388|386|2004-03-01 19:14:04|Tarquin|Estimates on value|Hi all
I was hoping some of you could shed some light (2c worth) on possible
value of some firearms, these are out of a deceased estate and the widow
would like to get rid of them (I am interested in a couple of them)
1. Taurus .38sp 4" barrel, it seems in good condition it indexes ok and the
blueing is in very good condition it was licenced in 1994 so I presume its
about that old
2. Baby Browning (6.35mm) pretty old, surface finish so-so condition
mechanically sound, no rust problems
3. Old Gecado underlever air rifle needs new spring etc
4. Old Gecado model 1, probably suitable for teaching a small kid too shoot,
rather bad condition
5. Mauser .22lr also licenced in 1994 excellent condition with Tasco 4x32
scope
6. Safe 4 rifle single door (Brand "phoenix safes")
Please note these items are not for sale yet, I just want to get a rough
estimate of their value, as soon as I know what is going to happen (Family
bickering incl) and any items are actually for sale I will place such a
posting.
Thanks keep well
Tarquin

.22lr cal Astra pistol
.25 cal Astra pistol
ALL offers above R100 will be considdered, as she does not really care
about the money. I personally have not test fired them, but have
examined them, and they seemn to be functioning correctly. They were
last fired about 10years ago. Both are still in the original packaging
in which they were bought, and have the two original mags. I do not
know how old these pistols are. Reason for selling is that she does not
want to have them on her name anymore, and has moved to a retirement
village.
Interested parties can Email me with offers. I will pass these offers
on to the lady conserned.

409|409|2004-05-24 19:19:50|Geoffrey Sothern|CZ pistols and Sako .308|Hi all,
These items are for sale on behalf of friends and acquaintances.
CZ75, late model but NOT the "B". Very good nick with pair of aftermarket wooden grips. R2800
CZ83. very good condition. R2000.
Both these pistols are the "used by little old lady" syndrome. Seldom fired, seldom carried. That is the reason for "very good condition" etc etc.
Sako .308 comes with a Hakko 3-9x40 scope. Illuminated reticule, if I recall but will confirm for those that are interested. This rifle is what I call a Mannlicher type stock, although those in the know will undoubtedly correct me. It has a full stock, to the end of the barrel. Also, very good condition with honest wear.

420|420|2004-08-16 09:56:59|Evan Summerson|Sauer|HI Guys,
I need some input / information.
A friend of mine has been offered the following:
Sauer (spelling) 90 in 30-06.
Full stock
Schmidt & Bender Scope (4/6x40 it seems)
Crocodile leather bag etc.
I believe that it hasn't been fired, or possibly a few times.
Now the big question: What would be a fair price for a gun like this?
Thanks in advance
Evan

One of the guys at work has fallen victim to the 'financial disarmament' factor of the FCA (as I predicted ! )
Dewald Gouws wants to sell the .38 S&W rewolwer featured in the attached pix.
Gun, plus 100-odd rounds ammo and holster for best offer.
Rollie was SAP-issue, which he purchased from his 'swaer' some years ago. Apparently no marks other than S&W's markings. Either reblued or original condition, does not seem to have had extensive use judging by condition of bluing. I doubt Dewald put more than 50 rounds thru it in the last 10 years.

I have used a 'no name brand' 10 shot magazine to shoot some hundreds of

complaint is the length of metal hanging out below the stock.
Which brings me to my next point: Does anyone know where I can obtain a

In such a hypothetical case the answer is simple, he doesn't.
There is no way to legally sell it and of course merely having it
is worth 15 years in jail these days. Not to mention the criminal
offence of anyone having knowledge of such an illegal firearm and
failing to report it to the SAPS (as for instance if this was not
a hypothetical case and all the readers of this message thought
it might be true) which is worth another 15 years in jail for all
of those people.
Anyone who has an illegal firearm could/should make use of the

