New 64-bit RAMDAC needs less RAM

A new 64-bit RAMDAC from TI enables 1280-by-1024 resolution with only 4 megabits of VRAM.

The TVP3026 64-bit RAMDAC (Random Access Memory Digital to Analog Converter) reduces graphics system VRAM requirements with a packed pixel capability. This new performance standard previously would have required 6-8 Mb of VRAM.

The device is compatible with most industry standard graphics controllers, including the S3 Vision968, Matrox MGAII and ATI mach64 accelerators.

The TVP3026 is a single-chip graphics system back-end that integrates three 8-bit video DACs and three 256-by-8 color look-up tables. It implements all the interface functions required by the graphics controller and VRAM. It also supports an industry compatible register interface, allowing easy upgrades from existing 32-bit systems.

Pixel bus data can be split into 1, 2, 4 or 8-bit planes for pseudo color modes, or split into 12, 16 or 24-bit true color for direct color modes.

Two fully programmable frequency synthesizers and an internal Phase Locked Loop (PLL) reduce external component count and simplify graphics system design. Phase-locking the graphics controller and RAMDAC clocks ensures proper timing control, allowing maximum VRAM bandwidth and screen refresh rates.

The TVP3026 is available now from Texas Instruments and TI authorized distributors. Suggested resale pricing in 1,000-unit quantities is:

TI offers ESD-protected Power+ Arrays

Texas Instruments has introduced the industry's first electro-static-discharge protected motor drivers. Five of the new Power+ Arrays are logic-level versions.

These devices are well-suited for ESD-sensitive applications including fractional horsepower motors in various office end equipments, such as: hard disk drives, printers, plotters, copier and fax machines. Other industrial applications: automated test equipment, process control systems, programmable machine tools and robotics.

All of the 10 new devices feature monolithic gate-protected power DMOS transistor arrays that integrate up to six electrically isolated or configured N-channel enhancement-mode DMOS power transistors. Each transistor features an integrated high current 18-V zener diode to prevent gate damage should an overstress condition occur.

Five of the new devices also offer direct logic interface. Most power MOSFETs, which are controlled by a form of logic, require an input voltage in the 10- to 15-V range. Because logic components are typically 5-V devices, voltage-level shifting circuitry is needed between logic and power MOSFETs. However, the logic-level interface on TI's new gate-protected Power+ Arrays reduces the need for voltage-shifting circuitry, which simplifies design.

The new Power+ Arrays are available now from Texas Instruments and TI authorized dealers at the following suggested resale price in 1,000-unit quantities:

New op amps with improved noise performance

Texas Instruments has introduced a family of low power operational amplifiers with improved noise performance and rail-to-rail outputs.

The TLC225x and TLV225x family also have low supply current requirements of 40 microamps.

They are manufactured using the Advanced LinCMOS process, which allows improved noise performance in a 40 microamp per channel CMOS op amp.

The new op amps are well-suited for signal conditioning from high impedance sources and in battery-powered applications. The TLC225x is available for 5-V applications and the TLV225x is designed for 3-V applications. Potential end equipments include automotive sensors, battery-powered medical applications, hand-held instruments, laptop, notebook and palmtop computers, cellular phones and battery-powered consumer products.

The devices are available now from Texas Instruments and TI authorized distributors. Suggested resale prices in 1,000-unit quantities are:
