New High-Side FET Pre-Driver and 8-bit Shift Register Devices from Texas Instruments Increase System Reliability![]() DALLAS (Sept. 21, 1998) -- Designers of products that demand high reliability, such as automotive and industrial control systems, can improve the dependability of their equipment using new power devices introduced today by Texas Instruments (TI). The new products, members of TI's Power+ family of drivers and controllers, include the industry's first four-channel high-side FET (field effect transistor) pre-driver with dynamic fault threshold generation and a low-cost l00 milliamp (mA) 8-bit shift register. Power+ Control TPIC44H01 Minimizes Downtime, Controls Four Power FETs TI's new Power+ Control device, the TPIC44H01, is the world's first intelligent high-side pre-driver to provide both serial or parallel input interfaces for four external NMOS (N-Channel Metal Oxide Semiconductor) power FETs. The TPIC44H01 is ideal for applications where more than one function depends on power flowing through a single fuse, such as automobile solenoids, relays and lamps. The TPIC44H01 uses dynamic fault thresholds to improve reliability. The device handles multiple loads with each of its four channels having individual fault condition detection. Therefore, the device can prevent one malfunctioning indicator bulb from blowing a fuse and disabling multiple loads running through that same fuse. In addition, the TPIC44H01's fully integrated fault diagnostics actually report which load has the fault and the type of fault. This minimizes both the time and cost of system repairs. Consequently, the TPIC44H01 can improve overall end-product reliability and customer satisfaction. T he TPIC44H01 reports faults through its serial interface, while an over-voltage lockout circuit protects the device and the external FETs. Since the TPIC44H01 has the unique ability to develop a dynamic over-current threshold, it can drive incandescent bulbs with long inrush currents, for example, without erroneously flagging faults. Users may also select an internally set over-current threshold of ~1.25V by pulling the respective fault reference voltage pin to the logic supply voltage. Power+ Logic TPIC6C595 is Low-Cost Shift Register for Low-Current LEDs TI's new Power+ Logic device, the TPIC6C595, is a highly reliable, low-cost solution that is ideal for low-current LED applications. It is the world's first 100mA 8-bit shift register for LED applications. The TPIC6C595 uses significantly less power than traditional devices. It integrates the control logic of a 74HC595, an industry-standard high-speed CMOS (Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) logic device, with eight current-limited 100mA DMOS (Double-diffused Metal Oxide Semiconductor) outputs in a single 16-pin surface-mounted package, delivering both space savings and high reliability at reduced cost. The TPIC6C595 provides unclamped avalanche energy capability of 30 millijoule (mJ) and electro-static discharge protection of 2500V. A built-in voltage clamp provides inductive transient protection. Power driver applications for TPIC6C595 include relays, solenoids, and other low-current or medium-voltage loads. Its principal end-user applications are for LED moving signs, process control systems, automated test equipment, instrumentation, and electronic games. About TI's Power+ Product Families TI's Power+ Control devices enable customers to use multiple FET types for various types of loads while controlling them from a single device. Power+ Control devices feature integrated power or power control ICs with fault protection and diagnostics. Power+ Control devices give users greater flexibility for executing high-current applications at a cost-competitive price. Power+ Logic devices feature high-speed CMOS control logic integrated with eight power DMOS FETs. Integrating addressable latch, D-type latch, and shift register logic, these devices drive loads directly with DMOS output drivers. Users can cascade multiple Power+ devices, which allows control of multiple outputs/loads using the serial interface. Because cascading leverages Power+ capabilities over several devices, the Power+ family represents significant cost-savings to users.
