Texas Instruments has introduced a family of 95-milliohm current-protected high-side switches well-suited for portable applications including laptops, scanners and bar code readers.
The TPS201X family incorporates a 95-milliohm switch with current limiting, thermal shutdown, controlled switching times (to reduce electro-magnetic interference) and ESD protection.
These switches are intended for applications in which the switch can encounter heavy capacitive loads and short circuits. Other applications include mice, PCMCIA cards or keyboards.
Many of today's portable systems use high-side switches to power external devices. Frequently, complex discrete protection circuitry or fuses are added to safeguard the system and the user. The TPS201x family uses current limiting and thermal shutdown to protect the host and itself from fault conditions.
The TPS201X devices are available now from TI and its Authorized Distributors.

A new analog-to-digital converter from Texas Instruments is capable of 48k samples a second with 18-bit resolution. This new device is well-suited for mini disc business audio, multimedia audio and industrial process control applications.
The TLC320AD57 is a stereo (sigma-delta) ADC with two synchronous conversion paths. It uses a 64-times oversampling sigma-delta technique to provide high resolution and low noise.
The device provides differential inputs to the two independent channels for improved signal/noise ratio (97dB), with total harmonic distortion plus noise of 91dB typical. It also integrates the decimation filter, analog filtering and timing and control functions.
The device consumes less than 220 mW from a single 5-V supply. Separate power down controls for both the analog and digital circuitry reduces this to less than 1 mW for power conscious users.
The TLC320AD57 is available now from TI and its Authorized Distributors.
