ThunderLAN controller adds power management

End-equipment applications

  • Network interface cards
  • PC motherboards
  • PC Cardbus

Low power consumption

  • Low power CMOS technology

VDD 5-V

  • 3-V/5-V I/O operation (with integrated 10 Base-T Phy)

Standards supported

  • Green PC
  • PCI specification 2.1 compatible with reduced power support
  • Microsoft Power Management, Microsoft On Now™, PC 97™
  • Remote wake-up capabilities
  • Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)

TI has announced sampling of its new ThunderLAN-Power Management™ (PM) chip, the industry's first 100 Mbps Ethernet controller that enables a system solution for remote control of PCs using industry standard network management facilities.

This technology is used to remotely wake up a sleeping PC on the network, thereby improving the energy efficiency of the end users product.

The ThunderLAN-PM chip -- TNETE100PM -- is compatible with Microsoft's OnNow and PC 97 initiatives, the Microsoft/Intel/Toshiba Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification, PCI 2.1 reduced power support and Magic Packet™ remote wake-up detection.

The ThunderLAN™ family of chips are the only Media Access Control (MAC) devices in the industry that allow users to support all of the following protocols with a single device and a single software driver, thus future-proofing high-speed Ethernet:

  • 10Base-T
  • 10Base-2
  • 10Base-5
  • 100Base-TX
  • 100Base-T4
  • 100VG-AnyLAN
  • 100Base-Fx

Samples of the ThunderLAN-PM chip will be available in both PQFP and TQFP packages in September with volume production in 4Q96. The TNETE100PM chip is backward or footprint compatible with the current TNETE100 chip.
