Low cost IrDA controller

Product Features

The TIR1000 is an Infrared Data Association (IrDA) compatible infrared (IR) controller. The TIR1000 interfaces directly to a Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) to receive serial data which it then transfers at a maximum rate of 115.2 Kbps to an IrDA compatible transceiver. The transceiver then transmits the data to another IrDA compatible system.

At the 115.2 Kbps data rate, the IrDA protocol defines a serial infrared data "word" to be surrounded by a start bit equal to 0 and a stop bit equal to 1. Individual bits are encoded or decoded the same whether they are start, data, or stop bits.

When coupled with a UART and transceiver, the TIR1000 offers a simple, cost effective "wireless" connection for PC's, notebooks, peripherals and other electronic devices.

The TIR1000 is IrDA compatible, conforms to industry standards and can work with other IrDA compatible devices and systems. The standard ensures physical and protocol compatibility between computer and peripheral vendors.

IrDA offers a low-cost, industry standard solution that is optimized for data transfer. It is compact, low power and virtually transparent to the end user. The 115.2 Kbps data transfer rate works well for file transfer and data exchange applications between mobile devices.

The TIR1000 operates at both 3 and 5 V giving it the ability to function in low power systems such as portable and handheld devices. The TIR1000 also decodes negative and positive transceiver pulses giving it the flexibility to operate with a variety of IrDA compatible transceivers. The TIR1000, connects seamlessly to a UART and transceiver with no extra glue logic needed reducing board space and cost.

Examples of IrDA applications:

Beyond the PC/peripheral market, IR can be found in telephony, consumer, industrial and automotive applications.

The TIR1000 is available in an 8-pin small outline package.
