New Interface Devices From Texas Instruments Simplify Scanner Design

All of the Charge Couple Device Signal Interface Functions in a Single IC

DALLAS (June 23, 1997) -- A new family of A/D charge couple device (CCD) interfaces from Texas Instruments (TI), are designed to digitize and compensate the analog output of CCD image sensors. The devices can operate in either correlated double sample (CDS) or sample-and-hold modes of operation, which makes them ideal for use in applications such as hand-held scanners, flatbed scanners and contact image sensors.

The devices, designated the TLC8044 and TLC8144, feature separate RGB inputs for the CCD imager signal, internal CDS/sample-and-hold circuitry, bipolar analog signal offset correction and a 3-to-1 RGB analog mux. A 10-bit or 12-bit A/D allows the TLC8044 and TLC8144 to handle both color and gray-scale operations with a cost-effective single device. Additional digital correction techniques provide for compensation of pixel response non-uniformity (PRNU), both offset and shading, on a pixel-by-pixel basis using calibration data that is stored externally.

The TLC8044 features a fully differential analog signal path and has a 12-bit, 6 million samples per second (MSPS) A/D converter that allows for up to 36-bit color designs. The TLC8144 features a single-ended-signal analog signal path that includes 3 independent analog programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) and a 10-bit, 6 MSPS A/D converter that allows for up to 30-bits of color resolution.

Features/Benefits
12-bit 6 MSPS A/D operation (TLC8044)
10-bit 6 MSPS A/D operation (TLC8144)
Allows processing of 36-bit color signals at 2 MSPS/color (TLC8044) or 12-bit gray scale operation at 6 MSPS; and 30-bit color signals at 2 MSPS/color (TLC8144) pr 10-bit gray scale operation at 6 MSPS.
Both color and gray scale operation Provides both color and gray scale operations combined in an economical single IC.
Both CDS and sample-and-hold modes Reduces the time required to learn the device and the time to finish a new design because the same IC can be used in multiple IC designs. Gives the designer flexibility in solving design problems.
Pixel-by-pixel offset and gain compensation Allows for truer flat signal response across the whole CCD sensor, since each individual pixel variation can be compensated for.
Default registers for even and odd offset and gain correction for each color (TLC8044) Allows designers to compensate for differences in a default block mode if individual pixel compensation is not required.
Global offset and gain compensation (TLC8044) Provides for global compensation of the signal which allows for more flexibility and performance from a design.
400 mW power dissipation Improves portable performance and uses less power.

End Equipment Applications

Applications for the TLC8044 and TLC8144 include:

  • Hand-held scanners
  • Flatbed scanners
  • Contact image sensors.

Pricing, Packaging and Availability

The TLC8044 and TLC8144 are now available from Texas Instruments and its authorized distributors. The TLC 8044 is in a 64-pin mini plastic quad flat pak (PQFP) and is priced at $11.64 in quantities of 1,000. The TLC8144 is in a 48-pin thin quad flat pak (TQFP) and is priced at $4.87 in quantities of 1,000.
