shoot the 45 Long Colt in Field Pistol with a light load and then try it in Big Bore..
For my 44 mag. revolver, I load fairly hot (1400 fps) for the Big Bore turkeys and rams, for anything 100 meters or less I often load down to around 1100 fps to save wear & tear on my body. When I load reduced loads I still use the same 240gr cast bullet that I use for full power loads, I just change powder and the brand of case so I can tell them apart. I think you will find that you can develop a good light load for Field Pistol and also use it for Big Bore chickens & pigs and then load up for the longer shots or use separate loads for Field Pistol & Big Bore. I don't think you will need to change loads in Field Pistol.
I tried using 300+gr bullets and they did well on paper but I did not have enough sight elevation to get out to 200 meters. The drop of a 300 gr bullet is roughly 50% greater than a 240 gr at 200 meters at maximum loads. The heavy bullets should make a good hunting load but did not work for me for silhouettes. I have since changed revolvers and still have some 300 gr bullets that I may try again some day.
You can get a lot of performance out of the .45 Long Colt in modern firearms. The Sierra manual lists loads to 1250 fps with a 240 gr bullet which gives 833 ft lbs of energy compared to 1044 ft lbs for a 240 gr .44 mag. The 45 Long Colt will provide all the performance you need for silhouettes.
Are you shooting at an IHMSA club or at another match? I know there are some rule differences between the IHMSA rules and some of the other sanctioning bodies, but I am not familiar with the details. IHMSA rules are posted on the website at http://IHMSA.org If you are shooting under other rule please post the address of their website. .
The attachments were apparently added by Yahoo and only to those list members who elect to receive html messages. Friends:
The IHMSA Region 2 Big Bore Championships website has been updated. You can sign up, get maps & directions and hotel information. Check it out at http://www.IHMSA.org/R2/
The match is May 24-27th (Memorial Day Weekend) at Black Creek Gun Club in Patrick SC. The host club has expanded the range by adding new rails and firing line cover and totally redone the berms to reduce shadows. The results of their efforts are unbelievable, it should be a great match. Capacity is 243 Big Bore and 81 half size entries.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Carl Yates IHMSA SC State Director cyates@... (803)259-3415 after 5 PM Eastern time.

38|38|2002-05-14 21:07:34|cyates@barnwellsc.com|Region 2 Big Bore Championships May 24-27th Patrick SC|
Friends:
This is the last call for reserved shooting times for the IHMSA Region 2 Big Bore Championships, advance registration closes on May 20th. View details and sign up on line at http://IHMSA.org/r2 You may still register at the door during the match.
The line is filling up fast but there are plenty of good shooting times left if you are flexible. It is still possible to shoot all 8 Big Bore & Half Size guns or shoot the 5 gun agg. with your spotter.
Although the deadline for ordering t-shirts has past, if you want one, list it on the registration form and I will try to fill your order. A few extra Large, X-Large and XX-Large were ordered.
The range looks great, the menu looks fattening and the crowd is great and still growing. I signed up 27 more entries on Sunday raising the total to 176 entries. View the schedule from the link above to see when your friends are shooting!
Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have questions about your registration. I look forward to seeing you there.
There will be a one-hour live radio broadcast on Saturday, August 17, from the IHMSA Internationals at the TUSCO Rifle Club. This broadcast will be done by Trevor Bull and Tom Yackley, hosts of the radio show Range & Field.
This radio show will be broadcast on WBIG 1280 AM out of Aurora, IL and the WBIG web site at http://www.wbig1280.com The broadcast will be from 8:00 a.m. through 9:00 a.m. EDT. This is a live broadcast only and will not be archived on the web.
Suggest you visit the WBIG web site prior to the broadcast, enable your Microsoft Media Player, and set WBIG up as one of your favorite stations before the broadcast. This way, you will be able to easily connect the day of the broadcast.
If you cannot attend the match this will be a great way to tune in and find out what's happening!
(Trevor & Tom broadcast their show every Saturday from 7:00 AM until 8 AM Central Time Zone. Their show is a call in type show and focuses on all the fun aspects of shooting. You may want to listen to them every weekend through the WBIG web site.) Steve
Anybody know where i can get ElDorado parts? Last know address is Hauppauge NY but they moved but i cant remember where. Roger

You can access a list of scheduled matches at http://ihmsa.org/carl/match.rtf , the list is updated monthly and shows the next 3 months scheduled matches.
Matches are usually scheduled with HQ at the first of the year so not all winter matches are listed yet.
There is noting listed yet for Illinois but as things warm up there will probably be some listings. Bookmark the address and check back in March and May matches will be added.

