Texas Instruments Announces New Audio Power Amplifiers

DALLAS (Oct. 21, 1996) -- Two new audio power amplifiers are now available from Texas Instruments (TI). The devices, made with TI's Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology, are designed primarily for bridge mode operation in applications such as notebook computers, cellular phones, and other handheld audio systems.

These devices, designated the TPA4860 and TPA4861, can deliver 1W of continuous average power into an 8omega symbol load with a 5V supply. They have a very low supply current (4.5mA typical), which extends battery life for all portable applications. Sound clarity is enhanced due to only 0.4% voiceband distortion. The power supply rejection in both devices is 55dB @ 1kHz, which increases the fidelity of the amplified signal.

In addition to the amplifier, the TPA4860 also has headphone sense circuitry integrated on board. Both the TPA4860 and TPA 4861 have Bridge Tied Load (BTL) configurations, which eliminate the need for external coupling capacitors on the output in most applications. They also feature a shutdown function for power sensitive applications as well as internal thermal and short circuit protection.

The TPA4860 and TPA4861 are now available through TI and its authorized distributors. The TPA4860 is available in a 16-pin Small-Outline Integrated Circuit (SOIC) and the TPA4861 is available in an 8-pin SOIC. Suggested retail pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $1.25 for the TPA4860 and $1.19 for the TPA4861.
