I. Introduction-- Start Here

System Requirements: Apple IIgs (at least 512kB memory). You will need
the game "Mean 18" and GS-ShrinkIt (also called "GSHK", "ShrinkIt-GS",
...) to unShrink a course to a Mean 18 course diskette or to your Mean
18 folder on hard disk. 

     A number of different users have created Mean 18 courses using the
course designer utility included with the game. These vary widely in
challenge Level and landscaping.
 
     The files may arrive on your GS as "Text" type files. This is okay.
GS-ShrinkIt can deal with .shk and .acu files even if they are called
"Text" files by GS/OS.

     If you are launching a deportected version of Mean 18 from hard
disk, your Mean 18 stuff can be in a folder on any hard disk volume.
However,  it may be necessary to first copy the course files (including
any Saves) for the courses you wish to play to the main (root) directory
of the boot volume. Any saves will be to this volume. After playing, you
can copy any Saves to your Mean 18 folder and, then erase the course
files from your boot volume main directory.

Alphabetland golf course is not designed for kids!  Think of all the
potential the alphabet has for possible hole layouts. And what about the
tree configurations possible.  The front nine lulls you into thinking
this is an easy course, but wait until the back nine.  It is tough if
you take the chances offered to try to score well.  Lots of water and
sand on this course and fun greens.  I had a lot of fun creating this
course in thanks to all those who created courses that I have downloaded

day in the sun at Desert Rock, a challenging but fair Mean 18 course.
Some water, some sand, some scraggly fairways and undulating greens
should provide something for everyone. Like Progressive C.C. this course
should be unpacked with Shrinkit 3.0x or GS Shrinkit. Both courses are
long (7,000 yards+) and were really designed to be played from the

The scenic and picturesque Presidio golf course, in what was the heart
of San Francisco....before the quake of '89 that is.  Features tough
holes and even tougher greens.  You'll need get close for pars...and
chip in for Birdies!  Some holes on the back nine feature split
fairways, play them from either the regular or pro tees and have twice

Progressive C.C. takes its name from the fact that it starts out fairly
easy then gets progressively more difficult. Precision is valued more
than power on the back side, for example. Best round so far that I know

Seaview, a new Mean 18 course. Not your typical "Island-hopper" layout;
challenging but pretty fair. Although there is water everywhere, it
doesn't always come into play on a given hole. Keep a sharp eye out...
you might even spot a whale! (Or if you're unlucky... a SHARK!)

Kemper Lakes Course (included in SIXPACK.SHK)

Site of the 1989 PGA Championship, Kemper Lakes is one of the toughest
tests of golfing skill in the world.  It has only been open since 1979
and it is ranked in the top 100 courses in the United States.  The PGA
was held on August 10-13, 1989 and the championship was won by Payne
Stewart with a 72 hole score of -4.

I designed it using the official yardage book from the PGA tournament,
so it is as exact as I could make it.  Hole #3 is the signature hole
with the Kemper Lakes logo.  Enjoy and try to beat Stewart's score.

For anyone trying to design a course, I would suggest downloading the
Isles Charlyn course.  This course inspired me to make my courses
imaginative and interesting.


Oak Hill Course (included in SIXPACK.SHK)

The East course of Oak Hill Country Club, Rochester, N.Y. is the site
for this year's U.S. Open.  A fitting host for a Big Four event, the Oak
Hill course boasts both a rich tradition and a superior layout. 
Designed by renowned golf-course architect Donald Ross in 1926
(translated by Tom Coates for Mean 18), Oak Hill has hosted two previous
Opens (1956 and 1968) and a PGA Championship.

Curtis Strange is the defending champion.


Thinking Man's Golf (included in SIXPACK.SHK)

This course is based on 3M's 1966 board game.  There are 18 holes from
championship courses in the US.  It is very challenging.  The text file
included lists all of the holes and golf courses.


Royal Kaanapali Course (included in SIXPACK.SHK)

The Royal Kaanapali Golf Course is on the beautiful island of Maui in
the Hawaiian Islands.  Maui No Ka Oi means Maui Is The Best.  Whale
watching is popular on Maui and watch out for the Banyan Trees!!!


Skara Brae Dunes Course (included in SIXPACK.SHK)

After fighting off Fire-Breathing Dragons, numerous Berserkers, downing
several tankards of Ale and singing along with the local Bard, a warrior
needs some relaxation.  After visiting the nearest Mystic Healer to
acquire the magick needed to guide the tiny white orb straight and true,
the golfing Avatar heads for the Mythical Island of Skara Brae to
challenge the Dunes course owned by the firm of Mangar & Mondain.

You will need all of the magick you can muster to break par.  There
seems to be a strange wind on some holes that will affect you shot. 
Good luck and watch out for the monster of Loch Shiin.

This is the first course that I have designed from scratch.  My other
courses (Kaanapali, Thinking Man's & Brutal) were taken from course
layouts.  I was inspired by Larry McEwen's three courses when I came up
with the idea for this course.  I hope others take a clue from his
elegance of design.


Brutal Golf Course (included in SIXPACK.SHK)

This Mean 18 golf course is a compilation of holes from the book "100
Best Golf Holes In The World".  It includes the infamous "Hell's Half
Acre" #7 at Pine Valley in New Jersey and the famous "Lone Cypress" #16
at Cypress Point in Monterrey, CA.  All of the holes have a water hazard
except "Hell's Half Acre" which is mostly sand.  It isn't easy to beat
par, my best score is 70.  The included text file lists all of the
holes.
