New High-Speed 2 Amp MOSFET Drivers from Texas Instruments Drive Large Loads in Small SOT-23 Package

DALLAS (June 9, 1997) – A new family of high-speed, 2 Amp MOSFET drivers in the SOT-23 package are now available from Texas Instruments (TI). The 2A drive capability allows the devices to drive very large loads, yet the size allows the power supply design to move to a smaller platform and maintain the same drive currents. These high-speed MOSFET drivers are ideal in applications such as motor drivers, power supply and automotive applications.

These new devices, designated the TPS2816, TPS2817, TPS2818 and the TPS2819 are single-channel MOSFET drivers used in switching power supplies. They provide up to 2 Amps of peak current while driving highly capacitive loads, are designed to minimize shoot-through currents and consume very low supply currents while providing optimum rise and fall times. The TPS2816, TPS2817, TPS2818 and TPS2819 incorporate a linear regulator to extend the 4V to 14V normal operating range up to 40 Volts, which minimizes the number of external components required.

The TPS2816 and TPS2818 are inverting drivers and the TPS2817 and TPS2819 are non-inverting drivers. The TPS2816 and TPS2817 have internal active pull-ups on the input pin for use with pulse width modulators (PWMs) that have open-drain or open-collector outputs.

Features/Benefits

  • SOT-23 package

Allows smaller designs.

  • 20 ns Max. rise and fall time with 30 ns Max. propagation delay

Provides maximum efficiency for high-frequency operation.

  • 2A peak output current

Devices can drive FETs up to approximately 60W while still maintaining good efficiency.

  • 50 uA supply current

Allows for better system efficiency and performance.

  • Low cost

Devices can replace existing discrete designs at a lower cost than current competitive products.

  • On-board linear regulator

Allows extended supply voltage operation to 40 Volts for higher voltage systems.

End Equipment Applications

Applications for the TPS2816, TPS2817, TPS2818 and the TPS2819 include:

  • Off-line switching power supplies
  • DC-to-DC switching converters
  • Motor drivers
  • Automotive applications
  • Relay and solenoid drivers
  • Anywhere a MOSFET is used and the operating voltage is less than 40V

Pricing, Packaging and Availability

The TPS2816, TPS2817, TPS2818 and the TPS2819 are now available from Texas Instruments and its authorized distributors. All devices are available in a SOT-23 package. The TPS2816, TPS2817, TPS2818 and the TPS2819 are priced at $0.64 in quantities of 1,000.
