Texas Instruments and Integrated Circuit Systems Team for PHY Solution

Texas Instruments announced today an agreement with Integrated Circuit Systems, Inc. to offer an integrated physical layer (PHY) interface solution for 100Base-TX. The interface schematic produces a cost-effective, seamless alternative to existing PHY options. Both Media Access Controller (MAC) and PHY capabilities are supported with fully compatible drivers and technical support from both companies.

This cooperative entry into the PHY realm combines the benefits of the TNETE100 ThunderLAN PCI Ethernet Controller, an implementation of TI's ThunderLAN architecture, and of the ICS1890 10/100Base-TX PHYceiver, a member of ICS's PHYceiver family of products.

The TNETE100 from TI features:

• Full MAC functionality supporting 10Base-T, 100Base-T and 100VG-AnyLAN through its industry-standard MII interface
• High level of integration on a chip
• 32-bit PCI glueless host interface
• PCI interface supports DMA operations, minimizing host CPU utilization
• 3.375K of onboard memory
• Cardbus Bus Information Structure (CIS) pointer registration
• Integrated 10Base-T/10Base-5 physical layer interface
• Shipped complete with software drivers, including "Magic Packet "-like remote wake-up features
• Low power consumption due to CMOS process and TQFP package

The ICS1890 from ICS features:

• 10/100 physical layer channel in single-chip integration greatly reduces external components
• Total power consumption under one watt
• Small Board Area
• Integrated 10/100 Switch
• Auto-Negotiation
• Flexible MAC-PHY Interface

The solution interfaces from the MAC layer through the TNETE100's Media Independent Interface (MII) to the ICS1890 and through the ICS1890 directly to a single magnetic module on the PMD sublayer side.

The ThunderLAN family of chips are the only MAC devices in the industry that protect high speed Ethernet investments by using a single device and a single software driver to support the full range of existing Ethernet protocols.