452|452|2005-01-31 07:12:38|crimefreeza|National Organisation - New|If this message is sent to an organisation or somebody with an email
list of interested people please forward it to you members or
friends. We need volunteers from all over SA and just because you
in Poffadder or Uppington does not mean you are excluded. Both town
and regional representation is needed to reach the widest possible
number of people.
--------------------------------------------------------------
One of the most exciting opportunities has come our way and for
those who have long complained of a lack of a pro-active firearm
owners organisation this is your chance to put your effort where
your mouth was.
If you are all talk and no action, you don't really care if your
firearms are confiscated or just apathetic read no further.
To make this organisation work we that is the steering committee
need volunteers to promote the organisation and canvas members with
a view to as soon as possible holding elections to elect working
committees to represent the organisation and to continue the work of
the organisation in as many regions or towns as possible.
What the the members and organisation get is a fully functional
office with staff, phones, PC equipment, office equipment, a data
base of names and addresses, a website, limited funds, bank
account... and a well recognised name.
However all that is not just going to be handed over, we have to
show that we are worthy and can take this organisation to the top
making it the strongest national organisation in SA. Only the names
of sufficient volunteers willing to do the initial work will show
our good intentions.
The organisation will represent firearm owners to the fullest
without hesitation.
The organisation will fight and continue to fight unrealistic
and repressive legislation that removes rights from firearm
owners.
The organisation having sufficient funds will challenge any
legislation in court including the constitutional court
The organisation will promote firearms ownership in the media
and counter the propaganda of gun control.
The organisation having sufficient funds will facilitate
research on firearm related matters.
The organisation will attend where possible all meetings that
will directly influence firearm ownership
The organisation will constantly lobby government for improved
legislation and not stop until realistic firearm legislation is in
place.
The organisation will keep in close contact with members by
written report and news as well as a email newsletter. Members can
receive help and advice as well a guides to legislation compliance.
The organisation will actively seek partners in challenging
legislation and public perceptions.
There is only one paid official position and that is the CEO. Alex
Holmes has indicated his willingness to accept this position but no
other terms have been negotiated.
What will a volunteer/s be expected to do. Increase membership in
that area. Canvass local firearm dealers, local shorts shooting
clubs and other venues for members and make sure they have
sufficient membership forms. Facilitate the first meeting of
members of that area to elect a committee. A volunteer must have
email to keep in contact and report back. Any volunteer can have a
place on the steering committee and be involved with the initial
negotiations, drafting of a constitution and make suggestions on how
the organisation should be run.
The organisation needs you if it is ever to get going. This is not
the time to even think somebody else can or will do it because they
won't. If you want an organisation like this then make the effort
and volunteer by emailing your details as soon as possible. This
entire offer has a very limited time limit and will never be
repeated so please fill in your details ASAP.
Need more information email me directly.
*************************************************************** I
would appreciate if those who have already volunteered would again
fill in the details so I don't have to email you to find out. My

The following firearms are up for sale on behalf of Eric Rohlandt's family.
The firearms are all off Eric's Licences and are currently listed as stock at David Lok's Gun Connection in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg.
We understand that the current licencing crisis has depressed the market somewhat but please remember that all of these firearms are in excellent condition. David will hold the firearms for as long as it takes to get your licence.
Typically when one purchases a firearms, you pay the shop and apply for a licence, if the licence is refused, you get your money back and the shop resells the firearm. I would ask you to consider the following with these firearms, Pay for the firearm and allow David to pay the money through to Eric's family. If your license is refused or you no longer want the firearm for whatever reason, David will sell the firearm on, on your behalf.

elses care as I am not resident in South Africa at the moment.
I was a keen target shooter and my late husband the same as well as a
hunter. His estate left all his fire arms to his 3 sons, who are
under age to take a license, so therefore I had them licensed in my
name.
So in a way I feel bad to sell them as it is part of their
inheritance and a legacy from their Dad, but I have been advised to
either sell them all or hand them in at a police station, the latter
of which I have been warned against, as it seems the weapons get
stolen or sold at some police stations, without them ever being
dereistered from the licensed owner who hands them in.
Can anyone here advise?
WEAPONS ARE:-
1 Walter ppk 9mm short
1 Falke wind pellet gun " which I have been told does not
need/require a license, but at present is licensed.
1 Mauser 7.62 Rifle "this is a collectors item"
1 9mm Beretta parabellum long
1 Musgrave 243 rifle
1 Musgrave 30-06 rifle
1 Mossberg 12 BR shotgun
1 Boito 12 BR shotgun "I think one of the shotguns are pump action"
The weapons are all in very good condition and have been kept in a
safe since the passing of my late husband in 1993.
Thanking all in advance on this list for any help.

464|464|2005-11-14 09:41:41|Richard Boothroyd|Phone costs|Guys, I just got a phone bill for over R700. I suppose that's normal for some people but it's untenable for me. Wish to hell we could have some competition to Telkom. Of that, R220 was calling cell phones from my land line. Of the R700 total, just over R100 could be identified as business related. Financially, I live permanently on the edge. I'm not complaining about it, but wastage of any sort reduces what I can put into the firearm fight. This is just to say that I won't be calling cell numbers except for work and firearm related matters that can't be handled any other way. Anyone who wants me to return calls, please give me the option of land line or e mail. If it's urgent enough for a cell call, please say so.

I have a debit order, but the month before last I was over the limit by
R9,41. I went to Pick 'n Pray to pay the balance. I did not look at the
receipt. Next month I found that I had underpaid by 1c (PnP don't handle
cents). The interest charged for being 1c in arrears for one month was 15c.
Accounting folks will see that the annual % interest charged would make a
loan shark verrrrrrry happy.
This month I have underpaid by 94c. Wonder what interest I will be charged!!

