Texas Instruments has announced a bipolar RS-232 device that is compatible with previous generations while reducing part count and board space.
The SN75185, well-suited for desktop PCs, terminals and modems, combines three drivers and five receivers. It is pin-to-pin compatible with the SN75C185.
The new device is designed to interface with ANSI EIA/TIA-232-E compliant equipment where higher speed and low-cost are important.
It supports rates up to 120 kilobits per second with shorter cable lengths. This allows for design into systems such as V-34 modems, which require data rates much faster than the RS-232 specification.
The SN75185 is available now from Texas Instruments and its authorized distributors in 20-pin DIP packages. Suggested resale price is $0.56 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
TI's latest generation of low dropout regulators offers improved performance to designers of portable and battery-powered products.
A combination of new circuit design techniques and process innovation has enabled the usual PNP transistor to be replaced by a MOS device, which reduces the dropout voltage and quiescent current.
The new TPS71xx family reduces dropout voltages to a maximum of 32mV at 100mA of output current while maintaining a quiescent current of 350uA independent of load current or dropout voltage.
This is an improvement in dropout voltage of 10 times more than existing competitive regulators and makes the TPS71xx family the lowest dropout voltage devices available in the industry.
The devices are designed specifically for battery powered systems such as cellular telephones, portable computers and portable test-and-measurement instruments. Low power consumption results in significant increase in battery life.
The devices are available now from TI and its authorized distributors . Each device is available in an 8-pin DIP, an 8-pin SOIC and a 20-pin TSSOP. Suggested resale price per device in 1,000-piece quantities are $1.45 for the DIP and SOIC packages, and $1.65 for the TSSOP package.
