New TI Analog-to-Digital Converter Brings High Performance, Low Power Consumption to Multichannel ApplicationsDALLAS (Oct. 26, 1998) -- The industry's fastest 10-bit, serial analog-to-digital converter (ADC) has been added to Texas Instruments (TI) growing line of easy-to-use digital signal processor (DSP)-compatible data converters, the company announced today. The new ADC provides a fast serial interface, low power dissipation and a glueless interface to TI's world leading TMS320 DSPs and a variety of industry-standard microcontrollers for a range of high-speed serial interface applications.
"Wherever a TMS320 DSP is used, TI's mission is to provide designers with the best choices in data conversion," said Tom Lahutsky, New Product Development Manager for TI's Data Converter Products. "With its extremely fast conversion, ultra-low power consumption and glueless serial interface, the TLV1570 is the leading choice in performance for multi-input TMS320 and (Q)SPI based system design." Ease of Design, High Speed, Low Power Consumption Operating from a single voltage supply with a range of 2.7 to 5.5 V, the TLV1570 provides design flexibility in a wide variety of plug-in and battery-powered systems. Integrated reference voltages of 3.8 V at the 5 V level and 2.3 V at the 3 V level save space by eliminating the need for these functions to be supplied externally. The TLV1570 accepts a wide range of analog inputs, from 0 V up to the analog supply voltage of 3 or 5 V with external reference. An on-chip control register provides four scan modes for channel selection among the chip's eight inputs. The 8-channel MUX is independently accessible, which allows the user to insert an anti-aliasing filter or amplifier between the MUX and the ADC. Battery-powered applications benefit from the TLV1570's extremely low power consumption -- typically 8 milliWatts (mW) with a 2.7 V power supply or 40 mW with a 5.5 V supply. An auto-powerdown or sleep mode brings typical current consumption to as low as 175 microAmps (µA) when the device is not in operation, and a software powerdown mode allows the designer to reduce maximum current consumption to a mere 10 µA at 2.7 V. The TLV1570 is ideal for use with the company's TMS320 DSP and many common industry microcontrollers. The TLV1570 uses a simple four or five-wire serial port to interface gluelessly to TMS320 DSPs as well as to (Q)SPI compatible microprocessors . As a result, the device is flexible, cost-efficient and easy to use in a variety of designs that require either a 3 V or 5V ADC. Availability, Packaging and Pricing The TLV1570 is available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The device comes in two package options; the 20-pin small-outline (SOIC) and space saving TSSOP packages. Suggested resale pricing is from $3.70 each in quantities of 1,000.
