New driver helps maintain constant fan speed

A key design criterion in motor control applications is minimizing changes in the motor's operation due to variation in supply voltage.

A new pre-FET driver from Texas Instruments offers a simple and cost-effective way to achieve constant load voltage in DC motor controls.

The TPIC2101 is a single-phase low-side pre-FET driver with pulse-width-modulator (PWM) output, which provides constant speed control of unidirectional DC brush motors in applications where the supply voltage changes under normal operating conditions. The device compensates for the speed variations by modifying the PWM duty cycle inversely with the changes in supply voltage. By adjusting the gate drive duty cycle to the FET, constant effective load voltage is maintained and thus constant speed achieved.

For automatic speed control, the TPIC2101 may be interfaced directly with the system microcontroller. The device also can be manually speed-controlled by the supply via a variable resistor. A generic application circuit with the TPIC2101 shows a simplified unidirectional low-side drive scheme for a DC brush motor.

The TPIC2101 controller operates in a sleep state, a run state or a fault state. The device features fault protection for the FET and the load for increased system reliability.

RS-232 device combines 5 drivers, 3 receivers

The SN75196 is a low-cost rugged RS-232 device combining five drivers and three receivers with ESD protection in excess of 10kV on the bus pins and 5 kV on all pins. The SN75196 is designed to be a single-chip solution for the peripheral end of the RS-232 cable. The device compliments the SN75185, which is designed for the PC end of the RS-232 cable and the pin-out allows flow-through board layout. The switching speeds of the SN75196 support data rates up to 120 kbps with cable lengths of three meters. The all-bipolar SN75196 is characterized for operation from 0 degrees to 70 degrees.

SN75196: 20-pin plastic dip - $0.69

SN75196 : 20-pin wide body SOIC - $0.69

Video preamplifier features digital-level contrast

The TLS1233 is a three-channel, 100-MHz wideband video preamplifier system intended for mid- to high-resolution RGB (red-green-blue) color monitors. The TLS1233 features digital-level contrast and brightness controls and independent digital-level gain control for all three amplifiers (R, G and B). All control inputs are high impedance and operate from 0V to 4V for interfacing with serial digital control buses.

TLS1233: 20-pin plastic dual in-line - $0.80

Suggested resale pricing in U.S. dollars in 1K quantities.
