Texas Instruments Drives ADSL into the Home
Optimized Chipset Offers Connectable, Standards-Compliant Solutions for Personal Computer and Modem ManufacturersDALLAS (Sept. 21, 1998) -- Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE:TXN) announced today it is accelerating the implementation of ADSL high-speed remote access technology with the release of a complete personal component interconnect (PCI) client side solution. This optimized chipset will deliver a higher performing and programmable PCI solution with industry-leading central office equipment connectability. The chipset gives personal computer and modem manufacturers all of the software and hardware necessary to develop both T1.413 Issue 2 and/or UAWG-compliant universal ADSL splitterless remote access solutions. This flexibility will be extended into other derivations such as hybrid voiceband/broadband modems in future chipset versions. ADSL technology allows traditional voice and digital data to coexist on ordinary copper telephone wire, delivering high-bandwidth, multimedia-rich applications like home networking, streaming video, video conferencing, interactive tele-gaming and ultra-fast Internet access. With speeds ranging from 800 kilobits per second (Kbps) to 8 megabits per second (Mbps), ADSL represents a 100-fold increase over today's fastest 56 Kbps analog modems. Designated the TNETD2000P, the chipset is based on TI's 1600 millions of instructions per second (MIPS) 'C6000 core DSP technology, the highest performing and most flexible DSP technology on the market. With five to ten times the available MIPS as competing solutions, the TNETD2000P offers manufacturers additional processing power for value-added, differentiated features. Backed by industry leading DMT-based software from Amati Communications and four generations of successful field-proven DSL trials, the client side solution delivers a fully programmable, future-proofed architecture. For personal computer and modem manufacturers, programmability translates into quick time to market, upgradability to evolving standards such as G.lite and enhanced interoperability with other central office solutions. "ADSL is the key to opening the home networking door," said Todd Andreini, TI's marketing manager for remote access ADSL solutions. "Consumers want freedom of choice in accessing the Internet. As a result, this new generation of remote access products must be cost-effective, user-friendly and reliable. Our leadership in DSP, analog and mixed signal components, and DMT-based software will enable TI to meet the needs of the consumer in their search for high-speed Internet connectivity." Combined, the chipset provides the industry's most robust remote access client modem available on the market today. Optimized for reach, throughput and splitterless operation, the chipset solution provides optimal performance leveraging the power of the DSP transceiver and the partner analog components. It features a high degree of flexibility, enabling it to operate at multiple bit rates and support multiple standards based on the software revisions. As a result, manufacturers can get to market quickly with PCI solutions capable of addressing various market requirements and providing investment protection via software upgradability. TI's client premise solution also provides manufacturers with a robust, connectable modem that leverages standards-compliant interoperability at the central office. TI and Alcatel have worked together on interoperability, and recently announced the successful achievement of this milestone at both the client and central office side. Ensuring connectability will help speed the mass deployment of ADSL technology. Pricing and Availability TI's optimized PCI solution provides all of the components necessary to take a client-side modem from concept to production, including the chipset, software, ATM, robust Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0 driver and installation wizards, as well as a reference design. All chipset components are owned and fully supported by TI. The chipset solution is scheduled to be available in October of 1998. The planned resale pricing for the TNETD2000P will be $75 in volume quantities of 10,000.