One is a cut away, fully mechanically functional but obviously cannot be fired. No licence required. Not sure of the exact factory of origin but it has East German MPiK furniture and it is an AKM (stamped receiver) , was originally 7,62x39. R5000
The other is somewhat special, also 7,62x39, it is an export version of the AK 100/102/103 series (black furniture, new style folding stock, integral side mount etc). It was a personal gift from Kalashnikov himself and has his autograph engraved into the stock. By export version I mean they had to do a couple of minor mods to export it on a civilian permit instead of getting a "weapon of war" export permit from Russia. The mods are basically, a semi auto sear fitted, simplified muzzle break and the markings on the rear sight are different. Still new in the box, never been fired or licensed. It is one of 4 rifles he presented to his hosts here after visiting SA. Not sure what the value really is but will listen to offers from about R20,000

485|481|2007-09-25 16:01:45|Peter Moss|LUGER|Dick, Hilton
Essentially the value of any socalled collectable has a number
of variables attached, not least of all is finding a willing
buyer.
"Lugers" PO8's were made by a number of companies for various
contracts, markings and use. Some were made in large batches
others not. In total some 2 million were made. So they are not
exactly uncommon.
From the memory the most common LPO8 is the 1917 DWM ~137,000.
Look at the toggle.
How much is it worth? Huh! how long is piece of string?
What condition from mint = unfired, unused and in exact original
condition to reworked reblued made from random parts, down to a
rusted piece of scrap. Original condition is unmarked,
unscratched, 100% original finish, no wear, no stains, no pits,
no barrel wear - nothing but fired other than proof rounds and
seen very little use.
The percent blue is usually given. ie good some holster wear
finish 95%. Left scale dented
Issued -
The value will depend on condition, matching numbers on all
major parts and matching magazines and the condition of each.
It is rare to find matching std magazines but it will not
increase the value by that much.
Holster and wooden stock condition + tools include std mag
loading tool and cleaning rod.
Std mag pouch, holds two
Sight adjust tool.
Not issued with firearm
Snail drum magazine - fairly rare, may be worth more than the
gun who knows. Condition will determine exact value. Number
will not match, not issued with firearm.
Snail drum mag loading tool only one issued per box - rare.
and if you ever try to load one of these mags to full capacity
you will really need one. Winding the spring back helps but...
Snail drum canvass bag/pouch - yeah I want one - very rare.
Without more information or examination nobody on this earth can
give a decently close value.
You can look at Classic arms old sales and prices which may
help. It may also help to split issued from not issued stuff
depending on demand for snail drums.
As Wouter said it is only worth what a collector is willing to
pay. The more unique, the more complete, the more original
condition will determine that.

486|481|2007-09-30 13:40:41|Richard Boothroyd|Re: LUGER|Hi Hilton,
I have two Holt's catalogues I got because of routing a few guns to Holt's
via Suburban Guns in Cape Town. They would otherwise have been sacrificed
to SAPS and probably destroyed. The owners all get a catalogue from Holts
and two of them gave them to me.
One is for the auction of June 2004, the other March 2006. Only the latter
has a Luger and only one. It is an artillery model. The description reads
DWM 9mm PO8 1914 Military Pattern Artillery Luger self loading pistol,
serial No 7902 dated 1917, 8 inch barrel, some original blued finish,
magazine with wooden base ( some wear and patches of surface corrosion
to metal parts, one grip retaining screw missing ) with stock-board with
leather holster ( flap an old replacement ).
Judging from the ( small ) photo the gun seems to be in respectable if less
than perfect condition. Some slight pitting is visible on the barrel and
bright spots are visible where the bluing is worn off. But it looks quite
decent otherwise. The flap holster looks well used but complete and intact,
no damage. It fetched 730 pounds sterling. That would be about R 10 000.
Although Lugers are not rare, even artillery models, it is a little
surprising that only one appears in this catalogue compared with eight
broomhandle mausers.
Judging from the C96 Mausers, there is a big variation in price. The two
factors seem, not surprisingly, to be condition and rarity. Seven of the
eight sold. The eighth had the most blue wear and pitting. I suspect the
best offer was below reserve. The seven others varied from 360 to 1800
pounds. The 360 pound example has some pitting and a lot of blue wear.
Three of them sold for 420, 850 and 1600 pounds despite being of similar
condition. The 1600 example was made for and sold by Westley Richards, so
maybe it is rare.
An apparently mint example fetched 1100, while another good but not quite as
good fetched 1300. The latter had both the wood holster/stock and leather
holster so maybe that's what made it more valuable.
The one that fetched 1800 pounds was good but had some blue wear. What made
it worth so much was that it is a Bolo model with four inch barrel.
The 730 got for the Artillery Luger puts it pretty much in the same bracket
as the Mausers given it's condition. On that basis, a mint or near mint
example might fetch upwards of 1000 pounds. This is a limited "survey" but
I hope it gives you some idea. I suggest you send some good pics to Claude
at Suburban Guns for an opinion. As far as I can tell, in the wake of the
FCA, good examples fetch a better price in the UK where collecting seems to
be thriving despite the otherwise anti gun attitude in the UK.
Regards
Dick

