Texas Instruments Japan and Matsushita Electrical Industrial Co., Ltd. Announce Joint Development of a Single-Chip IEEE-1394 IC for Digital Video Movie Camera

DALLAS (Jan. 27, 1996)--Texas Instruments Japan (TIJ) has jointly developed, with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. a single-chip IC for Digital Video (DV) electronics that complies with the IEEE-1394 standard for high-speed serial buses, the standard interface for the next generation of PCs and consumer electronics. This IC is being embedded in Matsushita's latest digital video movie camera (Panasonic model NV-DE3).

This new IEEE-1394 chip for DV is the semiconductor industry's first such DV application on a single chip. Current DV implementations use two chips (a link chip and a PHY chip). This new design combines link, PHY, and DV packetizer on a single chip, therefore helping video products become even more compact.

The digital video standard for digital VCRs includes optional digital video electronics, a digital interface that allows for dubbing with no loss of image or sound quality; the communications protocol for digital video movie camera terminals complies with IEEE-1394. Standardization of the shapes of the IEEE-1394 interface is being promoted by the HD Digital VCR Council through the International Electrical Commission (IEC).

This standard is the most popular interface for digital video movie camera. The latest electronics based on this new one-chip IEEE-1394 solution is fully compatible with existing DV consumer electronics on the market today. The chip comes in a 144-pin TQFP.
