Cost reduced PC Card™ power interface with low r

Product Features

The TPS2205I and TPS2206I PC Card power-interface switches provide an integrated power-management solution for interfacing to PCMCIA cards. The TPS2205I features a parallel control interface that is compatible with controllers from Cirrus (CL6730), Intel and Texas Instruments (PCI1030 & PCI1130) while the TPS2206I features a serial control interface that is compatible with CardBus™ Controllers. Both devices include all of the discrete power MOSFETs, a logic section, current limiting, thermal protection and power reporting required for PC card control combined in a single integrated circuit. Built using Texas Instruments LinBiCMOS™ process, these devices allow the distribution of 3.3 V, 5 V, and/or 12 V card power to PCMCIA cards. The current limiting and thermal shutdown features eliminate the need for fuses, thus reducing component count, improving reliability and reducing repair costs. Current limit reporting can help the user isolate a system fault to a specific card.

The TPS2205I is backward compatible with the TPS2201 and the TPS2206I is backward compatible with the TPS2202, except that there is no VDD connection at pin 25. Bias current is derived from either the 3.3 V input pin or the 5 V input pin. The APWR_GOOD and BPWR_GOOD pins are also eliminated. These PC Card power switches are optimized for the best cost and rds power performance while fully meeting the proposed 5 V industry standard of 3 W power handling capability (600 mA). Each switch is specified to drive an output current of up to 1 A.

The TPS2205I and TPS2206I feature a 3.3 V low-voltage mode of operation that allows 3.3 V switching without the need for 5 V. This facilitates low-power system designs such as sleep mode and pager mode where only 3.3 V is available. This device is available in a 30-pin SSOP (DB or DF) package.
