The new features significantly improve the designer's and programmer's ability to assemble and add interactivity to sound, picture, text and movie files. New features include support for scrolling text and PICT files and the ability to assign QuickTime controllers to movies. Additionally, a cross platform utility has been added that checks media files for compatibility with the Microsoft Windows platform and converts them, if necessary. The Apple Media Tool Programming Environment (PE), the fully object-oriented programming language and framework that allows programmers to add functionality to projects created with the Apple Media Tool, has new features as well, including twice as many classes (a class is a set of tools or capabilities) as version 1.0, thus it provides programmers with a richer development environment. These classes have also been enhanced to support the new Tool features. In addition, both the Tool and the PE now ship with a demo CD that provides an electronic version of the technical documentation, as well as sample code and several demo projects. The CD also contains a demo version of the Tool, which allows designers to create a project without generating a runtime. This CD-ROM is also available in the United States independently of the Kit for US $10 plus shipping and handling. To order the CD, call 1-800-371-0612. Version 1.1 of the Apple Media Kit will be sent free to all registered users of version 1.0. The Apple Media Kit, as well as its separate components, is available through APDA , Apple's source for developer tools, by calling 1-800-282-2732 (U.S.), 1-800-637-0029 (Canada), or 716-871-6555 (International). Licensing -------- To make licensing simpler and more affordable, Apple has bundled the run time licensing of the Apple Media Kit with QuickTime and QuickTime for Windows. This single license, valid for three years, is available for enterprise and commercial publishers at a flat fee of $500 per title. For educational institutions and non-profit organizations there is no royalty fee. =============================================================================== * QuickTake 100 Now Available The QuickTake 100 for Macintosh was announced in February and is shipping and in very good supply to meet customer demand. To correct the problem, do the following: 1) Turn Speech Recognition off. 2) Check to see if Sound Out in Sound Control Panel is set to 44 KHz. If so, click 22 KHz setting. 3) Close Sound Control Panel and turn on Speech Recognition. The Sound control panel should always be set to 22 KHz when using Speech Recognition. Setting Sound Out to 44.1kHz does not affect the audio off the CDs. Audio CDs just play through, the Sound Out settings are used for digital recording only. =============================================================================== * New Native Power Macintosh Applications The following list of new Power Macintosh applications supplements the list of Native Applications in the 4/26 AppleNews. Additional Speed Tips: 1) Use the VRAM-based video in the 7100 or 8100. 2) Add a cache card if you're using a 6100 or 7100, for a boost of about 20%. The difference in performance between the worst settings and optimum settings can be more than 100%. =============================================================================== * Modern Memory Manager on the Power Macintosh For all you techies out there, here are some interesting articles that answer some questions that many have posed recently regarding the Modern Memory Manager. Q: What is the Modern Memory Manager? A: The Memory Manager has been completely rewritten in C and compiled into native PowerPC code. It offers better performance than the previous 680x0 assembly code because it runs in the native PowerPC environment. In addition, performance enhancements were made by significantly improving the heap management algorithms. Memory Control Panel -------------------- With the new Memory Manager (called Modern Memory Manager), there is a modification to the memory control panel. It is possible to disable this new Memory Manager and revert to the old Memory Manager in ROM. This is done through the Modern Memory Manager panel in the Memory Control Panel. The default setting is using the new Memory Manager. Q: Why is the RAM requirement lower for a program when virtual memory (VM) is running? When you Get Info on an application on a Power Macintosh you get an additional message that gives a lower memory requirement if you have VM turned on. Since this still looks like RAM to the application, why is there a lower RAM requirement? A: The answer to your question lies in how the Power Macintosh loads an application into memory. A 680x0-based application stores executable code in the CODE resource and uses the Resource Manager to load CODE resources into memory. A Power Macintosh application, on the other hand, stores executable code in the data fork of an application. This way, a single program can work on a 680x0 Macintosh and a Power Macintosh. With Virtual Memory enabled, the Virtual Memory Manager on the Power Macintosh will reuse the data fork of the application as a paging file to help improve performance. As a result, only the needed portions of code get loaded into memory, thus reducing the memory requirements of an application. =============================================================================== * Apple Multiple Scan Monitors- Resolutions and Adapters Info Apple Multiple Scan Displays support several resolutions, but many 'pre-Centris' Macintosh computers will only recognize the displays as a 14-in color display (640 x 480) without an adapter. The adapters are available from Enhance Cable Technology of San Jose, CA- their number is 800 343-2425. The following chart shows various Macintosh systems and the resolutions they support. If there is a 'Y' in the Display Manager column, that Macintosh can work at the resolutions listed (and can switch between resolutions without having to restart). If there is an 'N', you must obtain the adapter to work at resolutions other than 640 x 480. The Power Macintosh InstallMeFirst CD, which was included with all Power Macintosh computers (including Power Macintosh AV systems) until May 2, 1994, DOES NOT contain PlainTalk software because the CD version was not ready at the time Power Macintosh products began shipping. A revised InstallMeFirst CD will be included with all Power Macintosh systems (including Power Macintosh AV systems) beginning May 2, 1994, which DOES contain PlainTalk software. (As before, PlainTalk software will also be bundled on the hard disk of Power Macintosh AV CPUs.) Customers who purchased Power Macintosh CPUs that did not ship with PlainTalk software on the InstallMeFirst CD may obtain the software either on CD or on disk by calling the Customer Assistance Center at (800) 776-2333. Customers who purchased non-AV Power Macintosh computers will soon be able to buy the PlainTalk for Power Macintosh accessory kit (M2844LL/A), which contains PlainTalk software and the Apple PlainTalk microphone, through Apple Authorized Resellers.
