Question: Problems with bringing up the XDS510 emulator screen (PC)

Answer:

  1. Review the installation guide step-by-step.
  2. Type " emurst " and observe if there is any error message:
    If
" cannot detect target power " then check the voltage level in the emulator connector pins marked with +5v (refer to the Emulator Installation guide)
  3. If you receive the " cannot initialize the target " message, then:
    • Verify your cabling and target power
    • Be sure that the device is not loose in the socket
    • Be sure that TCKRET is connected (TCKRET is in fact the JTAG clock)
    • Try different values for the -p option (change simultaneously the switches in the XDS510 emulator board)
    • If you are debugging a multiprocessing system, are you using the OS/2 version? Are you sure about the devices in your scan path? Have you set the variable IOPL=YES in your config.sys?
    • Verify that you are using the correct debugger given the silicon release version (this information is provided under the emulator menu). Sometimes the "scan path" device description changes between different device revs.

If the problem persists, you may have a system related issue:

  • Try in a different computer. Some called "IBM compatibles" are not in reality.
  • Try using the XDS510 in a different AT slot within your computer
  • Try removing other un-used cards from your computer. Disconnect it from a network if necessary.
  • Try to slow-down the PC. Some PC's offer a turbo switch (disable it!)
  • Try adding wait states to the I/O bus or slow-down its clock via jumpers or the BIOS.
