Texas Instruments Introduces New High-Performance, Flexible Pre-FET Drivers and Power DMOS Arrays

DALLAS (Nov. 4, 1996) - A new family of pre-FET (field-effect transistor) drivers and power double-diffused metal oxide silicon (DMOS) arrays is now available from Texas Instruments (TI). These devices are designed for use in applications such as automotive engine control systems, anti-lock brake (ABS) systems, and industrial control systems. <P> The family consists of two four-channel low-side pre-FET drivers, the TPIC44L01 and TPIC44L02; two six-channel low-side pre-FET drivers, the TPIC46L01 and TPIC46L02; a four-channel common-source power DMOS array, the TPIC2401; and a six-channel common-source power DMOS array, the TPIC2601. These drivers and power DMOS arrays offer designers an off-the-shelf solution and a cost-effective alternative for power drive applications with the flexibility to tailor the output channels and RDS(on) to match the load requirements.

Usually, a single-chip solution is utilized in automotive applications such as engine control and ABS systems. However, custom chips present high risks and long cycle times, and are rigid in system designs because of the fixed output configuration and RDS(on). TI's new devices separate the power section from the control to allow the designer to use a standard pre-driver to interface to the microcontroller for all power switches. This split-power partitioning allows customization of the output stage for specific load requirements.

Features/Benefits

System flexibilityGives the capability to customize the output stage for specific load requirements
Off-the-shelf solutionReduces the high risks and cycle times of custom chips.
High performanceMeets the demanding needs and requirements of the automotive environment.
Competitive pricingProvides a cost-effective solution to designers.

End Equipment Applications

Applications for the TPIC44L01, TPIC44L02, TPIC46L01, and TPIC46L02 drivers and the TPIC2401 and TPIC2601 power DMOS arrays include:

  • Automotive engine control systems such as fuel injectors
  • Automotive safety systems such as anti-lock brakes
  • Industrial systems such as robotics, manufacturing lines and automated machines
