Texas Instruments' Newest Operational Amplifiers Feature Improved Performance in Tiny SOT-23 Package

DALLAS (August 5, 1996) -- A new family of low-voltage rail-to-rail op amps in the Small Outline Transistor (SOT)-23 package is now available from Texas Instruments (TI). These amplifiers all have low-noise voltage and low-power consumption, which makes them ideal for applications such as cellular phones, notebook computers, modems, and any low-power, hand-held equipment.

The TLV2211, TLV2221 and TLV2231 are the latest additions to TI's expanding line of SOT-23 analog products. This new TLV22x1 family of rail-to-rail op amps offers designers good performance in a very small package, which lets them place the amplifiers close to the signal source, thus minimizing noise from long Printed Circuit Board (PCB) traces. Furthermore, TI has chosen the industry standard pinout, which is optimized for negative feedback and signal isolation, and makes design with these devices easy in any application.

The TLV2211 is a single micropower op amp with a typical supply current of 11(micro)A, which is prime for battery-powered applications where power consumption is critical. It is the lowest noise SOT-23 micropower op amp available (Vn=22nV/(rt)Hz @ 3V). The TLV2231 is a solution for applications that require better ac performance. It has a slew rate of 1.6V/microsec and bandwidth of 2MHz, while still only requiring 850(micro)A of supply current.

The TLV2231 can drive 600 (ohm) loads and has the lowest noise floor of the three devices at 15nV/(rt)Hz. The TLV2221 offers a solution between the ac performance and output drive of the TLV2231 and the micropower TLV2211. All three op amps can operate down to 2.7V, which makes them choice for low voltage, battery powered applications.

Pricing, Packaging and Availability

The TLV22x1 family of op amps is now available through TI and its authorized distributors. They are available in the SOT-23 package. The suggested retail price is $0.64, in quantities of 1,000. TI Expands SOT-23 Packaging for Linear Devices In TI's quest to bring smaller packages to the market, three other devices are now available in the SOT-23 package: the TLV2361 bipolar op amp and the TLV1391 bipolar comparator, both used in applications such as cellular phones, notebook computers and modems; and the TLV431A, a low voltage shunt regulator designed predominately to be used as the sense comparator in the control loop of low voltage DC-DC converters.
