- In 80.6% of the cases nothing else
but the firearms were stolen. Other valuables
were stolen together with the firearm/s in only
17.5% of the cases. In 1.9% of the cases this
information was unknown.
- 75.5% of the complainants were
between the ages of 19 and 49 (amongst which
30.7% were between the ages of 19 and 29, and
24.9% between the ages of 30 and 39 years).
- The majority of complainants were
White (59.9%) followed by Black complainants
(30.3%), Coloured (6.7%) and Asians (2.4%).
- The majority of complainants were
male (84.1%). There were 15.5% female
complainants in the study.
- Of all the firearms stolen, 79.8%
were stolen from private firearm holders (459
firearms). This was followed by thefts from
permit holders (9.7%, involving 56 firearms) and
thefts from state departments (9.4%, involving 54
firearms).
- Of the firearms stolen from state
departments, 49 firearms (8.5% of all the
firearms covered by the study) had been stolen
from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and
2 firearms each (0.3% of the total) had been
stolen from the South African National Defence
Force (SANDF) and Traffic Department. The