494|494|2008-03-09 21:00:06|Richard Boothroyd|Used Equipment|I might, and I stress might, be getting involved in the purchase and sale of used equipment. As dealers become fewer and thus thinly spread, equipment of all sorts will become harder to find for two reasons. First, fewer dealers. Second, smaller market will mean that the few remaining dealers will carry less stock. It will also mean more use of mail order. At this stage I am not doing it for my own profit, I'm trying to assist a struggling dealer who is one of the good guys well worth supporting. He has for years carried not only used firearms but also loading equipment and other stuff. Internet will be a vital tool, but he has not yet set it up. Until he can, I'm doing it for him. I plan to offer a catalogue of items as a Word attachment for those who want it, and to announce it's availablity on these three forums say once a week to keep it on the radar screen. It will not be published, only announced for those who want the catalog which will then be sent off list.
Two of these forums are intended for this purpose. SALGO is not, although it allows advertising as long as it is not excessive. I will discuss it with SALGO's moderator.
In the meantime I have two rifles available. First, a CZ 600ZKK in very good order. I have inspected it but not closely. The metalwork seems 100% OK, no dings or scratches. The stock has a minor ding and one or two minor scratches, nothing that can't easily be fixed and practically invisible. The rifle is as good as my Sako which I have cared for and which is practically mint. Calibre 7x57. The 7x57 is considered a bit underpowered these days, but only because factory ammo is loaded to low pressure for safety in the many old rifles still around. Handloaded it is a good calibre. Even the factory loads are plenty adequate for Impala size game at moderate range. It has a Lynx 4x40 scope in Lynx bases and rings. Asking R2500. Even these days that is so cheap it's a gift, a new scope and mounts would be nearly that much and a new CZ would be about 10K. Obviously transport costs would be added if it goes any distance outside greater Cape Town. As no dealer actually buys firearms these days the deal will be owner to buyer. The dealer gets a commission, which is very modest.
The second rifle is a Swedish Husqvarna in 30-06. I haven't seen that one yet but I am told it is in a similar good condition to the CZ. Also has a scope but I don't know which. Also R2500 and also a gift at that price.
Naturally it is not easy to buy a rifle sight unseen. If anyone is interested I will be glad to photograph both rifles and write a detailed report of every detail and every mark.
Test firing is a bit more difficult and not practical.

worthless or nearly so. And because of the four gun limit for non-dedicated
shooters a lot of guns are being disposed of. But one of the interesting
things is how few quality service pistols are available second hand. I
define service pistols as those primarily designed for and aimed at the
military and police market. That would include most pistols that we would
consider serious defense pistols, like Glock, HK, CZ75, Sig-Sauer and
similar weapons. Not too many of those are found on the second hand market
because those who buy them take self defense seriously and do not sell them.
But a few do appear. Not long ago Strand Guns had a Sig-Sauer P220 in 45ACP
for R2200. You might try Suburban Guns. I saw a few nice used guns
there a while back. Look around and don't be in a hurry. There are guys
with more than four guns who don't want to go dedicated and who will let a
nice gun go to a good home for next to nothing. I don't like the idea of
anyone being forced to part with a good gun for next to nothing but that's
my advice.
The CZ75 is a good gun. The compact model is preferred as a carry piece
but they seem to be quite rare and their owners even less inclined to part
with them.

505|503|2008-12-11 10:55:25|grcjos001|Re: Wanted: CZ75 , Compact or full size, or Rami|Hi Dick,
Suprisingly, the CZ75 is the gun the I have found the most of. I have
found them for prices ranging from R6000 (at suburban) to about R2000
at other places (that will remain unnamed on a public blog... at
least until Ive bought the next one that comes in at that price!).
Gun shops are buying these guns for less than R400 a piece. One gun
shop gave my details, and one other guys details, to someone who
wanted R500. The shop considered that far too much! Clearly, he phone
the other guy first... I would have snapped that up faster than a
free holiday. That's the sort of deal I'm looking for, being a
student and all.
The rami is basically a subcompact version of the CZ75. It is THE
carry gun in my opinion. It has the super skinny slide of all the
CZ75s, making it incredibly comfortable. It also has the reliability
and accuracy reputation of its bigger brothers. It won the Guns and
Ammo (I think!) Gun of the Year award a couple of years ago.
Unfortunatly, compacts are as rare as hens teeth, and ramis seem to
be non-existant in SA.

