TI Honors DSP Solutions Customers on Anniversary of 15-Year Leadership

HOUSTON (Sept. 15, 1997) -- Texas Instruments, celebrating its 15th anniversary of digital signal processing (DSP) solutions leadership, today honored some of its long-term customers who have been instrumental to the success of the TI DSP business. From the introduction of TI's first programmable DSP solution in 1982 to the present, these innovative companies have been closely involved with TI in pioneering new applications for DSP technology.

"TI's long-term DSP customers are truly innovators. They are among the most important contributors to the entire field of digital signal processing," said Mike Hames, Semiconductor Group vice president and worldwide DSP manager. "Their leading-edge products showed the world what DSP technology could do, laying the groundwork for critical role DSP plays in driving the digital world."

TI honors the following DSP solutions customers: 3Com Corporation, Allied Signal, Analogic, Apple Computer Inc., AT&T, Bay Networks, the Boeing Company, Chrysler Corporation, Cisco Systems Inc., Data Translation, Eastman Kodak, FANUC, Ford Motor Company, General DataComm, General Dynamics, General Electric, Hayes Microcomputer Products, Hewlett Packard, Honeywell Inc., Hughes Electronics, IBM, ITT Industries, Litton Industries, Lockheed Martin, Micropolis, Natural MicroSystems, NextLevel Systems, Nortel (Northern Telecom), Racal Data Group, Raytheon, Seagate Technology, and Siemens.

In addition to these customers, TI also acknowledges the role its North American distributors have played in promoting DSP technology. These distributors include Anthem Electronics, Arrow/Schweber, Future Electronics, Hamilton Hallmark, Marshall Industries, and Wyle Electronics. They have been instrumental in making DSP products available to a broad range of customers.

TI's DSP solutions leadership is founded on 15 years of DSP innovations in processing performance, on-chip memory, PC-based tools, starter kits, on-chip peripherals, and low power dissipation, which have enabled TI customers to develop their innovative end products. Companies like these continue to be a major force in driving TI's DSP technology to new levels. TI's broad base of DSP customers continues to grow. Today there are more than 30,000 customers worldwide using TI DSP solutions for their innovative applications and end-equipments, such as wireless communications, modems, disk drives, consumer electronics, and motor control.

"TI is the worldwide market and technology leader in DSP solutions because we are customer-driven," said Hames. "As the list of DSP solutions innovators shows, we are fortunate to have customers who are leading-edge in their own fields. They expect the best from us, and they get it."

A DSP chip is a specialized microprocessor at the heart of a high-performance system that takes analog signals, such as light and sound, and converts them into ones and zeros for intensive number-crunching tasks in real time. This real-time capability makes DSP ideal for applications where delays can't be tolerated such as cellular phones and computer disk drives. A typical DSP solution consists of the digital signal processor, mixed signal products, software and a deep knowledge of overall system functionality to address the needs of high-growth end equipments. TI DSP technology is everywhere. It has become so pervasive that a high-tech consumer uses DSP as often as every ten minutes; up to 28 times before lunch. TI DSP is used in one of two digital cellular phones, nine of ten high-performance disk drives, and one of three high-speed modems.

TI celebrates the 15th anniversary of the introduction of its first DSP solution, a fully integrated programmable DSP. TI is the world's leading DSP solutions provider, with a 44.7 percent market share, according to Forward Concepts, an industry analyst firm. Dataquest, another market/industry analyst firm, put TI as the world's second largest supplier of mixed-signal/analog ICs. In the next 15 years, the company's ongoing commitment to developing advanced DSP solutions will play a vital role in building the digital world of the next century.
