Industry’s First EEPROM Programmable Three-Phase DC Brushless Motor Controller Chipset Well-Suited for Office Products

Free Software Program Adds to Ease of Design

DALLAS (April 27, 1998) -- Leveraging its mixed-signal design expertise, Texas Instruments (TI) introduces the first three-phase direct current (DC) brushless motor (BLM) controller chipset to offer EEPROM programmable capability. This is the first phase-locked-loop (PLL) motor control device to implement the PLL digitally utilizing a DSP filter algorithm. This chipset offers designers the flexibility to program pole/zero digital filter coefficients to optimize compensation of the system, and is well-suited in applications such as printers, copiers and scanners.

The new chipset for three-phase DC BLM is made up of a motor controller, designated the TPIC43T01, and a motor driver, designated the TPIC1310. The TPIC43T01 is a monolithic motor control integrated circuit designed to provide precision RPM (revolutions per minute) control to a three-phase DC BLM. The TPIC1310 is a monolithic gate-protected power DMOS array configured as a three-half-H-bridge. When combined, the TPIC43T01 controller and the TPIC1310 Power+ Array™ give the motor system designer the ability to optimize the current switching capability of the output stage through the employed pulse-width modulation techniques.

Additionally, TI provides a PC-based Windows® compatible software package allowing users to input the motor and system characteristics, optimizing the control loop response with continuous-time parameters, and the program selects the required digital filter coefficients. Once the PLL parameters are finalized, the software program outputs the resulting EEPROM settings to a Joint Electron Device Engineering Committee (JEDEC) compatible file to program the TPIC43T01 through a third party device programmer. This software package is available by request, at no charge.

"TI's software support for the TPIC43T01 is just as unique as the device. It provides designers with an easy-to-use, graphic-based tool to help them quickly design their motor systems using our new chipset," said Steven Jones, Systems Engineering Manager. "Using this program will help significantly reduce our customers' time to market."
