One of the advantages of the line source is that the sound pressure level drops by only 3 dB each time the distance from the source is doubled. In contrast, the sound level from a point source drops by 6 dB each time the distance is doubled. Due to the low drop-off in sound pressure for the line source, the sound pressure from the loudspeaker can be kept low while still maintaining satisfactory sound pressure levels at comparatively large distances.