This list is not affilated with IHMSA Inc. and is open to all interested Silhouette shooters, regaurdless of the sanctioning body under which they shoot. It is all about knocking down steel! If you post a question about rules please state which rules you are refering to.

Sorry, there are none. However, it is relatively easy to start a club if you know of an available range. Also, there are matches held in surrounding states. E-mail me your name/address & phone #. I will be in touch. Steve

64|64|2004-01-21 07:17:04|frdrngr01|New to the group w/ a Q|
I have shot a few handguns in my life and a .44 would be at the edge of my limit unless I could re-load myself and load em a little light. I shot a .41 a few weeks ago and I AM IN LOVE!! My question is if I wanted to get into silhouette shooting would a .41 be enough? I ask because I am really just starting to read about IHMSA and the rules so I am still a little sketchy.
|
65|64|2004-01-22 09:09:12|Roger Hauck|Re: New to the group w/ a Q|
The .41 works its just not very popular because of bullet selection, unless you cast your own bullets, what brand of gun are you thinking of getting?

66|64|2004-01-23 09:14:31|ihmsaeditor|Re: New to the group w/ a Q|
IMHO, the .41 magnum is the absolute finest straight walled pistol chambering ever developed for this game. Why? It's Momma Bear, Pappa Bear & Baby Bear. The .357 is not 100% on rams unless fired in a Freedom Arms or T/C. (Baby Bear) The .44 is more recoil and punishment than you need. (Poppa Bear) But, Momma Bear is just right. I know at least 6 shooters that have converted to the .41 mag in the last 18 months.
Bullet selection is not that big of a problem. Sierra still makes the 210 grain. Leadhead (http://www.proshootpro.com) sells a 270 grain cast, gas checked and a 230 grain, Keith-style plain based bullet.
I personally use the 270 grainer with 16 grains of VV N-110 and a Federal 155 primer & Starline brass. A friend of mine in OH uses the same components except powder. He uses 16 grains of IMR-4227. My load runs the bullet at 1370 with a Standard Deviation of 2. My friend's load runs around 1075. He shot the first Revolver 40 in OH with that load a few years ago. Two friends of mine here in OR bought a 220 grain mold and are using 15 grains of VV N-110.
I am playing with the Leadhead 230 grainer in my 6 1/2" S&W .41 for FP & BB Standing. I'm probably going to use either 16 grains of VV N- 110 or 15 grains of Alliant 2400 with that. I'm a really crummy Standing shooter, but to date, no ram hit has refused to fall to this bullet regardless of load used. (Of course, no ram wins when it comes to the 270 grain bullet!)
I know no one that is using a .41 that is disappointed or would switch back to either the .357 or .44.
(But, I do wish Sierra would bring back their 220 grain silhouette bullet. It was a great one.)
Hope this helps in your decision process.
Steve

Richard,
The real questions are (1) are they accurate enough in your gun and, (2) can you shoot your gun accurately enough if the load does its job. The Hornet is the #1 choice for Field Pistol so it's up to the task. The rest is up to you.
FWIW, I'm considering using .22WMR for Field Pistol if I can a decent barrel at a good price. It's really my second choice, the Hornet being the first choice. I'm just not sure I want to reload for another caliber.

I am looking for information on shooting glasses and any attachments that can aid in shooting pistol silhouette. I have seen different items used by those at matches including some using Champion style glasses. Just looking for some info on what others are using.
Get something comfortable. When you try them get into your normal IHMSA shooting position, as not all glasses will let you shoot comfortably from the Creedmore position, if that's your preference. And look for glasses that the manufacturer certifies as ANSI 87.1 for high-impact resistance. There are a lot of stylish "shooting glasses" out there that won't stand up to impact. I've gotten a lot of splatter from steel targets in other sports.

I am a .41 Mag lover and have been for a while. I want to pick up a hobby since I retire soon from the Navy and IHMSA seems quite interesting. I would like to get some opinions on which firearm maufacturer to start with. BUT I need to keep the price for the gun AND a VERY BASIC reload setup under $12-1400 or so. Freedom Arms would be my first choice but is a bit cost prohibitive. Taurus is, I have heard, not very high on the quality scale. I really like the feel of Smith and Wesson. Ruger, never shot one. Winning it all is not my goal. Well not right away anyhow.

I would pick up a T/C and get a few barrels so you can shoot in different categories. Barrels are cheap used and once you have the frame you can do just about anything in IHMSA with it.

I have used revolvers from Ruger, Smith & Wesson and Freedom Arms for IHMSA. The FA shoots the tightest group. I am going to be buying a new revolver in the spring and unless I buy a used one, I will almost certianly buy another Ruger. I love the FA's but they offer a small advantage for a large price difference. I would get more advantage for the cost, if I spend the money on practice ammo. It might be different if I were an International class shooter consistantly shooting 79 out of 80, but I am not.

