TI offers PWM application note

A new application report from Texas Instruments details the design of three simple step-down converters using a low-cost PWM (pulse-width-modulation) controller.

The report features TI's TL5001, a PWM control integrated circuit designed for portable and consumer electronics.

The designs include: two converters operating from 12 V and delivering 5 V at 3 A; 3.3 V at 3 A; and one operating from 5 V and delivering 3.3 V at .75 A.

Because electrical and electronic products are required to be lighter and smaller, use less power and cost less, manufacturers are turning to small high-frequency DC-DC converters, such as the TL5001, for power-supply solutions.

The TL5001 is well-suited for LCD backlight supplies, flash memory programming supplies, 5 V-to-3.3 V step-down regulators for mixed-voltage systems and other similar applications. The TL5001 can easily be configured in step-up and step-down and flyback topologies to generate positive supplies from a single battery pack.

The TL5001 offers designers a low-cost switched-mode power supply circuit option. Characterized for operation from -20 degrees to 85 degrees C, the device is offered in a space-saving eight-pin surface mount and a plastic dual in-line package (DIP) at the suggested retail pricing of $.71 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