and sell it at a profit. If they already have two or three on the shelf,

I've dealt with some really nice dealers. The Pro-Sport in Standerton, for
example, took in two guns and took it off the guys licence. At the time I'd
already arranged to buy those guns from him for a few hundred each, but he
couldn't get hold of me and wanted to get the guns off his name.
When I went there, they told me to speak to the original owner, pay him
what we'd agreed, and they made out the paperwork.
So they're storing the guns, and they mailed me the paperwork, and they're
not asking any money at all.
So phone I think the dude's name is Pierre at the Pro-Sport in Standerton,

full size, or compact, or (in the unlikely event that I find one) a

Hi Joshua,
Following my first (unhelpful) reply, I visited my friend Valdor Uren owner
of Strand Guns today. He has a used CZ75 full size model. It is one of
those that was finished with baked enamel which is worn off at the muzzle
and other places from holster wear. I have in the past reblued one of
those or to be more accurate stripped off the enamel and blued it. Some
guns are fired little but carried a lot and in the normal course of things
the blue gets rubbed off and they pick up other little dings and scratches,
but they are just cosmetic. I don't know how good the gun is mechanically
but it takes a lot of shooting to wear a CZ75. He is looking for somewhere
over R2000 for it. I have no idea whether that is reasonable in this market
but it is a fraction of the price of a new one.
More interesting to me is the Sig Sauer P220 in 45ACP for which he wants the
same money as the CZ. I have the same gun in 9mmP. Next year I will have
had it thirty years. It is well used and carried daily and functions as
flawlessly as the day I bought it. So I am a big fan of Sig.
I note that you are looking particularly for a CZ75 but you did not say what
you intend to use it for. If it is personal defense with some recreational
and practice shooting thrown in, it would have made more sense if you had
said any good quality sevice pistol. The CZ is good but not better than
Sig. In fact Sig reliability is legendary, and I reckon it is the most
functionally reliable and hassle free pistol ever made. Some US police
departments have ditched their Glocks and replaced with Sigs for that
reason. It is rather bulky for carry in hot weather but no more than a full
size CZ75 and I have developed ways of carrying concealed wearing only a
shirt and slacks. Being alloy framed it is quite light for its size. If
you would like to shoot one call me and we can set up a shoot at my range at
Somerset West.
Valdor's Sig also has some holster wear and a few minor marks. I take the
view that used guns are like used cars. You can get a very good used car
five years old but you are not likely to find one without any marks of use.
I'm also not sure whether it has a spare mag, you'll have to ask Valdor. I
would also be dishonest if I did not say that Sig mags are hard to get if at
all, but Suburban Guns might be able to get them at a price. A new Sig is
well over 10K probably at least R15K.
At the very least you would do yourself a favour by keeping an open mind and
checking out all the options. You never know what you might find.

513|503|2008-12-19 10:18:53|grcjos001|Re: Wanted: CZ75 , Compact or full size, or Rami|Thanks for the reply. I looked for sigs for a while, as I know just how
legendary their performance is. The one thing that put me off was the
thick slide. I find the CZ75 full size MUCH more comfortable to carry
than even a glock 26. I tried on one of each for camparison's sake in
an IWB. I can't even imagine trying to carry something so thick on a
daily basis. The sig slide, from what I've heard is thicker than the

Intended use is for regular carry, and some light IDPA shooting thrown
in. I work for Cape Town Nature Conservation, and a disturbingly high

half of them carry pistols.
Anyway, all that asside, I've found a pistol. A CZ75 on a private sale
for considerably less than that sig :)

