New Single-Chip Devices Extend Texas Instruments' Lead in Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit LAN Switching
Next-Generation ThunderSWITCH I and ThunderSWITCH II Solutions Deliver High Performance and Lowest Price-Per-Port to the DesktopDALLAS (June 22, 1998) -- Building on its leadership position in desktop Ethernet switching, Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE:TXN) has extended the ThunderSWITCH portfolio of silicon solutions with the introduction of two new single-chip product families targeting Ethernet and Fast Ethernet and Gigabit switching equipment. These next generation products will enable network equipment manufacturers to develop high-performance desktop switches below $15/port for Ethernet and $35/port for Fast Ethernet. "The market for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switches is flourishing, as businesses demand faster and less expensive networks for Internet-based computing. TI is uniquely positioned to enable networking OEMs to take advantage of this demand," said Mike Caruso, marketing manager at TI. "From large enterprises to small businesses, users of desktop switches based on these new TI solutions will enjoy networks that are more reliable, flexible and affordable." ThunderSWITCH II TNETX4090 - Integration, High Performance for the Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Space
The ThunderSWITCH II TNETX4090 has 4Gb of memory bandwidth and 6Gb of internal switching bandwidth, enabling OEMs to develop ultra-high performance non-blocking switches. By also incorporating a rich feature set, the cost effective TNETX4090 meets the needs of the rapidly growing 10/100/1000-Mb market. The TNETX4090 is cascadable to allow OEM's to easily create Fast Ethernet switches of varying port densities. ThunderSWITCH I - Best Depth and Breadth in the 10Mb Space
The ThunderSWITCH I family of four pin-for-pin compatible devices all support the same feature set. As a result, networking OEMs can build -- on one common platform -- switches of various port densities that share the same functionality. This enables OEMs to simplify designs, lower overall system cost and get to market quickly with solutions that provide all the features needed to support emerging bandwidth intensive applications. The ThunderSWITCH I family members include:
- TNETX3270, which supports 24 10-Mb ports and three 10/100-Mb ports Pricing and Availability ThunderSWITCH II TNETX4090 samples are scheduled to be available from TI and its authorized distributors next month. Volume production is scheduled for third quarter. TI plans to price the chip at $90 per unit in quantities of 10,000. The TNETX4090 will be delivered in a 352 ball grid array (BGA) package. Samples of all devices in the ThunderSWITCH I family are available now, with volume production scheduled for third quarter. In quantities of 10,000 units, prices are planned to be:
- TNETX3110 (8 ports), $55 each The corresponding physical layer devices: the TNETE2008, which supports 8 10-Mb ports, the TNETE2101, a single channel 10/100 PHY, and the TNETE2201 single channel gigabit transceiver are in production now. In quantities of 10,000 units, prices are:
- TNETE2008, $10 each The TNETE2008 is available in a 120 pin quad flat package (QFP). The TNETE2201 is available in a 64-pin thin QFP. The TNETE2101 is available in a 100-pin TQFP. TI also offers a complete manufacturable reference design based on the ThunderSWITCH II devices, detailed application notes and applications design team assistance to help networking OEMs achieve faster time to market.
