Firearms Used in Taxi Violence

Firearms outnumbered other weapons used in taxi violence by 17 to 1 (2 546 to 148) between January 1994 and June 1999. The table below provides figures for the weapons used in taxi violence from 1994 to 30 June 1999:

Of the firearms that could be identified, handguns comprised 67.3% of the firearms used and rifles and shotguns the remaining 32.7%.

Negligent Use of Firearms

In 1998, 25 337 cases of Pointing of a Firearm were recorded. This crime is on the increase, having risen from 22 742 incidents in 1996. Reported cases of Negligent Handling of a Firearm increased by 16.9% between 1996 and 1998 and cases of Firing a Firearm in a Municipal Area increased by 11% during the same period.
