The TLC2932 is a high frequency Phase Lock Loop (PLL). It contains an edge triggered phase/frequency detector (PFD), a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with selectable outputs of 1x or 1/2x, along with control pins to inhibit either the PFD or VCO sections .
A key feature of this part is the high level of flexibility provided to the PLL designer. The PFD and VCO sections have independent inhibit pins to allow use of either individually. Also, the inhibit function can be used to reduce power in battery applications. A counter, if required, can easily be connected externally for frequency modification. PFD output filtering, such as lag, lead-lag, or integrator, is also external to allow the designer complete control over the filter type.
The high speed PFD detects the phase difference between the input reference frequency and the variable frequency input (VCO output). This difference is output from the PFD and fed into an external filter, and then input to the VCO. The PFD includes an internal charge pump for driving the output stage .
The TLC2932 is capable of locking up to 50 Mhz with a 5 V DC supply or 21 Mhz with a 3 V DC Supply. The jitter is 50 ps typical and 200 ps maximum. The VCO is highly integrated and requires only 1 external resistor for operation.
The TLC2932 is capable of operation with either 5 or 3.3 V DC supplies. The high frequency locking and low jitter (50 ps typical) make the TLC2932 suitable for many performance demanding applications such as:
The TLC2932IPWLE has an operating temperature range of -20°C to 75°C and is available in 14 pin thin-shrink-small-outline (TSSOP) package at a suggested resale price of $2.28 per device in quantities of 1,000.