Since I am not real familiar with T/C these may sound like silly questions but... What can I expect to pay for a T/C? Does caliber affect cost? Is there a particular caliber I should look for to go along with a custom barrel? Has anyone ordered a barrel from Fox Ridge Outfitters? If so, what is your opinion? If I order a .44 Mag barrel ported, how much can I expect it to reduce recoil? Moly coat or not? Lap or not?

I think I would seriously check the rules about ported barrels as they are not allowed in the other code (IMSSU), so I think there is a good chance the same holds true for IHMSA. Best Wishes Andrew mts4life2000 wrote:

What I read/found was.. 2. B) Applied friction materials or rubberizing on any part of the handgun. I have what appears to be a pistol made for long range IHMSA shooting. It is a ULA Model 20 with fiberglass right hand thumb hole stock and left hand bolt in .308 caliber with about a 16" barrel. I would like to find out any information available about this pistol and the company that produced it. I have not been able to locate anything with Web searches. Please respond with direct e-mail. Thanks.
It's a pretty straight forward disassembly. I don't think you're going to find a Heathkit like step-by-step. The exploded parts diagram is available at:
It might also help you locate things about the 2240 if you search for "crosman" rather than "crossman". Picky, picky, I know, but it helps. I made the same mistake, uh, er typo, also.
Thanks for all the info Alf. I don't have any problems with my regular firearms but this will be my 1st venture with the gas driven version and I would feel more comfortable seeing what little "itty-bitty" springs etc might surprise me

There are some small parts, but not like some bb guns where the springs and other small parts fly out when you take it apart. Really, just the barrel, breech and then the grips and the trigger assembly. Watch for the little piece that connects the valve with the barrel. Of course, make sure you remove the CO2 cylinder first.
Have fun. I put a 10" 2250 barrel on mine along with a muzzle brake, a steel, left-handed breech and a single stage trigger. Topped it with high Millet rings and a Millet red-dot. So that's about $200 worth of parts on a forty dollar gun.

Are there any groups active in NW Ark or SW Mo? I am specifically looking for airgun discipline. Bob D
I shoot handgun silhouettes in South Africa. My licences came through after a really long wait, so now I have no excuse and I have to start practicing.

What's a 7mm Elgin Gates? I have a 7mm SuperMag BF -- this is supposed to be the 357 Super Mag necked down, but I use 357 Maximum brass which gives a really short neck.
The 7mm Elgin Gates is also known as 7x375SuperMag, or is a very slight variation thereof. Although I have shot it for years, I have never seen any published drawings or load data. It is a .375SM or 30-30 case trimed and necked to 7mm.
Your 7x357SuperMag is based on a .357 SM or Max case.
Both are very short necked rimmed cases of roughly 1.6 inch length. They are both designed for heavy bullets seated to a very long OAL.
The 7x357SuperMag is almost identical to the 7TCU in case capacity. The 7x375 SuperMag has something like a 15-20% larger case capacity.
The parent SuperMag cases are sometimes listed as higher pressure ratings than the alternate 30-30 and .357 Rem Max cases but the short neck is common in the cartridge design. A quick measurement of the chamber of a 7x357SM T/C barrel shows 1.7” length for the case during firing, so the trim length must be less and does not allow for much neck.
Both make excelent silhouette cartridges but never really caught on. They are tricky to reload for and brass is not readily available.
Once you get started, you should really enjoy shooting the BF 7x357SuperMag.

It shoots well though.

This list is not affilated with IHMSA Inc. and is open to all interested Silhouette shooters, regaurdless of the sanctioning body under which they shoot. It is all about knocking down steel! If you post a question about rules please state which rules you are refering to.
Welcome to IHMSA. Unfortunately, I haven't seen many messages on this group since March! One gun club use to post a match notice every month, but I haven't even seen that lately. Even worse is I haven't shot in a match in over 10 years. Too busy and lack of availability of ranges to practice.
When I shot, I used 357Max in a 10" TC for Production and Standing. I've never heard of the 7mm EG so I can't be much help. Probably on the web somewhere.
Hope you find a good group to shoot with down there. Enjoy the sport.

I was directed to join this group after I found the link from Dennis Quackenbush...I am trying to work on my 22 and 2550 and I am a newbie to this platform. I would greatly appreciate the link he talks about somewhere within this group. Thank you so much.

Boy, Joe, it's been a long time since anybody posted to this group. I haven't kept up myself with air guns or IHMSA for that matter. Here are some links I had