I'm glad you found what you wanted. Nor am I surprised that you got it for
under 2K in this market in which some owners would rather give them away to
another citizen that hand them to SAPS. It is an entirely reasonable point
of view and I would do the same.
I can't comment on the relative comfort or otherwise of different weapons as
I have not tried them all. I am surprised that the CZ75 would be
significantly different but if that's what you found there is no argument
and your choice is therefore the right one. The Sig slide is quite thick,
about 25mm compared with 22mm for the Colt 1911. I have not measured a
Glock slide but from simple observation the Glock slide is slimmer. The
Sig is certainly a military/police pistol not designed with concealed
civilian carry in mind. I found it anything but comfortable with an inside
waistband holster at first. But, being stuck with it and being very happy
with it otherwise I was forced to persevere, and have succeeded to a
reasonable if not perfect extent.
There is nothing new or unique about my method. To start with I am a
surveyor and normally wear those "bush jacket" half jackets because the many
pockets are so useful for all the bits and pieces I carry for work. That
naturally aids concealment. Nonetheless I am often shirt and slacks only
in hot weather. It is not possible to completely conceal such a bulky gun
from those who are looking for it or who are experienced in spotting
concealed weapons. My aim is to make it more or less invisible to the
average citizen. That is best described as "invisible in plain sight" and
is based on the principle that most people don't notice anything that is not
either overtly obvious or that is shoved in their faces.
I wear slacks that are a generous fit and don't show any "pull" from the gun
holstered inside the waistband. Then I wear loose ( baggy ) shirts. If
the tail of the shirt if pulled over the grip and the shirt worn in what the
ladies call "blouson" style all that can be seen is the belt clip and a
slight bulge in the shirt. If the trousers and shirt are dark coloured it
helps, and it helps further if they are a similar colour because the
irregularity where the shirt is pulled over the grip is less obvious because
the similar colour of trousers and shirt blurrs the interface between them.
I carry daily like this, and as far as I can tell by watching people in
shopping malls it is never noticed. I even attend meetings with clients
who have expressed a desire to have no guns on their premises and it has not
yet been picked up. Careful choice of slacks and belts and the tension of
the latter has reduced discomfort to the point at which I carry all day
without problem. I am 1.80m tall, 75kg and quite slim. Loose clothes on
my tall slim frame help concealment. It might not work so well for other
body types. A smaller gun like a Walther PPK would naturally conceal much
more easily.
This method of carry is sufficiently well concealed for the purpose but
would not be adequate for a shall we say a gun that does not comply with
certain formalities or where complete concealment is essential. That's a
whole other ball game. The best method is belly band which is perfectly
comfortable in cool weather but not so comfortable in hot weather.
Intended use is for regular carry, and some light IDPA shooting thrown
in. I work for Cape Town Nature Conservation, and a disturbingly high
percentage of my colleages have been shot at while on the job. About
half of them carry pistols.
That is particularly interesting in view of the attacks on Nature
Conservation turf and the prohibition of carry for civilians. I am
completely on your side in arming yourself but not at all amused that I
can't be armed on the same turf.

I'm spending my days chasing and assisting in the arrest of poachers, armed robbers and others, with nothing but pepper spray in my pocket. I NEED a firearm! If anyone out there is looking to sell a decent service-type pistol, please let me know. My preference is for a CZ 75, but others (glocks, sigs, etc) will also be considered.
Kind regards,
Josh

Just seen your message. Am running round like a crazy guy this morning so
this will be brief. Depends where you are. I know of two CZ75s for sale
in Somerset West and Strand. One used but good the other brand new ( fired
ten rounds ). A third will probably be available within days, a gun known
to me and in new condition. Will get back to you with more detail later
today.

523|520|2009-03-30 19:37:50|Richard Boothroyd|Re: Service Pistol|Right, Josh, here we go.
The owners of Allied Arms in Somerset West and Strand Guns are my friends
but I have no financial interest in either, nor do I get anything out of
facilitating a sale. It is just a matter of mutual cooperation, if I can
help a friend I will do so. Valdor Uren, owner of Strand Guns, operates
single handedly on a shoestring. He has no website yet because he will
have to do it himself and has not yet gotten through that learning curve.
So if I can help him to sell through places like SAGuns4sale I will do so.
He is also the straightest guy you will ever meet and worth doing business
with.
Allied Arms has an early model CZ75 with the baked on paint finish. The
owner said he had fired it but not much. It is brand spanking new in its
original box and looks as if it has not been fired at all. I know that
because I examined it last week. A few years back I did the gunsmithing
work for Allied Arms on a part time basis. Often on a Saturday morning you
will find me and a couple of mates drinking lousy coffee and talking guns at
Allied Arms. Its my idea of rest and recreation. You can contact them at
021 852 3216.
Strand Guns has a CZ75 handed to him by one of our local club members. It
was his wife's. I was present when they handed it over. They shot it
regularly on the range, so it is well used and the finish is worn. Can't
remember whether it is blued or paint finish, blued I think. But, although
the finish is a bit worn from use there are no dings and dents. So it is
used but well cared for. The action is slick and smooth and the gun is
100% OK.
My wife's nephew has had a CZ 75 for several years. He has worked off shore
in the oil industry also for several years, so the gun has not been fired
much. When he first had it he fired it quite regularly at our local range
and I got him started in handloading. So I have fired that gun myself.
But after the first year or two it has seldom been fired because he has been
in SA so little. He is visiting family in SA right now from Singapore, and
told me on Saturday that he will not likely ever live in SA again and plans
to hand the gun to Strand Guns. As far as I know the gun is pretty much in
mint condition but I will be able to confirm that soon. Strand Guns 021
853 7231.
So there you have three good options. I have no idea what the asking
prices will be. Not high in this climate I should think. All the owners
know the realities of the present market. But, if I were buying, I would
be inclined not to screw it down to the minimum, I'd be inclined to offer a
fair price in the circumstances. I'd say between 2000 and 3000. That's
probably a bit higher than a CZ75 could be bought for, but not much higher,
and it still a bargain for that sort of gun. But that's your call and I
have no influence in the matter.
If you are not near Cape Town a gun can be couriered to you.

