There's a full implementation of popen() and pclose() in Steven's
"Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" (on page 437-439,
also available on the net at URL "ftp://ftp.uu.net/published/books/
stevens.advprog.tar.Z").  But it uses waitpid(), which GNO also
doesn't have yet.
