New High-Speed RS-232 Interface Devices from Texas Instruments Ideal for PC Desktop Applications

DALLAS (May 4, 1998) – Two new low-cost, high-speed, single-chip interface devices, which comply fully to EIA/TIA-232-F data transmission standard, are now available from Texas Instruments. The devices are excellent interfaces between desktop PCs and peripherals such as printers, mice, plotters, scanners, external modems and test equipment. These devices compliment TI's extensive line of data transmission products, including RS-422, RS-485, Fibre Channel, low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS), universal serial bus (USB), IEEE 1394 and others.

The devices, designated the SN75LP185 and the SN75LPE185, are low-power, single-chip PC host interface devices designed to operate at data rates up to and greater than 256K bits per second (bps). These devices have electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction circuitry and driver outputs clamp to about 6V, both of which reduce overall system noise. The SN75LPE185 is identical to the SN75LP185, except that it offers the option to place the drivers and receivers in a high-impedance state and wake-up mode.

Features/Benefits

Low-cost RS-232 interface    solution Reduces overall motherboard cost.
High-speed (256K bps) data    signaling rate Increases data transmission speed.
Industry best +/-15kV ESD    performance Provides higher protection from electrostatic discharge.
Low power consumption Draws less current from power supply and reduces heat emission.
Maintains the industry    standard flow-through    architecture of the SN75185    and SN75C185 Allows for easy board-level hook-up to the device.
5V, +/- 12V supplies Gives wide driver supply voltages.

End Equipment Applications

Applications for the SN75LP185 and the SN75LPE185 include:

PC Desktop Applications

  • Printers
  • Mice
  • Plotters
  • Scanners
  • External modems
  • Test equipment

Availability, Packaging and Pricing

The SN75LP185 and the SN75LPE185 are available now through Texas Instrument and its authorized distributors. The SN75LP185 is available in a 20-pin shrink small-outline package (SSOP), a 20-pin thin shrink small-outline package (TSSOP) and a 20-pin small-outline integrated circuit (SOIC). The SN75LPE185 is available in a 24-pin SSOP, a 24-pin TSSOP and a 24-pin SOIC. Suggested pricing for the SN75LP185 is $1.41, and suggested pricing for the SN75LPE185 is $1.50, both in quantities of 1,000.
