Texas Instruments Gears Up with New Entry into MOSFET Driver Market

DALLAS (July 26, 1996) -- Texas Instruments announces the availability of its first series in a full product line of MOSFET drivers. They are a family of low cost, dual channel, high-speed MOSFET drivers for power supply and other high-speed switching applications such as motor drivers, automotive applications and anywhere a MOSFET is used and the operating voltage is less than 40V.

This new series of drivers, designated the TPS281x family, is used in switching power supplies to achieve a small, light weight, and efficient power supply system. The family also incorporates a wide range of logic functions in the drive logic to give engineers more flexibility when designing systems.

The TPS281x devices provide up to 2 Amps of peak current while driving high capacitive loads. They are designed to minimize shoot-through currents and to consume very low supply currents while providing optimum rise and fall times. The drivers operate over a 4 to 14 Volt range. The TPS2811, TPS2812 and TPS2813 also incorporate an internal voltage regulator which extends the operating range up to 40 volts. This minimizes the number of external components required in higher voltage systems.

Key Features/Benefits

20 ns maximum rise/fall time Provides maximum efficiency for high

with 30 ns maximum prop. delay frequency operation.

2A peak output current Devices can drive FETs up to approximately

60W and still maintain good efficiency.

5 uA supply current Allows for better system efficiency/

					performance.

Low cost Devices can replace existing discrete designs

and at a lower cost than current competitive

					products.

On-board linear regulator Allows extended supply voltage operation to

40 Volts for higher voltage systems.

Pricing, Packaging and Availability

The TPS281x family is now available through Texas Instruments and its authorized distributors. They are available in 8-pin Plastic Dual-In-Line Package (PDIP), Small Outline Package (SOP) , and Thin Shrink Small-Outline Package (TSSOP) packages. The suggested retail price is $0.60, in quantities of 1,000.
