Choice, Not Compromise for Your DSP Solution
Data Converters from Texas Instruments Offer Design FlexibilityDigital signal processors (DSPs) are proliferating into every electronic corner. From motor control functions to wireless phones. From high-speed Internet access to automotive controls. From medical diagnostics to professional fishing weight scales. The applications are many and varied. Clearly, no one DSP solution can address every end application. As the world leader in the DSP market, Texas Instruments (TI) provides a DSP to fit almost any conceivable application. With its C2000, C5000 and C6000 platforms, TI offers system designers a choice in selecting a DSP for their application. It's the ability to offer that choice -- rather than forcing a sub-optimal compromise -- that sets TI apart from its DSP competitors. That much is well known. What is less well known is TI's ability to offer the same choice on the analog/mixed-signal side of a DSP solution. If you look inside any DSP solution, you'll find a DSP chip surrounded by mixed-signal and analog technology. It's mixed-signal technology in data converters that takes analog signals such as sound and images, converts them to digital bits and delivers them to the DSP. And it acts in reverse once the DSP has processed those bits. As the world leader in the analog and mixed-signal markets, TI has the mixed-signal design expertise to create innovative data converters for DSP solutions. TI is the number two supplier of data converters worldwide, according to WSTS. Additionally, TI offers more than 25 data converters to the mass market that are compatible with its TMS320 family of DSPs. That includes analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog. It includes serial output and parallel output. And it includes a wide spectrum of speed versus resolution combinations. The full range of TI's TMS320-compatible data converters is shown in Figure 1. With today's product roadmap, the speed range detailed in Figure 1 for both analog-to-digital converters and digital-to-analog converters will soon be more than doubled. Highlights from the current product line are detailed below. Analog-to-Digital Converters Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) are found in more than three out of every four DSP applications. ADCs convert analog signals into digital bits. Within this product family, TI offers resolutions from 4-bit up to 12-bit and sampling speeds from less than 100 thousand samples per second (kSPS) up to 40 megasamples per second (MSPS). All of these are TMS320 compatible. In addition, there are many unique features available, a few of which are highlighted here.

Notes:
Industry's First Programmable Resolution and Speed The resolution and sampling speed of this programmable ADC, designated the TLV1562, can be set to change dynamically during operation. Any of the three following combinations can be programmed: 10 bits resolution at 2 MSPS; 8 bits at 3 MSPS; and 4 bits at 7 MSPS. This programmability can be advantageous in a wide range of applications including portable digital radios, paging systems, process controls, motor control, remote sensing, automotive systems, servo controls and digital cameras. For example, in a monitoring application, the ADC can be programmed to scan a wide area at low resolution and high speeds. Then, if the system notices something amiss, the TLV1562 can be programmed to automatically shift into a higher resolution, slower speed mode to take a closer look at whatever is going on. This programming capability opens the door to new applications that are limited only by the imagination. Industry's Highest Speed in Small 8-Pin Package This high-speed (1.25 MSPS), 10-bit device, designated the TLV1572, has a simple, fast serial interface, a small package, 3V operation and low power consumption. It's ideal for compact or remote high-speed systems such as industrial process control and metering, digital motor controllers, wireless communications and automotive systems. It communicates directly to TI's TMS320 DSPs and (Q) SPI microcontrollers without using any additional glue logic. Digital-to-Analog Converters Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) are found in slightly less than three out of every four DSP applications. DACs convert digital bits into analog signals. Within this product space, TI offers resolutions from 8-bit up to 12-bit and conversion speeds from less than 2 microseconds up to 60 MHz. All of these are TMS320 compatible. Some unique features in the TI DAC product line are highlighted here. Industry's Fastest 12-Bit Voltage Output DACs The TLV5619 is a 12-bit DAC that has an internal amplifier for the fastest voltage outputs in the industry. It has a typical settling time of only 1 micro-second. The device can operate off of a single power supply in the range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V. The TLV5619 has a 12-bit parallel interface to the system's DSP or microprocessor. Programmable Settling Times A dual 12-bit DAC -- the TLC5618A -- and a dual 10-bit DAC -- the 5617A -- both feature programmable settling time versus power dissipation, making them ideal for power sensitive applications. The design engineer is able to optimize system performance versus power consumed as required by the application. Since this is programmable, a design can conserve energy when speed is not required and still have high-speed performance on demand. Both devices contain two DACs in a small outline package. Quadruple 8-Bit DACs Four 8-bit DACs with output buffer amplifiers and interface logic are contained on a single monolithic chip in the TI devices designated TLC7225 and TLC7226. Both devices were fabricated in LinBiCMOS -- a TI process technology that allow high-speed digital logic circuits and precision analog circuits to be integrated on the same chip. Combining four DACs, four operational amplifiers and interface logic into a small, 0.3-inch wide, 24-terminal package allows significant reduction in board space and offers increased reliability in systems using multiple converters. Applications include process control, automatic test equipment and automatic calibration of large system parameters. Making the Design Process Easier In addition to creating design flexibility through an innovative product line, TI is also supporting that product line with a full range of application notes and evaluation modules. More than 25 application notes that address data conversion are available today on TI's web site. The topics include analog front ends, analog to digital, data converters, line-card codecs, stereo audio sigma-delta ADC and voice-band audio processors. In addition, there are several evaluation modules available that interface to TI DSP Starter Kits.
More information on TI's line of data converter products is available online at Data Converters for DSP Solutions As the world leader in both the DSP and the analog/mixed-signal markets, TI is committed to bringing designers the DSPs and data converters they need to implement their system designs. This doesn't mean having the broadest portfolio of data converters for the mass market. This means having the right choices available -- choices that include programmability, interfacing, speed, small packaging and advanced process technology. It's that choice that keeps designers from compromising on their optimized DSP solutions.
