TMS320C3x DSP Teaching Kit

Using a mixture of theory and laboratory work, the DSP Teaching Kit enables students to grasp the fundamentals of DSP. The kit (part number TMD3200130), available for a suggested retail price of US $199, can be used to teach computer and electrical engineering students, corporate training courses or technicians.

Developed with the assistance of the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, the kit is both easy to use and complete. With the supplied instruction guides, tests and hardware, the instructor is equipped to deliver five brilliant lectures on the basics of DSP. Each lecture is designed to provide 50 minutes of instruction and 30 minutes of demonstrations.

At the heart of the DSP Teaching kit is the 'C3x DSK, a low-cost, flexible and easy-to-use tool ideal for the evaluation and demonstration of DSP techniques.

Supported Systems

The DSK is supported by any IBM PC-compatible system. You can expand your evaluation and development of DSPs with other TI products such as the TMS320 Evaluation Modules (EVMs). The 'C3x DSK allows easy migration of code to other 'C3x development tools.

Lecture Topics

Lecture 1. Introduction — Why DSP?
This lecture dissolves the mystery surrounding DSPs and explores the advantages of digital systems. The demonstration illustrates the effectiveness of a DSP in a multiply and accumulate operation (MAC) by introducing a tone generator.

Lecture 2. Sampling, Conversion and Systems
The conversion of analog to digital and sampling criteria are covered, along with the functional blocks of a DSP system. Included in the demonstrations is the crucial issue of aliasing.

Lecture 3. Filtering
Starting from the analog world, the concepts of digital filtering are introduced, aided by a demonstration of filter design and the effect of filtering on an audio signal.

Lecture 4. The Frequency Domain — DFTs, FFTs
The fourth lecture looks at the frequency domain and takes a practical approach to a difficult topic: discrete and fast fourier transforms. This demonstration includes the process of signal analysis.

Lecture 5. Applications — Speech and Image Processing
The final lecture provides a foundation for further study by introducing the concepts of speech and image processing. The demonstration features the design of a tone generation, including different methods for sound generation.
