New TI-JVC technology puts Dolby surround sound on PCs

Surround sound from only two speakers? On your computer? Believe it.

Texas Instruments Japan Ltd. and Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) have jointly developed a system that produces realistic, theater-like surround sound through only two speakers placed in front of the listener.

The new system can be used on a variety of equipment including personal computers, game machines, televisions and other audiovisual products. It will be particularly attractive on multimedia PC applications and also will allow television makers to reduce system costs because it requires only two speakers, instead of the conventional five speakers needed to reproduce the same sound.

The system uses a single TI digital signal processor (DSP) combined with the "Dolby Pro Logic 3D-PHONIC" technology. This technology combines Dolby's "Pro Logic" and JVC's three-dimensional sound field "3D-PHONIC."

This is the first system developed that can reproduce surround sound from audio and video sources such as videotape and TV programs, enabling consumers to enjoy theater-quality sound on their PCs and televisions. Previous systems not only required five speakers to produce Dolby Pro Logic surround sound, but also were limited only to video sources on PCs.