I also see that they need to be supported, otherwise we may find ourselves with no place to buy ammo, etc. Price wise, I'm inclined to believe that any half decent CZ is a bargain. That said, I'm on a very tight budget, so 2000 is about the absolute max for me at this stage. I'll be in contact with the guys who's numbers you gave.

533|532|2009-09-28 12:03:18|Richard Boothroyd|Re: Workshop equip|Hi Hilton,
A friend and I have looked at this issue in some depth. I have an older ML7 that has the same basic specs. The spindle bore is 5/8" which is slightly under 16mm. Obviously sporter barrels very a bit but generally they 15.5 - 16 at the muzzle and 20 just ahead of the chamber reinforce. That distance is typically 16 inches. Some light barrels are as little as 15 at the muzzle. Allowing for the No 2 morse taper such a barrel would probably enter the spindle about four or five inches. That might, and note "might" leave the chamber end just far enough from the tailstock to allow chamber reaming. The tailstock will also overhang the end of the bed an inch or so without detriment.
I looked into this not so much for chambering as threading. We planned to get Truvelo barrels unthreaded and short chambered. A short chambered barrel allows very precise headspacing by hand with a tap wrench, but we wanted to control the threading ourselves for a good fit. Most dead centres protrude an inch or so from their sockets thus shortening the distance between centres. I made a No 2 morse taper center for the tailstock dimensioned so that the point protrudes just enough to hold the work. A slim barrel can be held in a chuck with the muzzle a couple of inches into the spindle, so threadinf is possible in those circumstances.
But it is a desperation measure and not satisfactory. Jacques Arzul in Stellenbosch has a long bed Super 7 for that reason. Myford's latest lathe which is an upgraded Super 7 they call the Connoisseur, has a 28mm spindle bore.

540|540|2010-02-04 15:43:35|Hilton|Article on Haiti in Botswana press (Makes you think)|A MUST READ.........
Subject: FW: Article on Haiti in Botswana press (Makes you think)
This was written by a black journalist who writes under the name 'Loose
Canon' for the "Sunday Standard', a newspaper in Botswana.
Makes one think?? ?
The following is an article that appeared in The Sunday Standard (Botswana)
of 24.01.10. Loose Canon contributes regularly to newspapers.
Haiti and the blacks!
by Loose Canon
24.01.2010 4:23:39
I hope black people will learn a lesson from the earthquake that hit Haiti.
If they don't learn anything from it, then I throw up my hands in despair
and give up.
Let's start with a few basic facts. Until the earthquake, I never knew there
was a place called Haiti. I was taught geography at school but I cannot
remember a time when the mistress told us about Haiti. It must have been one
of those insignificant countries that we had no reason to know about.
I was fairly good at geography because I knew which country was on which
continent. I also knew many capital cities. But as for Haiti I was clueless.
Now the whole world, including myself, knows about Haiti. I heard news of
the earthquake on the radio. I wondered where Haiti was and what sort of
people lived there.
Finally, when I switched on the television, I was informed that Haiti is an
island out in the Caribbean. Television pictures revealed a place populated
by black people.
From the non-stop television coverage of the earthquake, I got to learn
about the history of Haiti. It was not a good history lesson. It would seem
throughout its existence Haiti has suffered a series of natural calamities.
In the process it has sunk even deeper into poverty and deprivation.
Like all places populated by black people, Haiti is poor. As I watched the
television images, I felt very sorry for that forsaken place.
Then I was hit by a thunderbolt.
I wondered what if there were no white people. You see, when the earthquake
hit Haiti somebody had to come to its assistance. There had to be a rescue
effort. The Haitians who survived of course did their fair bit by digging
out their families from the collapsed ramshackle buildings.
But such was the scale of the devastation and the loss of human life that a
bigger effort was needed. For that sort of work, you need heavy lifting gear
and other sophisticated rescue equipment. I have been following the story of
the earthquake keenly. I can attest to the fact that the first people to
arrive with sniffer dogs were white crews from all over the world.
The aeroplanes that set off carrying water and food were from white
countries. Not only that, the teams of volunteer doctors that I saw on
television comprised white people from across the world. As the sniffer dogs
went into action, the organized rescue teams that carried the stretchers
were made up of white people.
It was announced that a mobile hospital was on the way. It was coming from a
white country. For all intents and purposes in the aftermath of the
earthquake, Haiti was literally swarming with white people. They had all
arrived to save the poor blacks. And the locals were so happy to see them.
Granted there were teams from the Orient such as the Chinese and Japanese.
They too had quickly left their homes and families to go and assist the
stricken people of Haiti.
It is obvious to everyone that this was a devastating earthquake and the
work to repair Haiti and return it to a modicum of normalcy will take many
years. Somebody had to commit funds to this effort. Most of the countries
that have committed funds to aid the recovery are white. In fact, it would
seem the whites are running the show in Haiti.
What is my point?
My point is that ever since Haiti was hit by the earthquake I have not seen
any of my folks from Africa.
Unless the television cameras deliberately ignored them, I never saw a
rescue team from my motherland. Nor did I see any sniffer dogs from down
here.
Heck, I never saw a single traditional doctor busy divining where to find
people buried under the rubble.
Haiti is a land of black people. I would have expected the place to be
swarming with black people helping their own. They were nowhere to be seen.
I never saw any ships from black countries pulling into the harbour.
As the air traffic circled above the small airport, none of the planes was
reported as coming from Africa. The blacks were nowhere to be found. They
issued tepid statements of condolence to the people of Haiti and a few of
the African countries donated small amounts of cash.
Granted that was better than nothing. But I must say I was disappointed. I
was sad because the blacks did not behave as I had expected.
You see, for far too long black countries have been insolent to the point of
being abusive. They have a tendency of insulting the white man and telling
him to keep out of their countries.
In Fact, black people have the temerity to tell white people they can
perfectly survive on their own.
So I had expected the black countries to be consistent and behave true to
form. Why didn't black countries tell white countries to stay away from
Haiti because we were quite capable of leading the rescue effort? We should
have insulted them as we often do at international forums.
There, our countries insult white countries and accuse them of imperialism
and neo colonialism. I was extremely disappointed when our countries failed
to accuse white people of practicing imperialism and neo colonialism by
coming to rescue the blacks of Haiti.
We should have told them we have better sniffer dogs that have been taught
only to rescue black people. We should have told their ships to stay away
and their planes not to overfly Haiti because we were up to the job with our
own ships and aeroplanes.
We should have brought in our traditional food instead of the strange
rations the Haitians are not accustomed to.
I am so disappointed by the black leaders that I hope never to hear them
again bleating about how bad white people are. The earthquake in Haiti was
the most opportune time to show the whites, once and for all, that we don't
need them.
From now onwards, I want black leaders to shut up and never accuse ever
again, white people of being bad. I am sick and tired of big words such as
imperialism and neo colonialism which are unable to rescue victims of the
earthquake.
I hope this is not the last earthquake that hits a black country. I want the
next one to specifically hit the residence of The Evil Self-centred Old Man
in Harare, Zimbabwe who does nothing for his people. Then we will see if he
will abuse the white crew coming to rescue him and his wife Ghastly Grace!

