PCMCIA power switches feature optimal performance, lower cost

Two new PC Card power-interface switches featuring accelerated performance and lower cost are now available from TI.

The new switches provide a PCMCIA integrated power-management solution for interfacing to PC Cards used in applications such as desktop and portable computers, PDAs and any other applications using PC Cards.

The devices are backward compatible with the previous generation TPS2201 and TPS2202A PCMCIA power interface switches. Built using TI's LinBiCMOS™process, these devices allow the distribution of 3.3-V, 5-V and/or 12-V card power to PCMCIA cards.

TPS220x features Benefits
Fully integrated Vcc and Vpp design the switching for dual-slot PC Card interface Fewer glue components to design the PCMCIA power interface. Better reliability. Generally a lower cost interface.
Compatible with industry standard controllers from TI, Cirrus, and Intel Provides multiple controller options
3.3-V low-voltage mode Prolongs battery operating time
Meets PC Card standards Helps to insure compatibility
12-V supply can be disabled except during 12-V flash programming Enables the designer to save critical battery power
Short circuit and thermal protection Eliminates the need to use unreliable and expensive fuses in the power interface circuitry
Low r(DS(on)) switches 110 mOHMS @ 3.3V, 140 mOHMS @ 5V Gives the engineer more power at the card and less power loss in the switch

The TPS2205I and TPS2206I are now available through Texas Instruments and its authorized distributors.

TPS2205I 30-pin SSOP $3.61
TPS2206I 30-pin SSOP $3.87
Suggested retail pricing in U.S. dollars in 1K quantity.
