Overview: The TMS320C40 architecture combines a high performance CPU, multichannel DMA coprocessor, on-chip memory, six communication ports, dual memory buses, timers, and emulation support. Given this complexity, developers must investigate many areas before proceeding to their own single or multiple TMS320C40 designs. Hardware design areas of concern include global memory arbitration, DSP-to-DSP interconnection via the communication ports, and peripheral device interface to the memory bus or communication port. For the DSP software engineer, areas of concern include application-specific algorithm characterization, real-time tradeoffs between C and assembly language, multi-tasking support, communication port software, and other real-time peripheral software drivers. The Slalom-40 allows the designer to address all of these concerns via a combination of its on-board functionality, interconnect capability, the robust Texas Instruments C/assembly language source debugger, and the availability of commercial software packages such as SPOX.
