Ultra-Low Power Microcontrollers From Texas Instruments Offer Unmatched Performance and Price
The new family, designated the MSP430x11x, is the newest member of TI’s MSP430 mixed-signal controller product line. "The MSP430x11x family is changing the landscape of the low power microcontroller market," said Bill Chew, TI’s MSP430 Marketing Manager. "Our devices will satisfy previously unmet power requirements for portable instrumentation equipment such as multimeters, data loggers, metering, sensor systems, alarm systems, or just about any application where battery conservation is important." Devices in the family operate at speeds of up to 5MHz, with most of the instructions being executed within a single 200-ns (nanosecond) cycle. The 27-core instruction, 16-bit RISC architecture allows each instruction to be used with each addressing mode, making the MSP430x11x easily programmable and code compatible with TI’s other MSP430 families. Additionally, a high level of circuit integration and a chip cost as low as $1 for high-volume ROM versions enable significant system cost savings. Among the peripherals integrated into the new device are a 16-bit timer with three capture/compare registers, fourteen individual input/output signals, 16-bit watchdog timer and JTAG interface. Customers can choose 2kB or 4kB of memory with the ROM versions of the device, and 4kB with the low-power one-time programmable (OTP) version. The first three members of the MSP430x11x family are the MSP430P112IDW (OTP version), the MSP430C111IDW (2k ROM version) and the MSP430C112IDW (4k ROM version). Pricing and Availability The MSP430P112IDW is available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The ROM versions of the MSP430C11x are planned for release in March of 1999. Suggested resale pricing of the MSP430P112IDW is $2.45 in quantities of 10,000. The MSP430C111IDW is planned to be priced at $1.30 in quantities of 100,000 while the MSP430C112IDW is planned to be priced at $1.50 in quantities of 100,000.