545|545|2010-04-10 16:49:53|Hilton|Firearms lies by police|TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Dear Everybody
This e-mail is going to everybody who is in my address book. I apologize if
you receive this e-mail and you are not a firearm owner or if you are not
interested in its contents. If you are interested in its contents I appeal
to you to pass on this e-mail to as many people in your address book that
you think might have an interest in its contents.
The South African Police Services appears to have embarked upon a deliberate
campaign to mislead the firearm owning public into believing that the
amnesty which expires on the 11th April 2010 is the last opportunity that
the public has to re-licence firearms for which they hold old Arms and
Ammunition Act licences and which have not been renewed. This is patently
untrue and misleading. In terms of the South African Hunters and Game
Conservation decision all old Arms and Ammunition Act licences in the form
of green cards or those pasted into your identity document are valid
indefinitely. The amnesty is only in respect of firearms that are illegal.
The South African Police Services are telling the public that you have until
the 11th April 2010 to lodge an application for a new licence for your old
Act licence and the feedback that I am receiving is that the public are
being misled into believing that after the 11th April 2010 their old Arms
and Ammunitions Act licences will become invalid and they will be in illegal
possession of that firearm.
Nothing is further from the truth. If you have an old Act licence, it
remains valid. If you have not applied to renew that licence, it still
remains valid. Your possession of the firearm is legal and you can continue
to use the firearm for any lawful purpose. Do not believe the South African
Police Services if they say that your firearm will become illegal, or that
you will be arrested, or that you have to apply for a new licence for that
firearm. This is part of a political strategy to force people to comply
with the Firearms Control Act where it is not necessary, or to force people
to hand in firearms where it is not necessary.
I am collecting a body of evidence to try and show that the SAPS have
embarked upon a deliberate campaign to mislead the public. I have my
suspicions where this misleading information comes from and it is my
intention to hold those officers in the SAPS accountable in law. If people
have handed in firearms for destruction (and in the process have not been
told that they can apply for compensation) as a result of false or
misleading statements by the SAPS, I want to know. You can e-mail this
information to me at African Gun Owners Association at saga@....
The SAPS have already been ordered in principle that they will have to pay
compensation to the public for firearms that have been surrendered. It is
time that firearm owners take a principle stand and do not bow to unlawful
SAPS pressures or actions.
Once again, I request that you circulate this e-mail as widely and quickly
as possible as the amnesty cut-off date is the 11th April 2010 and it is my
desire to ensure that as few as possible people hand in their firearms for
destruction as a result of the misleading and dishonest campaign embarked
upon by the SAPS.
Yours faithfully
