TI develops the industry's first IEEE1394-1995 CD-ROM Drive prototype to be unveiled at COMDEX FALL '96

Texas Instruments, Inc. (TI), in cooperation with Toshiba Co., Ltd., has developed the industry's first CD-ROM Drive prototype with IEEE1394 interface. This prototype will be displayed at the TI and 1394 Trade Association booths at COMDEX FALL '96, to be held in Las Vegas from November 18.

Currently, SCSI and ATAPI interfaces are most common for CD-ROM Drive. However, this new interface technology is expected to expand IEEE1394 interface application possibilities by simplifying connections to plug-and-play functions and consumer electronics products.

Because the interface for CD-ROM Drive is technologically similar to the DVD-ROM Drive interface, it is expected that the technology developed for the CD-ROM Drive will aid in the development of DVD-ROM Drive interface technology.

To existing CD-ROM System units, Toshiba has added IEEE1394 interfaces with cooperation from TI. TI has developed IEEE1394 PC hardware and software which fully supports Microsoft Windows 95.

In addition to the new CD-ROM System, the 1394 Trade Association booth at COMDEX will display other IEEE 1394 end-equipment products to be merchandised, such as digital cameras, printers, harddisk drives, camcorders, digital VCRs, PC adapter cards, and PC motherboards. TI expects this year's COMDEX to popularize the usage of IEEE1394 throughout the industry.
