Texas Instruments DSP Solutions Enable 15 Years of Innovative Applications
Texas Instruments digital signal processing (DSP) technology enables the breakthrough applications driving the digital future. Since TI introduced its first general-purpose digital signal processor in 1982, more than 30,000 customers worldwide have turned to TI DSP solutions for applications in computer, communications, consumer, industrial, and automotive products. TI DSP technology is everywhere. It has become so pervasive that a high-tech consumer uses DSP as often as every ten minutes; up to 28 times before lunch. TI DSP is used in one of two digital cellular phones, nine of ten high-performance disk drives, and one of three high-speed modems.
A DSP chip is a specialized microprocessor at the heart of a high-performance system that takes analog signals, such as light and sound, and converts them into ones and zeros for intensive number-crunching tasks in real time, or as it's happening. This real-time capability makes DSP ideal for applications where delays can't be tolerated such as cellular phones and computer disk drives.
In electronic power steering systems, a DSP can be programmed to exhibit light steering response at low speeds to give the feel of a luxury car, and tight, sports-car-like response at highway speeds. In washing machines, a DSP-based adaptive system controls motor speeds to reduce noise and increase energy efficiency. TI's most recent DSP chip will bring a long-awaited solution to the Internet bottleneck. Not only will more users be able to log on, but a file that currently takes 10 minutes to download will take less than five seconds.
