New ADSL Receiver from TI is First with Programmable GainDALLAS (Nov. 16, 1998) — A new 70-megahertz (MHz) amplifier for ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) receiver applications announced today by Texas Instruments (TI) is the industry’s first with programmable gain. Programmable gain makes it possible for the receiver to adjust operation to compensate for the length of the telephone line and other line conditions. The receiver is ideal for either central office or remote terminal ADSL applications.
![]() The device, designated the THS7002, has two stages of operation, which include a low noise voltage-feedback preamp and a programmable gain amplifier. The preamp features a low voltage noise of 2nV/rtHz for maximum signal-to-noise ratio of the incoming signal. Additionally, the output pin of the preamp is accessible to allow the easy addition of external filters if the design requires them. The programmable gain amplifier (PGA) is digitally controlled and provides gain/attenuation control from 20dB to -22dB in 6dB steps. This step size and range is ideally suited to address the impedance variations in telephone wiring caused by varying line lengths and other conditions encountered in ADSL systems for high speed internet access. Other features include output clamp protection to prevent the output of the PGA from going beyond the input range of other lower voltage system components. The THS7002 also provides independent shutdown control for power conservation and multiplexing. Furthermore, the device operates over a wide ±4.5V to ±16V supply voltage range. A Comprehensive Line of ADSL Solutions As an industry leader in both digital and analog technology, TI is dedicated to providing solutions that will meet the needs of ADSL manufacturers, service providers and end users. These include a comprehensive line of integrated circuit products for both client and central office (CO) equipment. While the THS7002 is being offered as a catalog device, it and the recently announced THS6012 and THS6022 xDSL line drivers are also parts of TI's latest ADSL chipset. On the CO side, the THS7002 can be used with TI's TLV320AD12 xDSL codec. Pricing and Availability The THS7002 joins TI's growing family of xDSL line drivers and receivers (see table below). The THS7002 is planned to be available from TI and its authorized distributors in the first quarter of 1999. Pricing is planned to be $5.79 in quantities of 1,000. |
