Texas Instruments' Mixed-Signal/Analog Technology is an Integral Part of DSP Solutions for Modems

Texas Instruments' analog solutions enable high-speed connectivity - a must-have in today's digital world.

  • TI's analog interface circuit (AIC) product family provides a wide-range of solutions for a variety of modem technologies.
  • TI's AICs are designed as an optimum interface with TI's digital signal processors (DSPs), which are the most widely-used, pervasive family of DSPs in the world.
  • As a leader in digital and analog technologies and digital signal processing solutions, TI can capitalize on the move to integrate analog and digital functions into systems-on-a-chip.

U.S. Robotics high-speed x2™ modem technology is based on Texas Instruments' chipset, which includes a programmable DSP, an analog interface and a bus interface ASIC.

  • TI's programmable DSP platform enables x2's software-based architecture - allowing compliance to standards and easy upgrades to x2 purchasers.
  • Packard Bell Platinum PCs now shipping with x2 modem technology.
  • Survey by Boardwatch indicates Internet Service Provider (ISP) support for x2 will be three times the number supporting any other 56 kbps technology.
  • x2 is now the retail defacto standard. x2 now connects to ISPs in more than cities.

With programmable DSP solutions, TI well positioned in the emerging xDSL market.

  • U.S. Robotics and TI recently announced a strategic initiative to deliver a family of affordable and upgradable hybrid modems supporting both dial-up access and rate adaptive Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL).
  • Microsoft views the x2/DSL hybrid modem as a key enabler to using the existing telephony network for on-line connectivity.
  • The programmability of TI's DSP chipset solution and U.S. Robotics software and modem position combine to create standards-compliant, adaptable solutions.
  • This adaptability lowers risk for both telecom solutions providers and end customers.

TI analog solutions support soft modem applications.

  • Soft modems are a potentially viable solution for entry-level PC users and for some embedded applications such as set-top boxes and interactive games.
  • TI's portfolio of advanced analog building blocks, including analog interface circuits and bus interfaces, addresses the needs of soft modem designers.
  • TI's ability to manufacture these devices in either analog or digital processes generates greater flexibility for modem designers.
